Bruh, calling yourself a creator for reposting shit other people also found and reposted to a different site is the equivalent of calling yourself an artist while using genAI. 🙄

How about reposting everything over and over? im not. I check for links and attempt to not repost existing links. I have 4400 posts and only small minority are accidental reposts. Thats why im urging moderators to pay attention - if one posts 20 posts and 10 of them are reposts - thats a problem. if someone posts 4k posts and 3 of them are reposts - thats just statistics. Major difference in intent.

I'm talking about social media and the Internet as a whole.

Nothing you've posted is original. It's all reddit posts that you've...get ready for it.....reposted.

what is your solution for attracting users? "attracting new users" is not a sentiment that is shared by all of us, not at any cost anyhow. The cost being the fediverse becoming a sad impersonal place (like reddit) before it even lifts off. Your "solution" might attract a few people - those who think bigger numbers are better, always.

many people want to switch from reddit, but cant - no content.
also noeone everyone shares your definition of lemmy. to me - I would love it to be decentralized reddit.
im fine with reddit content as long as I dont have to use reddit.

Let people post content and the votes decide whats interesting and what not i'd say. Spam imo would be the same post over again.

I've had multiple accounts banned over one or two posts that somebody didn't like. Months of posting, comments, engagement and contributions can effectively disappear from a community because of a couple of moderation decisions.

And the more you contribute, the worse the odds become. If you make hundreds or thousands of posts, eventually you're going to post something that one moderator somewhere doesn't like.

You don't need one moderation team to tolerate you. You need multiple independent moderators and admins, across multiple servers, to remain aligned indefinitely.

This is why free speech (or at least free speech adjacent) instances are important. They don't ban people nearly as frivolously. Build your communities on instances that are not hosted by bullies.

Although, I will say, your premise is a bit flawed here. Having more moderation isn't the problem, the problem is the type of moderators that are here on Lemmy. A lot of them are the same hall monitor types that were on Reddit, but even more strict!

Hi it's me, the person you're talking about. Let's get one thing out of the way first: you've admitted that your posts are automated, as if it wasn't obvious. You're a bot. You're not tagged as one, but sanitation@lemmy.today is a bot that a human sometimes uses. Now as for the content you bot, I don't have an issue with a lot of it. Go ahead and post your links and memes. Meme culture is built...

Fully agree, in a general way - OP is not the only case. Incl. the "I am a creator helping the fediverse grow" attitude.

As you said in your next comment:

Why is MORE content better for you than GOOD content?

You're proving my point. The overwhelming majority of content on social platforms is sharing, linking, commenting on, or remixing content created somewhere else. That's how aggregation sites work.

Reddit didn't become Reddit because millions of users were producing original investigative journalism, memes, videos, and research. People found interesting shit and submitted it so everyone else had something to discuss.

Call it "posting," "submitting," or "curating" instead of "creating" if the word creator bothers you. The point doesn't change: someone still has to find and post the content.

If nobody does that, your feed is empty.

You didn't hear the good news:

Now as for the content you bot, I don’t have an issue with a lot of it. Go ahead and post your links and memes. Meme culture is built on theft, anyway. I don’t dislike you any more than any other mass poster who is rarely present in the comments of their posts

Just count your losses and move on.

I've had posts of mine removed. It happens. Logic dictates that it happens more the more you post.

Upvotes are not a measure of value. That thought process is how you get reddit and Facebook. Again, you aren't creating. You're slopping reddit's garbage over to Lemmy and suffocating its communities. Edit: if you want to consider upvotes as a measure of value, look at the votes here. Everyone is disagreeing with you.

is not compatible with the current demand here there is a demand. that demand just goes back to reddit. "I am thirsty" and you respond by pointing a firehose directly at their faces thats what reddit agents want you to belive. just limit posting bro, we dont need so much content bro. And then people just go back to reddit.

If the demand was to get content reposts, then everyone would have been satisfied just by following lemmit.online or alien.top. Instead, the large majority of people rejected them.

But it's not a blind feed sync. That's the important distinction.

There are filters for upvote thresholds, post age, community-specific rules, content requirements, and AI-assisted moderation before anything gets posted.

