Did you get a carrier unlocked phone?

My sister made some photos for me with her iPad recently. I told her to sent me the photos but she just didn't know where they were. She could access them with some photo apps but the file system was completely obfuscated. She looked to me because I am the tech guy in our family but I had no idea.

Ah yes, I love when i am considered the tech guy and everyone just turn to me when something on their device does not work, especially when it's made by apple or is a printer...

It doesn’t make sense to you that photos are in the photos app?

The photos app should of cause be a way to view the photos, but ultimately I expect to access them via the file system.

Don't buy from Verizon or any carrier that locks bootloaders on phones, usually used global Pixels are the best choice

IOS is soon to recognize that data can be stored in these things called "files" that are located in what's called a "folder" and maybe the user can even decide where on this thing called a "hard drive" these "files" and "folders" are located instead of typing into a random search bar.

hard drive

Are you talking about pre-2013 Macs now?

It's always been like that. I had one of the first ipads as part of a trial to see if they were useful for grading papers in grad school. No. It was completely fucking useless because the only way to open files for editing was through sixteen shitty cloud services that each app wanted you to use. There was no way to just download files, edit them, and then put them back on blackboard like a nor...

Basically the only apple mobile device I actually used was a gen 1 iPod touch I instantly jailbroke so I'm not super familiar. I use a Mac mini only for music but osx is getting so shitty now I'm wanting to change again or go back to 10.5 lol.

Got a powermac g4 cuz I wanted one again (and it came with a CRT monitor I wanted) and I was blown away how smooth it runs with 512 mb of ram. We have truly gone downhill a long fucking way in 20 years. I remember when I was optimistic about tech.

Still use Windows 10 Mobile.

I need to pull out my old WinCE builder app. I can't even remember what it was named, PowerBuilder or something like that.

Yes, prior to Windows Mobile, it was literally named "WinCE". Still the most amazingly obtuse OS name in programming history.

Sorry, having unlocked bootloaders is unsafe for the children or whatever. Best we can do is mandatory OS and age verification every 45 seconds. Please do not resist.

The Fairphone 6 and 6+ is something to keep an eye on, specifically with TheMightyCat's build of postmarketOS. It's almost fully functional with a close-to-mainline kernel, unlike Jolla phones and UBPorts, which both rely on Android kernels which will eventually stop being supported.

It seems like TheMightyCat just generates code, which cannot be upstreamed to pmOS due to the policy on generated code.

Their generated code has been criticised by some kernel developers because of lack of quality. I think some sensors were accessed without using hexagonrpcd, which means battery usage will be unnecessarily high, which is an improper way of doing it.

Also, mainline kernel support is actively being worked on by Fairphone employees, which know the hardware best. All remaining features will be added in due time.

I had to return the phone TWICE for exactly this problem. I bought a specifically unlocked phone, and got a locked one twice, directly from Google. They just do not care.

You need to buy an "unlocked" model. They sell carrier-locked devices at a discount so that they can install spyware on them, and then lock them down so you can't remove it or take it to another carrier.

Not to "My generation good other generations bad," but Millennials and Gen X really grew up with technology as it was becoming impressively capable, but required a lot of technical know-how to use. It's really apparent in the workplace: our fresh-out-of-college guys and ready-for-retirement guys alike come to people around my age when stuff isn't working. Everything's too easy now, and it's hard to look under the hood. (Of course, there are still exceptions for enthusiasts, but you're never forced to tinker with a raspberry pi.)

I've been an android user since I started using smart phones in the late 2000s. Android IMO has always been more user friendly and allowing someone to create their own "desktop" so to speak. Meanwhile Apple was always the "I don't like technology" phone. There was no customization, the "desktop" was just the Android app page and nothing else. Nothing could be unique to you outside of a wallpaper or a ringtone. Anyone with an iPhone just had an iPhone. It was the same thing. But someone with the same android phone could have different app placements, widgets here or there, and felt different even if it was the same phone.

