It makes it easier for the syrup elves to handle the bottles. Most people don’t recognize this part of syrup production and prefer to gloss over the cruelty behind their sweet treat. It can be ethically produced but most producers refuse to comment on their presence of elves in their operation. |

Syrup used to be stored in large, thick, clay jugs, a gallon or more. These vessels were pored by means of resting them on your shoulder and hooking a finger (or two!) into the loop for control. These smaller bottles have vestigial loops. |

I’m pretty sure it’s the same as those tiny milk bottles that look just like the gallons, these are just based off the larger jugs they used to use. |

I think traditionally you'd want it while glass-blowing and shaping, but obviously these aren't handcrafted so it's more of a cosmetic piece. |

I like the cold syrup on my breakfast stuff, its more viscous and creates a nice hot/cold heterogeneity. |

You can also put the bottle in the microwave for a few seconds. Keep a close eye on it though, things can go bad really quickly when you do that. Edit: be sure to remove the cap first! |

Hmm. Okay. I suppose the bottle might be hot even if you don't completely submerge it. But, then what, do you hold it with a gloved hand? If it's not that hot, then why would I need a hook? I accept this is the intended use, I just don't see it being particularly useful that way. It's also possible this is just vestigial decoration from the older, larger jugs.

You do not fully submerge it. Take the lid off and hang it submerged 3/4 of the way. I normally hang it from a string tied to a wooden spoon over a tall pot. Put the bottle on the table to cool a bit while you finish up setting the pancakes. I didn't wait. I just wrapped the bottle with a little towel and poured it hot on my pancakes. |

Yes. The syrup has to be room temperature, then warmed by the food. Having to top-up with cold syrup late in the meal because you misjudged the ratio is unpleasant… maybe there is an application for this technique there, but I also don’t care to put pre-warmed syrup on as a rule. |

You can get by with just a pinky but it's tough when you're still young and in school. Kids can be so mean. |

Dunno origin, but id throw a rope or small chain into loop and attach next to saddle of my horse or maybe belt of my pants, so i'd keep it around all the time. It's for carrying. |

If you consider liquor bottles, you will have to admit that the looks of the bottle must be a big part of the marketing and appeal. A lot of people in that business obviously consider it important that their bottles are distinctive. And maybe it's at least a little bit that way for syrup, too. If you're asking people to pony up extra money for real maple syrup, maybe it makes sense to distinguish the bottle with extra cozy-homey-old-timey signifiers. All that said, the brands of maple syrup I've been buying don't have a vestigial jug handles. Many of them don't. |

Most of the maple syrup I see comes in 540ml cans. The bottles are almost always more expensive. Custom glass packaging in relatively small quantities is much more expensive than mass-produced standardized cans. |
