Too bad the movie was crap

Yeah, I appreciate what it was trying to do - it had some good scenes in it; the gas station confrontation in the beginning was well done, and did a good job of setting the stage for how they were adapting the original text into a modern movie, but I thought the movie itself just drug on, and the more I think about it now, I think the scenes I did enjoy, I enjoyed largely because of the banger soundtrack. I did buy that CD, though, back in the day, and listened to it a lot.

Flash by Queen From the movie Flash Gordon

Im going to assume you are just being comparative, and saying that the song is just so good that no movie could be better.

Because otherwise you would be insinuating that flash Gordon is a bad movie. And we dont tolerate that kind of heresy

Yeah, if only because Flash—Ahhhaaahhaaa—is the savior of the universe. You know, that Flash—Ahhhaaahhaaa—he'll save every one of us.

White Christmas.

Of course it is.

Few remember that it won the Oscar for 1942. Fewer still remember the film was called Holiday Inn

It wasnt in the movie though, right?

The film pre-dates the song by about 34 years, so no.

I'm not saying Flash Gordon is a bad movie, just that it would be the height of blasphemy to even suggest that any mere movie could approach the greatness of Her Majesty, Queen.

Smash Mouth - All Star. It’s so popular from Shrek that most people forget (or never knew) that it started in Mystery Men.

It’s so popular from Shrek [...]

[...] it started in Mystery Men.

I was 15 years old in 1999 when Smash Mouth dropped their second album, "Astro Lounge." All Star was the hit song released on that album and it was all over the radio for the next couple years.

It was an extremely popular single at the time. Everyone in my school would drop everything to sing along if it came on the radio. Most of my friends (myself included) owned the album on CD. And to think the song was written as an afterthought, when they were finished with the album but needed more songs to fill it out a bit.

And yes, Mystery Men (1999) was the first film to prominently feature the song. But that film was technically a flop at the time of release, so most people didn't even see it. Which is why no one knows that All Star was in that movie.

Right as the song's popularity was finally starting to die down, Shrek (2001) released and brought All Star back to life. And it's become the anthem for Shrek movies ever since.

It was an incredibly popular song on its own back in the day. Shrek just ensured it lasted for several generations instead of dying out in the early 2000s.

Axel F - Harold Faltmeyer ("Beverly Hills Cop" title)

The movies were super popular, but the title music became chart topping, and basically turned into the archetypical sound of the 80's

Kiss From a Rose by Seal. I couldn’t even tell you what the plot of Batman Forever was.

Ace Ventura teams up with the cop from The Fugitive, so Iceman has to team up with that guy from NCIS:LA to defeat them

Joel Schumacher of all people. To follow Tim Burton. That's like hiring Dean Koontz to finish George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones), or to pick up an unfinished Neil Gaiman series.

He was a good director though. It’s just that he wanted to do Batman with nipple armour.

Had to scroll way to far down to find this. Both because how big the song got, and how literally dozens of us watched Mystery Men.

Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" comes to mind.

And it wasn't even really in City of Angels. There was a part of an acoustic version over one brief scene, and that was it.

I know this, because I rewatched it a few months ago and was genuinely surprised at how tangential the song was the movie, but how inextricably linked the two are.

I discovered fairly recently that Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) was originally recorded as the soundtrack to a movie called Against All Odds.

Until then, I had no idea that movie existed.

Is the song that popular? In my circle, people only know it from the movie (but a lot of people know the movie).

The Bodyguard soundtrack is a top tier album on its own merit; the movie is okay.

I'm not sure I'd say Eye of the Tiger more famous than Rocky. Any more than Glory of Love was bigger than Karate Kid or We Don't Need Another Hero was bigger than Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

But I do feel like we still listen to the songs and never watch the movies, so they are enduring in a way the movies aren't. Though now I want to watch a bunch of 80's flicks. Weird Science. Flash Gordon. Highlander.

You know what's a weird outlier, though, now that I'm thinking about it? Batdance. Must be the movie quotes in it pin the song too closely to the movie. Ghostbusters didn't have that problem, though. Hmm.

Flashdance had two songs ("what a feeling" and "maniac") that everyone knows even if they haven't seen the movie.

My kids saw Shrek! not too long ago and got into that song. So I put the video from YouTube up for them and did a double take because I had completely forgotten that the video itself is a tie-in to Mystery Men (which is severely underrated imo)

I love Mystery Men. It was just the perfect mix of camp and heart. It's criminally underrated. I kinda get it — it's hammy and ridiculous, but there was just an earnestness to it. It was full of tropes, but never boring or formulaic. Familiar, while being totally unexpected. It felt like watching people play a tabletop superhero RPG.

"Young Guns" - Bon Jovi (Young Guns 2)

As good as the 1995 movie was, and it was good, the Techno Syndrome Mortal Kombat song was a certified banger. Honorable mention to Blood Rave from the Blade Soundtrack
