I had stopped using it, but I found the Bias checks useful, but then I looked more into https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/ and how the classify certain sites (like Times of Israel somewhat is left-center-leaning lol) and gave up on it. This blocklist of instances is ridiculous.

Yeah I checked with private window and it works but weirdly. Seems just bugged and we can't make reports to a clearly hostile dev so...

Some of those tankie instances have been pretty aggressive with others, so I can understand that a developer wants to make its project more accessible to normal people by blocking them. Now, do all the instances on this list deserve it? I don't know. Also, it would probably be a better compromise to have this as a visible "safe default" and let admins edit it easily.

Not the criteria being used here, obviously.

Also, we have a statement of intent. There is a statement of intent here in a pr. You cannot assume good faith of shit libs. You cannot assume good faith of people who say they're doing things for bad reasons.

I mean you can but its disingenuous and shitty and I'm blocking your instance because its so violently stupid.

There is nothing wrong about adding default filters to the software(whenever they are acceptable by others or not). The problem is that this should be done via a separate data file from which code extracts strings and not be hardcoded, as it is against the programming etiquette. Also, this file with filter data shouldn't be hidden or obscured, so that others can modify it as they want.

Oh whoops 😅. I guess we were banned before this commit?

Yeah, we were banned in the initial wave of "unsupported instances" in March here.

Seems like db0 was upgraded from being allowed with a content warning to fully blocked in April with the commit linked in the op.

There’s a commit which also explains their specious reasoning about our instance specifically, as it seems we’ve been on their shit list for a bit longer than that.

As of that commit (April 29) the instance blacklist didn't even include lemmy.ml !

confused travolta meme, no text, transparent background

... but i see a month later they added us in this commit, while removing a large list of specific users and communities which they were also previously hiding content from.

There is a good reason to have crowdsourced filters for spammers and chuds, but this shit ain't the way.

Etiquette aside, this is just functionally bad. It took db0 months to notice because the frontend didn't get updated until an instance upgrade. Seems like that would be pretty common and vary widely between instances, making updating the list a slow, unreliable process. Even if they wanted to censor sites themselves, it would've made more sense to have the list itself remotely hosted so it could be updated without waiting for full instance upgrades some months later.

Our 'liberals' aren't liberal.

That comment you highlighted just reads like a jordanlund modlog defending genocide by way of banning someone who says 'genociders should die instead, actually'.

They can't help themselves from being elitists.

Its like they're hardwired, they're so incredibly insecure that they front this moral superiority god complex, and anything that challenges the actual logic of that morality is fundamentally evil... because they can't be wrong.

These people are confused... they're reactionary conservatives, they're wannabe politicos/consultants... literal thought police, frame keepers of the overton window.

I don't know if this dev is fascist I have not studied the question. Do you have some other information besides this list?
Indeed, I'm not calling the dev a tankie, but rather some of the instances of the blacklist that I know of, as a possible explanation for being blacklisted. I don't know all of them well enough to tell.

You don't understand! Freedom of speech is only good when it's freedom of their speech!

But seriously, this recent shift of project leads deciding what users should and shouldn't see is concerning. And honestly, I could give them the benefit of the doubt if they added it as some sort of opt-in list. But no.

They will force their narrative down the users' throats.

I might not always agree with db0, the Anarchist Flotilla, or the "Tankie Triad". But whatever shakes Lemmy right now, consider me an ally. Whatever these egocentric folks attempt to create, it is everything Lemmy was created to replace.

Also, that's a lovely list they made of places to follow.

Doesn't the software package for running a lemmy instance have a default defederation blacklist that includes some of these same instances? It sounds like they're talking about exactly that - an editable blacklist instead of hiding it as some kind of software error when you go somewhere the admin doesn't want you to. To which I say, Lemmy already has that, it's called defederation or muting an ...

There's a technical, often legal, aspect to blacklists. Unmanaged and unmoderated instances can be hijacked and be an actual threat with bots and so on.

But there's another aspect, like someone's favorite shitposter got banned for gatekeeping neopronouns, and now the entire Blahaj instance is blacklisted.

The categories are just entirely different orders of magnitude.

Nobody manually arranges things in alphabetical order. It's much more likely an LLM was used, I would have thought.
