Men BAD.

Women GOOD.

Boomer humor for millenials.

Hmm, who do I believe, the precariat gig worker whose livelihood depends on procuring just the right kind of tomatoes or an alleged adult too lazy to go to the store but not too lazy to whine about every mild inconvenience on social media and might be making the entire story up for fake internet clout?

You sound like my dad in his insistence at all potatoes are baking potatoes. I'll just go make my jacket new potato then, sure it's only four centimetres across, nonetheless I'm sure it will make a lovely meal.

For most tomato uses an equivalent volume of cherry tomatoes works fine. In some cases they're superior because they're already divided into bite sized portions.

Tiny potatoes bake up a treat (in groups of course ) if you oil and salt the outsides first and time them correctly.

It is sexist, but I feel like at a different level. Growing up I was never expected to ever need to grocery shop, so no effort was made to familiarize me with the process. It was never said out loud, but skills like that were just assumed to be for women. No one said you couldn't, they just looked at you weird and you internalized that when you were young and just didn't think about it again. I am old but not that old, we had cell phones when I was a kid but our most advanced app was snake.

People don't realize how far we've come so fast but then also don't realize how unevenly applied that is. There are still a tremendous amount of men living objectively successful lives raised the exact same way I was that would be completely inexperienced with the idea of a produce aisle. If you're rich, poor or just in a specific culture you can still easily skip a lot of seemingly very basic skills and still be "well adjusted" by most metrics.

A bit sexist but upvoted for the potential. Here's how simple it is to remove the sexism:

What's an Instacart shopper?

Instacart is a grocery delivery app. You shop from the app from one or more stores and a person goes out and shops on your behalf and delivers it to your door. You get updates as your shopper is picking your items.

If a recipe calls for sun-dried tomatoes and you put in cherry tomatoes it will not work. You can't just swap between two different types of product.

If you don't own a car, or can't drive (at the moment) for some other reason, in a lot of suburbs in the US you literally don't have a choice.

Where I live in Germany there's also a lot of supermarket delivery, but they're generally picked and delivered by people working directly for the supermarket, not random gig economy dudes of the street, so since they have access to the stores inventory system they will automatically know what is available (and since the order app also has that access, you can't even order anything the supermarket already doesn't have in inventory at the time of ordering), and either automatically cancel, automatically substitute or send you a notification to pick an option if something is out.

Counter point: these services are relatively new and the majority of people in these suburbs got along fine without exploiting that labor before. There are edge cases that this may benefit (meals on wheels type situations) but I'd argue it's still borderline immoral to use them.

I'm working 8-5, 6-10 for the next 6 weeks. Sometimes it's helpful to have basic groceries at your door.

They did used to offer similar services between the 1950s and 1990s - just low-tech. You'd tell the milkman and the grocer what you wanted and it'd be on your doorstep at 7am in the morning.

I live in a place that had almost zero public transportation 8 years ago. 8 years ago I developed epilepsy and temporarily lost my driver's license due to this condition. The closest grocery store is 7 miles away and I live far from family and friends so grocery shopping was nearly impossible at times. Grocery delivery was one of my only ways to get food. It can be useful in more scenarios than you can imagine.

Weird because the author didn't mention any source of blame. Except the man, and men in general, of course.

I see your comment as a very charitable interpretation of a clearly sexist comment that would never be tolerated if it were a man disparaging a woman for not being good at something stereotypically in the domain of men, like cars or whatever.

We've really got over "I hate my wife" humour to replace it with "I hate my (hypothetical) husband" humour.

To be fair, any job will do that to a person. I worked in a whisky bar for 5+ years with decent pay and loved most of it, had a lot of fun. Worked my way from a casual bartender to fill time salaried venue manager. Won international whisky and cocktail awards.

But it started to wear on me having the exact same problems with the owner of the bar every single week, and the exact same conversation with the exact same regulars every single day. The only thing that changed was the people I work with. I started to feel like I barely knew anyone anymore because most of the staff were students or backpackers so they were in and out in 6 months tops. After the last full time bartender left for a different career it felt like I lost my last friend.