Apologies for the rant, I am stoned as fuck and I ramble (And have a new keyboard I am trying to break in)

... But what has Apple "caught up to" all the "main android features"?

Its scary watching clueless parents give their children full reign of iPads and the corpo net. There aren't enough tech literate parents out there to train kids how it all really works, and we know schools sure as heck aren't. I am almost positive we will see the most ignorant generation since the boomers now. I fear for my future medical needs to be taken care of by Hunter who grew up with YouTube kids and only used the gibbity from age 4 and up.

Has Apple improved Siri yet? When I asked Siri "What are humans made of?", she answered "Humans are made of human body." Fkn hilarious. Meanwhile Android phones have had Gemini for a long time now. And now Apple is giving up on developing their own AI models and will be paying Google to use Gemini for Siri. Might as well just pay less for an Android phone and get the same Gemini model.

So you think someone is a dork because they make a device they use every day easier to use uniquely for them? So I'm a dork because I have two weather widgets on my phone for hourly updates, and one for radar because I work outside? Or that I have a clock that shows my local time in Canada as well as the time in Zagreb, Croatia because my girlfriend lives there?

Is someone a dork who installs a new version of Windows who installs their games or makes folders for their finances add to the main wallpaper so they have easier access to their games or the folders for their finances?

Every phone has widgets. That's not customizing a UI element. If you change the colors and fonts of everything, if you have an opinion on the minimize animation, if you spend more time ricing your machine than using it, you're a dork.

I've run into that a couple times and it's super frustrating because there's 2 different types of "unlocked", and they're pretty much all carrier unlocked these days, where an AT&T SIM card will work in a Verizon branded device, but the Verizon ones for sure never allow OEM unlocking. If buying new from Google, I've always bought the "Unlocked" option. If buying used, I've given the seller instructions on how to check that the option is available. At least on Swappa, it's been a pretty painless process.

They do actually have a pretty decent file manager. Unsurprisingly you can’t access system files, at least as far as I know. It’s not nearly as robust as what you can do on android, but it is easy to use.

Seems like you were one year early. Files app was released in 2017. 9 years ago. Before that you pretty much had to use iTunes to transfer stuff. Now you can just plug in USB and see all the data from files app.

You were able to use a usb and file transfer to a computer from dcim for many years before this. It was separated by folders based on the month the photo was taken.

Kinda hilarious how out of touch most are in this thread. But it’s expected here.

It was a Document scanning app. We didn't bother, she found them at home and sent me a USB stick. It's true though that I saw this behavior on some Android founds too, where there was only the system file explorer available. If she just took photos they’re just in the photos app. That makes not a lot of sense to me tbh

Why does that not make sense? Photos are in the photos app.

I have been daily driving linux phones as my only phone for over two years. Typing to you now from a phone I ported myself, which has been in my pocket for 3 months now.

Linux phones are where Linux desktops were 10 years ago. A few of us who are lucky can get away with using them because we don't require proprietary software on our personal devices, but many people will struggle without their Facebook app or their Garage Door Opening app or their Ford Connect app or whatever else. That said, SailfishOS has a decent compatibility layer, but it in itself is proprietary.

SFOS isn't paid; just the proprietary features on the official ports (Android App Support and Exchange Activesync).

Community ports and official ports without those features have always been free.

Ability to change colors and fonts are accessibility features, animation can be distracting and frustratingly long, what's dorky about trying to change the behaviour of device instead of changing yourself to meet some dorks expectations on how things should look and feel?

Shittest thing about Android phones are all those third party apps, which you can’t even remove (looking at especially you, Samsung) Facebook, and so on. Unbelievable amount of bloat ware with almost every manufacturer. I would like to have Samsung, but I just can’t stand its UI and those apps.

There's a program called universal android debloater which let's you delete pretty much anything you want. I've used it and it's like a miracle.

Still once you get to that stage it's so much more tempting to skip that and get busy on trying to get postmarketOS going or something.
