There's "Linux Kernel Developer Workspaces" series on youtube. Spoiler: most of them look like dumpsters, even if discounting that it was over 10 years ago. I guess it takes certain type of trash goblin to work on linux kernel. |

Dunno about the jerk, but he's become a weirdo and I second the notion that he should no longer be idolized. That's gonna be embarrassing to walk back from in 2-3 years.
What did he do? |

Do people really use those standup desks? Can you get work done that way?
Yes they are awesome; The kind that adjusts for sitting or stnading. We had them at a company I worked at. You sit for a while ( like and hour or two) and then feel a bit uncomfortable so pull the level and slide to standing mode. Work an hour standing, then sit. |

You can. Standing for longer periods is very bad for your veins. Get a walking pad and also sit for at least the same time you stand. |

Never meet your heroes. Have you ever seen the way he rages at people on the mailing list? Don't get me wrong, he's made some incredible technical contributions that I'm thankful for, but I have to push back against claims that he is a well-adjusted dude.
Have you read the rants, he is often spot on. |

it depends on the type of person, I feel like. My company has offered those adjustable desks since before COVID. If you walk through our office you'll always see at least a few raised up. Most people prefer sitting down, but you'll see enough people getting use out of these that they definitely have some benefit. |

I actually really love the default wallpaper in KDE Plasma. It changes with every release. I have a friend who also uses Plasma, and before each release, we always joke that the new wallpaper is our most anticipated feature because we're too lazy to change our wallpapers ourselves and simply wait for new releases to do it for us.
I don't change mine on most GNOME installs, but I do like that the light/dark mode toggle also flips the wallpaper to a light dark version of the same style |

That's a nice standing desk tho. But who can stand using one screen??
Me. But a wide curved one + sway/i3 window manager |

It's a matter of learning your desktop environment's shortcuts for managing windows. For example, I always set up a 3x3 grid of virtual desktops on KDE so I can play act at being those weird wall street people with 9 monitors: ::: spoiler Virtual Desktops (also 3:2 superiority lol) :::
I ran a 3x3 grid configuration for a long time as well -- until I finally realized I needed more than that and upgraded to a 5x3 grid! 😅️ I use the center desktop for a maximized browser window and the most important stuff is usually in a plus shape immediately adjacent to that with less important things further away. |

I remember years ago there was a firmware source leak (or maybe the binary was analyzed or something) for gigabyte's led controller firmware/drivers that basically just exposed the firmware programming bus to user land because that's how they did lighting updates and the kernel mode driver just passed whatever the user mode driver gave it, which could include firmware updates to other hardware ...
Imagine if ransomware did a BYOVD and held your actual hardware ransom. Shit like that should never have been signed by Microsoft, let alone made it through developer review at Gigabyte. |

When I worked at Fred Hutch I knew a guy who used his standup desk while walking on his treadmill. [I also knew a guy who sat on a big ball.] |

You don't need multiple screens to code. You can split inside your editor if you need to look at two things, otherwise you just jump between things. Faster thank having to use multiple things
I felt the same until I got a second monitor. Having each app on a full screen and glancing back and forth between them beats flipping back and forth IMO. |

I love how just...normal...Linus is. Like...humble. Content. Like, hey, I revolutionized the world with a pet project. Nbd. When I was a kid I worshipped Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. I'm glad I realized later that Linus and Woz are the real heroes.
Yeah, Same here honestly |

Counterpoint: Linus was all out in the open. I wouldn't want to see what Bill Gates is like behind closed doors...especially as a kid. |

No one is saying hes on the level of gates or jobs or whatever. But that doesn't make him an angel either. It makes him human. He famously took a year off because he wanted to work on how toxic he was. The comment was never meet your hero's. Hes a good guy, but if you have had to work with him, you may be leas inclined to agree whole heartily. |

I have one at the head office. I love how it's adjustable, so I can stand up when I've been sitting for too long. Plus when I'm doing something that involves more than just keyboard and mouse (sych as plugging electronics and hardware around me) it's very convenient to be already standing. |

OK I love the idea of making it adjustable. I'm suddenly aware of my posture. |

as is often the case you need to follow the money, when you open up the linux foundation sponsor list and see google, microsoft, amazon, meta, and anthropic in the top tiers it gets kinda obvious why there was really no chance he'd decry the "product" from the companies paying him big bucks. it's really sad to me as well to see important free software projects go this route, i guess the gpl doesn't mean much anymore since apparently it's this widely accepted that you can introduce chatbot code with mysterious origins into your codebase now. |

From my experience as a new end user with basic questions and issues, it's pretty normal for a decent chunk of other linux users in general. I've met more angry Linux people when asking for help than I ever have for any other OS or software. It's a small minority I'm sure, but they're extremely vocal individuals. |

To be fair, they insisted that they were on good speaking terms. Seen from that one occasion where some article claimed that Linux was copied from MINIX and Tanenbaum dissed the article, defending Torvalds. |

While my setup isn't meant to be showy, I cannot operate with a single monitor these days. At work I have my laptop screen, a USB monitor to the right, a 36" ultra-widescreen up high, and a landscape 32" monitor to the left. I still want more screens. I basically want a Neil Pert monitor setup. |

I think using tiling based windows is one of the things that makes it easier for single monitor. I use i3 and it's way quicker to refer to something on another workspace compared to if I were to have them in separate monitors or stacked views. When using extra monitors i just have it open browser most of the time. |