One day I rocked up to work to start setting up and the smell of the place hit me as I opened the door and I just broke down crying behind the bar at 28 years old. Handed in my 4 weeks notice that day. The owner didn't even bother to see me before I left even though he'd only owned the bar for 6 months longer than I'd worked there for him. A year later the place couldn't find a good replacement and shut down entirely.

Work is just depressing. We weren't made for this. And late stage capitalism is making things even worse where people aren't paid enough and aren't even considered employees anymore.

I'm happy you think my lived experience is charitable. I could just as easily say that yours is needlessly confrontational. And both of those opinions have the same merit. None.

And she clearly hated her husband enough to divorce him. So... Yeah. You're allowed to hate your ex. That's the whole point of having an ex. What's stupid is when you hate on your current spouse.

I'm not sure project management is a household task. So that feels a bit weird. Totally different relationship dynamic.

You get updates as your shopper is picking your items. Who needs that?

People with mobility issues, no car and no Supermarkets within walking distance, a lot of disabled people, temporarily or otherwise, me while tending to a sick cat who needed fluids every two hours and has allergies to a couple of very common things, etc.

I could go on but I think my point has been made. It is pointless for me to buy 4 packs of tortillas if the brand of beans that doesn't trigger my IBS is unavailable.

Your experiences are not up for debate - it's not the same thing as your interpretation of someone else's words. You haven't experienced the correct interpretation of the words from original author - you've experienced a situation that you see in those words. Your interpretation is therefore that they're talking about the same situation as you were in and, what's more, that their perception of it is the same as yours. Because that interpretation goes beyond the actual words they used, and because the words they used really sound like they're saying something else, that makes it charitable.

And she clearly hated her husband enough to divorce him.

Sounds like more interpretation of the situation that goes beyond the words written. Maybe you've got additional insight into it that isn't in the post?

You’re allowed to hate your ex. That’s the whole point of having an ex

I love them on sandwiches, you can place the halves to fit the shape of the bread. And you're going to cut those caprese slices to fit in your mouth anyway. Use smaller basil leaves and cheese pieces with cherry-tomato halves, it would be very pretty. Or just make "Roman Salad," with whole ones, bocconcini, pesto and extra chopped basil. Delicious!

(I have cherry tomatoes growing vigorously in a pot on my balcony, just from poking a ripe one into the dirt and watering.)

If a recipe calls for sun-dried tomatoes and you put in cherry tomatoes it will not work. You can't just swap between two different types of product.

You can "sun-dry" (in real sun or a dryer) cherry tomatoes (and oil them if that's the kind of sundried ones you need)

Can't speak for Instacart, but DD had a problem where the store could have a perfectly acceptable substitute in stock. But, the store didn't have the replacement UPC/SKU registered with DD. Because DD didn't know what you were adding, the shopper app would simply not allow the shopper to make the substitution.

So if the store switched produce suppliers, they could have 40 bushels of tomatoes available at the store, but the shopper wouldn't be able to put any of them in the cart.

I used to have to wander around trying to find products the same price as the replacement, then explain to the customer why I was adding a scannable $3.17 9 volt battery as a substitute for unscannable $3.17 worth of brussel sprouts.

Because they will often say something is unavailable when it absolutely is, or will substitute an item that's no way a legitimate substitution.

I've heard that women have a lot of trouble with getting correct period products.

It often is, but for instance, if they're out of the pills I use to be able to digest lactose, then buying milk and cheese is a waste for me, if they're out of tortillas then I can make chilli with mostly the same ingredients, but if they're out of the specific type of beans I need, then I have to rethink my whole purchase order, and stuff like that.

Roasting implies cooking them in some kind of fat. Roast potatoes are doused in fat after having been parboiled and their outsides roughened specifically to cook better in that fat. A baked potato is just heated dry. (And if you just ate them like that they'd be shit, but you typically add some butter or cheese)

Try rubbing your big ol' russet potato with a little oil and seasoned salt before baking it next time.
Little potatoes like this treatment too, no parboiling needed.
When finished, add your butter/sour cream/chives/cheese/bacon as you usually prefer. Because they're still baked potatoes, just with crackly delicious skin and slightly less dry center.
