That shit is happening on a daily basis. But with risk-averse, money-hungry corporations in control of studios and distributors, none of it will ever see the light of a theatre projector

That's because they probably think you're not intelligent enough to understand the genius

Are we talking about the same guy? The general view on Brandon Sanderson is that he's not an extremely gifted technical writer. He's commonly said to have some of the most basic prose. Like you can like his World building and all that but I mean the writing itself is just about a step above pedestrian really. I don't think that's a contentious Topic at all.

Mark my words: we haven't seen the end of "hit songs." Think of songs like "I Want It That Way." Or "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." "Smells Like Teen Spirit." "Despacito." There may be 2-3 other examples I'm omitting, but my point is I'm not talking local band shit. I'm predicting (hell, prophesying) another very popular song. Think millions of people listening to a song, loving it, talking about it, covering it. Hell maybe it'll even have a music video. I think we'll see another one in our lifetimes.

Oh that sounds like a nightmare to make it work and not limit the creation of most new works. This is the first time I've heard about that. Shit people like Patrick Rothfuss wrote himself into a corner in only a couple books, attaching series is asking for stumps. Just let works be free and seperate

If building a world limits your options, you're really not doing it correctly.

Its not building a world, it's merging several worlds and then saying the physics all match up and the magic only works in one way or another while not working in other areas. Dudes got like 80 books or some shit. Unless he was really just using the same stuff over and over which would get tired by the second or third series, I just don't see how it would blend well.

Marvel was not that big in mainstream culture before the MCU. So it's basically new. It was just very successful, there are other comics that never got that big but could.

Spider-Man has been pretty iconic since the 60s. My mom could easily recognize Spider-Man, but probably would struggle with Batman.

Nah man. I don't even think hardcore fans are like that. Hell I got like a dozen of his books on my shelf right now and I think his dialogue is downright cringey. Dude is a cookie cutter writer. I've been on his fan forums I've watched his YouTube videos, I never seen nothing like that.

If you've encountered that kind of person that's not your normal hardcore fan. You've encountered some like hyper psychotic Ultra Fringe group of people. Utterly minute.

Sorry I should have said Fanboy or something maybe? The people I know who are obsessed with his shit are the same people who are like dude you gotta listen to this band, they're called tool. And I'm like yeah they're cool. Only to find out I apparently just didn't get it.

(Don't get me wrong, tool is great. But they didn't invent math rock or anything. That's just an example.)

I don't think so. Because nobody can get the funding for anything original anymore. Its all cobtroles by business men and everyone wants as much profit as possible. Also one of the reasons everything is so bland and pg 13.

Harry Potter is the one that comes to mind. Also Game of Thrones if you’d like. Both really blew up, have spin offs and staying power. Harry Potter has toys, video games, and amusement parks.

it helps they are pretty much legacy franchises that had an original story. MCU is not that, disney tries too hard to tie them all into a smorgasbord shows. i think the pre-disney marvel shows were much better(the ones that were cancelled by disney because of the merger).

There were some blockbuster Batman movies in the 90s, hell there was the Adam West show going back to the 60s.

That's exactly the one I was thinking of. It was extremely influential on TV and pop culture, in the same way that Star Wars was for film.

Depends if you are talking about the novels or the TV series (or though the former is still considerably newer than Star Wars). The TV series was very influential on modern TV and spawned a whole generation of "Game of Thones-like" gritty and violent historical dramas. It also popularised the trope of no character being safe from a violent twist.

I was about to bring up those as well. The next closest that didn't really hit the "spin-off" level was the hunger games, but definately could.

There are several new things in the same universe, so I wouldn't say there aren't spin-offs. They're still going. I would say this is one of the many correct answers for this.

To extend the "that will never work" part, for "Game of Thrones" author George R R Martin once said,

From basically the mid-’80s through the mid-’90s, I was involved in television. Whenever I turned in the script in my first draft, I would always get the reaction, “George, we love it, but it’s five times our budget, so… Can you go back and cut things?

And when I finally left television and film and went into prose in the mid-90s, I said, I don’t care about that anymore, I’m going to write something just as big as my imagination, I’m going to have all the characters I want, and gigantic castles, and dragons, and direwolves, and hundreds of years of history, and a really complex plot, and it’s fine because it’s a book. It’s essentially unfilmable.

I think this post just ignores a lot of things out there.

The book Jurassic Park was released in 1990, and the film released in 1993. Since then we've had a handful of films and other spin-offs, all within the last 50 years.

The book The Hunger Games was released in 2008, and the film released in 2012. Since then we've had a handful of films and I would bet many more to come.

What about the Pokemon media franchise? Originally released in 1996 and is one of the largest franchises with video games, TV shows, movies and everything else.

That's not really the point though. The post isn't about something new since Star Wars. The idea is something new with a similar scope and scale of Star Wars. They're not using that as an example of the last thing that was made.

Well I'm definitely talking about the novels cuz you don't publish a TV series. But what either one has to do with being newer than Star Wars I'm not sure. That's not the point of this post y'all know that right?

It's exactly the point. "A new Star Wars or Marvel within our lifetime" was the prediction, and we're arguing that one such example has already existed. Unless you are a child and weren't alive/conscious and therefore don't consider it within your lifetime?

If you think Harry Potter doesn't have the scale of Star Wars then you're crazy. As proof of this, Universal built their Harry Potter lands, and Disney tried to compete with their Star Wars land. They're pretty equal in scale. (Well, unless you mean the scale of their universe, but that's silly.)

The last thing I watched in theaters was a reshowing of the Fellowship of the Ring. Everything else is on a buddy's Plex server. Fuck the movies I ain't paying 50 dollars for sticky floors and shitty snacks. I can do both of those at home.

Do you live in the sticks or what? Tickets are $15 and every theater I've been to since COVID has been clean.

K-Pop Demon Hunters was like that. Nobody but Netflix believed in it, and that's why there was barely any merchandise for its first Christmas. Companies would not get on board. Now stores are covered with stuff.

That will likely grow into a huge franchise and it started last year

A lot of these replies show how confident people are in being out of touch. Out here acting like nothing good is getting made while only paying attention to the big franchise flicks with big advertising budget lol

It's like saying they don't make good music anymore when you only listen to top 40 radio on your 15-minute commute.

To answer the question in the OP: Yeah man, no duh. Things aren't popular forever and something always replaced it. There's dozens of franchiseable IPs out there right now.

Since you mentioned sports. I wonder if there will ever be a new sport that rises to the level of football, etc. in our lifetimes? That seems far less likely.