The end result is essentially the same content I would have selected and posted manually. I've just automated the repetitive work of finding, filtering, checking, and submitting it.

Automation changes the amount of manual effort required, not the intent or selection criteria. in fact lemmy.world specifically has a rule allowing automation.

You can disagree with my thresholds or posting volume, but calling it "syncing two newsfeeds" makes it sound like I'm blindly mirroring Reddit. I'm automating the curation I would otherwise be doing by hand.

But how do you know the large majority of users rejected it? You're measuring the people who complained, not the thousands of lurkers who never say anything.

The fact that I'm here specifically because I wanted more content is itself evidence that there is demand. I'm obviously not the only person who opens Lemmy, sees a mostly empty community, and wishes there were more things to read and discuss.

And this is exactly why I question who is driving the opposition. Is it actually representative of Lemmy's users? A small but vocal group of existing users? Or potentially people with an interest in keeping Reddit's competitors small?

I'm not claiming I can prove Reddit agents are involved. But when a platform desperately needs content, and the loudest voices consistently attack the people bringing content onto it, I think it's reasonable to at least ask who benefits.

You're arguing against something I didn't say. I didn't say people only join platforms that already have a fuckton of users. I said people leave or don't stick around when there's not enough content they're interested in.

Those are completely different things.

You can have a smaller community and still have an active, interesting feed. But if someone opens Lemmy, searches for their interests, finds communities with a handful of posts from weeks ago, and goes back to Reddit where those same interests have fresh discussions every day - that's a content problem, not a "must have millions of users" problem.

And yes, I understand federation. Saying "the Fediverse isn't just Lemmy" doesn't change the argument. Federation doesn't magically create posts in an inactive Lemmy community.

People need something to read before most of them will have something to comment on. That's the entire point.

That's a fair concern. I agree that a wall of obvious bot spam can make a community look more dead.

The problem is the 99% problem: roughly 99% of users aren't creating posts at all, much less original content specifically for Lemmy.

Even Reddit runs heavily on people finding interesting stuff elsewhere and sharing it. That's what I'm automating - curation, not a blind feed. Popularity thresholds, age limits, community rules and content filtering are all applied.

Original content is obviously better. But you need an active community before you can realistically expect enough people to create it.

Any post formatted like that comes straight out of an LLM. No user, no matter how dedicated or how mad, would take the time to format headers and bullet points. Reposting stuff from reddit and posting whatever the LLM spat out. As far as I'm concerned, you are a contributing factor to a stagnant user base here.

Yeah, look at the difference between the main post and the edit. Oops, OP suddenly forgot how to use dashes.

edit: I am reposting from reddit - there is no rules against that. its actually great thing for majority of lemmy users!

As a member of the admin channels, this seems to be the most loathed part about your account. Reddit is a hatred echo chamber for the fediverse, second only to AI. While you view it as a positive element, nearly everyone else here left reddit and take offense to it's posts following them. They view your participation to be bot-like behavior and that's why you're seeing so much pushback to your accounts in particular. I can promise you that a normal user that isn't aggregating reddit content for the fediverse is not sharing your moderation and banning experience.

For a normal user, the gauntlet is much different. At least on the .zip domains, our policy is to not interfere with reports that don't have a user or community that belongs to our instance unless it's something requiring fast action like csam or doxxing, etc. We leave the rest to the mods and admins that the community belongs to.

Your account doesn't offend me and I appreciate your participation but I will say that I've blocked you on my browsing account since I browse New/All and I don't enjoy seeing what amounts to an overwhelming feed of reddit posts.

TL;DR: You're using the fediverse in way that the majority of the platform feels it wasn't designed for so you're going to continue seeing the same retaliatory behaviors for as long as you continue to participate in that manner.

I appreciate the explanation, and honestly this "we dont want to be reddit" idea was brought up several times.

But I think there's a fundamental disagreement here: not everyone shares your idea of what Lemmy should be. The existing 35k-ish MAU shouldn't get to permanently define what Lemmy is allowed to become.

If the current philosophy were working, we'd see it in the results. Instead, Lemmy's active user base has largely stagnated, and enormous numbers of communities are empty or get a couple of posts a week. Whatever we're doing now isn't producing meaningful growth.

And "we left Reddit" doesn't necessarily mean "we never want to see anything that appeared on Reddit." I left Reddit too. I wanted an alternative platform, not an alternative universe where interesting links, memes, news and discussions become contaminated because somebody also posted them on Reddit.

If my volume overwhelms New/All, that's completely fair criticism. That's something we can solve with posting limits, better filtering, community subscriptions, blocks, or better tooling.

But "the existing users don't like this, therefore this isn't what the Fediverse is for" becomes circular. The people who don't like the existing culture may simply leave, so naturally the remaining population increasingly reflects that culture.

I'm trying a different approach because I want Lemmy to actually grow beyond its current niche. If most communities are empty and the active-user count isn't meaningfully growing, I don't think we should treat the status quo as proof that we've already figured out what users want.

But it doesn't have to be either/or. We can have both.

I didn't leave Reddit because every piece of content there suddenly became worthless. I left because of the platform around that content - moderation, censorship, bans, corporate control, and decisions about what you're allowed to see or say.

The same interesting link, meme, news story, or discussion can exist on Lemmy without Reddit's moderation and platform rules attached to it. That's actually part of the value of Lemmy.

And obviously Lemmy should develop its own original content and communities too. Reposting doesn't prevent that. It gives otherwise-empty communities something to discuss while that organic ecosystem develops.

Take the good content, leave Reddit's platform behind, and build original Lemmy content alongside it. Those things aren't mutually exclusive.

Also, please drop the main character syndrome and the "Reddit agent" paranoia. not just me. many people tried lemmy and back on reddit at this point. just too little content, too much moderation Can I point out - lemmy MAU is stangant 35k a month, this is a problem. if its still stagnant by now - it will never improve organically going forward: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/stats what is you...

lemmy MAU is stangant 35k a month

Social media usage is declining everywhere.

this is a problem.

It's not a problem if you consider that "Lemmy" is just one of the many ways that people can interact with the open social web. The Fediverse as whole has 50x more users. RSS feeds are (slowly) making a comeback. People who are really deep into their interests (photography, DIY audio, hardware) still have and prefer their specialized forums over hanging out with Reddit bots and agency interns that are doing "social media PR" on certain subs.

Seriously, it seems that you grew up in a time when Social Media was fun and exciting and you're too attached to those memories. These times are gone. Let go of the nostalgia, focus your energy on building something new and of your own instead of running around trying to convince the rest of the world that we need to go back to some imaginary utopia that never really existed.

I'm using it here as a filtering and moderation tool - checking community rules, duplicates, age, relevance, and other criteria before something gets posted. That's almost the opposite of blindly dumping content.

You can dislike AI on principle, but "AI was involved" isn't an argument that the resulting post is bad. Judge the content and whether it follows the community's rules.

lemmy MAU is stangant 35k a month Social media usage is declining everywhere. this is a problem. It's not a problem if you consider that "Lemmy" is just one of the many ways that people can interact with the open social web. The Fediverse as whole has 50x more users. RSS feeds are (slowly) making a comeback. People who are really deep into their interests (photography, DIY audio, hardware) stil...

I think this is exactly the disconnect: not everyone shares your vision of what the internet should become.

Saying "RSS is making a comeback" as an answer to stagnant social network growth is honestly kind of absurd. RSS is useful, but the average person isn't abandoning Reddit, Facebook, or TikTok to curate RSS feeds and hang out on specialized forums.

And "the Fediverse has 50x more users" doesn't solve Lemmy's problem. Someone wanting a Reddit-style discussion platform isn't interchangeable with someone posting on Mastodon or using another ActivityPub service.

I'm not asking to recreate some imaginary Reddit utopia. I want the good parts of Reddit: active communities, constant content, and discussion, without the centralized corporate platform, censorship, and control. A federated Reddit alternative is valuable precisely because it can provide that experience differently without corporate overlords banning whatever they want.

You may personally want something completely different from social media. That's fine. But that's your vision, not necessarily what everyone who might use Lemmy wants.

If Lemmy is stagnant and huge numbers of communities are nearly empty, telling potential users to "let go" and accept that they shouldn't want a Reddit-like experience clearly isn't working.

But it doesn't have to be either/or. We can have both. I didn't leave Reddit because every piece of content there suddenly became worthless. I left because of the platform around that content - moderation, censorship, bans, corporate control, and decisions about what you're allowed to see or say. The same interesting link, meme, news story, or discussion can exist on Lemmy without Reddit's mode...

Well, I've had arguments about this very issue before. If you ask me... If you do both, you do some good. At the same time you're also drowning people in noise. Which is going to be a disservice to everyone. Now I can't see the good content anymore because it's buried in random other stuff. I've muted several people because of that. I know some other people uphold similar opinions as me. Not everyone... But we really get a buttload of politics and news dumped here, copies of memes we already saw on some other platforms, making Lemmy seem like the cheap copycat... A lot of people rather have good content only and skip the added noise. That'd make it feel like a nice place. Maybe a bit smaller than the competition, but at least it has good content and a nice atmosphere. ... Every added non-genuine or original post takes away from that.

Yeah and everything is worse because of it now, so take your clanker simping somewhere else. It will gain you no sympathy here. Then again, this entire posts makes it quite clear you don't seem to have any ability to read the room.

I actually agree with part of this. Noise is a problem. But reposting does not automatically equal noise.

That's exactly why I'm not blindly mirroring feeds. Posts have to meet upvote thresholds, be recent, not already exist on Lemmy, fit the community, and pass additional filtering and moderation rules. The entire point is to select the stuff I think is actually worth seeing.

And "original" doesn't automatically mean "good" either. A mediocre original post isn't more valuable to me than an excellent article, meme, video, or discussion somebody discovered elsewhere.

The real question should be: is this something people in this community would actually want to see? Not: did this URL or meme ever appear on another website?

If the volume is too high, that's a legitimate discussion. Set reasonable posting limits or adjust the algorithms. But deliberately keeping communities nearly empty because everything must be original seems like a much bigger disservice.

I would rather have a smaller amount of carefully selected outside content mixed with genuine Lemmy content than stare at communities where the newest post is three weeks old.

I was starting to wonder because of your lengthy posts and use of emphasis, did you use AI to make this post?

Uploading AI slop and posting genuine content (reposted or "spammy" or not) are two very, very different things.

You're dumping duplicate posts. You don't read the room or any of the rules in the sidebar.... You're not doing anything like what you just said?

Not doing what you just said yourself is literally the reason why you get your posts removed. 👀

they re my posts - because im the one posting them onto lemmy. this is valid name. another thing reddit agents would do is argue pointless semantics and waste everyone time.

"Read the room" is exactly the mentality I'm questioning.

The room is 35k MAU and stagnant. Maybe optimizing everything around the preferences of the people already in the room is part of why nobody new is walking through the door.

And "everything is worse because of AI" isn't an argument. It's an opinion. I'm using AI as a tool for filtering, moderation, and automation. Judge the results.

If Lemmy only welcomes people who already agree with the existing culture on AI, content, reposting, and what the Fediverse is supposed to be, don't be surprised when it remains a tiny echo chamber.
and at the moment - its exactly what it is - a tiny 35k MAU stagnant echo chamber

But how do you know the large majority of users rejected it? You're measuring the people who complained, not the thousands of lurkers who never say anything. The fact that I'm here specifically because I wanted more content is itself evidence that there is demand. I'm obviously not the only person who opens Lemmy, sees a mostly empty community, and wishes there were more things to read and disc...

But how do you know the large majority of users rejected it?

Because I built the whole fucking thing and no one cared.

All the tools to get rid of Reddit and to have a mass migration were there. I've been running the infrastructure for over 2 years. It has cost me time, money. Countless nights working on something to the point has affected my own health and put an unnecessary strain on personal relationships.

And yeah, I might have had a handful of people that told me "thanks" and a some others that even saw the value in what I was trying to do. But looking back I can definitely say that what I gained from this was not worth all the pain and misery.
