I hold people who hold that opinion personally responsible for the additional deaths across the middle east, the audacity to look at all this unneeded death and say oh ya it was would have been just as bad either way.... i truly hope its guilt causing that cognitive dissonance man.

Sure mate, and Biden (whose politics on Israel Kamala explicitly said she approve) didn't send 2000lb bombs (that the US Military themselves don't use because they have too much collateral damage) to Israel to bomb Gaza with.

On the Israeli Genocide, by their own words Kamala and Trump were very much the same.

On Iran, probably not.

On Fascism in America itself, definitely not.

It would be trully spectacular if the age validation and social media restrictions laws yielded a rebirth of 90s-style Internet (which was vastly superior and yay more decentralized than the hypercomercialized grift-central bot-riddled shit we have now)

They may even figure out how to run a newsgroup.

It really is amazing that given how long humans have been around that so many of the older ones have yet to learn that the one thing that will for sure make the younger ones want to do something, and find creative ways to do it, is to try and prevent them from doing it. Hell, it is not even necessarily just young people. Look at the lengths prisoners go to in an effort to get around jailhouse r...

Impressive if the schools are smart enough to rely on whitelists instead of blacklists.

They don't maintain the blocklists themselves but often times the crappy vendor just uses a crappy whitelist whenever a school complains about something being bypassed.

That's very creative way to bypass school restrictions. The laptops in school are usually heavily monitored by software by the school

I remember back being a high school freshman in nineth grade finding all sorts of ways to access pornography and other inappropriate websites, but also countless hours figuring out how to listen to music, ultimately finding Pandora in its inception and then abusing tf outta the replay mechanics there. Y'know, I created ten stations around this one band to skip a hundred times and listen to the same three or four songs over n over. Looking back, my mental algorithms for approaching such problems was fundamentally different. I didn't know things, so I tried anything. This strategy, in the grander picture, is something the FBI banks on dem yutes doing to thus give credence to keep tabs and thus generate leverage to use in the future.

If the government takes a picture of you jaywalking, they will always have that picture, and it gets really inconvenient when you have a hundred pictures of you jaywalking, or whatever. Especially since the aliens of the Illuminati, or whatever we're called, will trick you beforehand, to really fuck you over in ways you are ignorant and naive of.

Just how the police state works, y'know?

Yeah personally I'm kind of, like, impressed. I keep hearing that kids these days are so used to frictionless devices that they have no problem-solving skills whatsoever when it comes to tech, but, today's kids actually aren't that different than yesterday's.

To get around blocks, we just configured the internet connection settings to use a proxy server. Once someone figured that out, word spread and then we all had access to everything.

Kids will always work around blocks. Whitelists don't work because they inevitably block something you need to access and that's frustrating. Blacklists don't work because you can't review every site and everything it does. Even if you can, new ones they shouldn't access are popping all the time. And even if they aren't, it takes one clever kid to run a proxy server at home and give access to the whole school. The adults don't realize that computers and the internet are built like Russian nesting dolls. Inside your site can live the entire damned internet or an NES emulator or an LLM that does your homework or whatever the hell you want. Having internet access means having access to the whole internet. Kids interpret censorship as damage and route around it.

As long as general purpose computer devices are widely available, I think you're right. Which, of course, will mean that "general purpose computers are not fit for for the broad public and should be restricted to a privileged licensed few for your own good." This possibility is something I worry about.

Keep in mind these kids are as young as 8. I don't know any 8 year olds that have 100 bucks to spent on a phone. Also their parents would find out immediately.

The government are creating the type of netizens they do not want to have.

Certainly the oligarchic part of the government doesn't want that. But if the government is of the people, then it should. Meta wants people hooked as early as possible. If kids can't access big social media, a competitor will fill the niche or kids will work out how they can run their own infrastructure that can easily do some of the things big social media does. That's a win.

my parents used to take the mouse away sometimes when they would leave me alone in the house. Turns out windows has a function where you can use the numpad to replicate the mouse called "mousekeys". I also only used this power for good

i used this feature (but on kde plasma de on linux) when i obtained a rlly old (2012) laptop with no touchpad drivers for linux

You also used rotary phones and leaded gasoline. How did that asbestos and DEET work out for you? Don’t forget the thalidomide and red dye #5 Some things are best left in the past /quit

I was using IRC in 2002. Leaded gasoline was banned in my country by 1996. Thalidomide came out in 1957 and is still used in some circumstances.

If you're going to critique IRC for being old tech, at least pick a consistent timeframe.

You just want Reddit to go back to the Spacedicks and Jailbait age. Don't lie. We see who you are.

Reddit started in 2005, well after the Net boom and crash when the Internet became comercialized, and did not exist in the 90s.

90s internet was things like Usenet, IRC and Geocities. In fact in the early part of the decade the WWW hadn't even been invented yet and people used stuff like FTP and later the Gopher protocol.

The 90s on the Internet was a period of inventiveness and explosive technological growth and Reddit came in the coattails of all that, already by the time every grifter and their dog thought they could get rich from the Internet, and added nothing of real value to it: just another social media site trying to exploit business networking effects to lock-in users same as plenty of already existing sites.

You could use SSH as an instant messaging system. Tmux and split your screen, top half runs watch -n 0.5 "cat msglog" then the bottom half echo "msg" >> msglog, you could make it fancier with a script to open that all up and automatically add usernames to the start of each message.

Good luck blocking SSH. At that point you are looking at just banning computers and networks.

TIL!

https://www.reddit.com/r/geek/comments/26lkml/a_trick_from_my_school_days_you_can_open_up_a/

Start > Run > "DXDIAG"

Select the Network tab

Select Test DirectPlay

Use DirectPlay8 TCP/IP Service Provider and a preferred port

Create New Session

Then simply have your friend join the session, entering your IP or NETBIOS name. magic.

Neat trick!

My college (while learning computer science) thought a proper social media block was to whip up a hosts file that it pushed to every PC when it rebooted. It would just route certain sites to a black hole.

The freaking librarian would go around showing students how to delete the hosts file. Dude was out of pocket, he would print off whole chapters of text books for you too so you wouldn’t have to spend hundreds on the book. What a legend.

To be clear, this is a good thing: New generation's should be finding creative solutions to building a community rather than inheriting one controlled by a 40 year old billionaire with every incentive to continue manipulating their behavior in ways that don't align with their self interest

When my wife insisted that I set up a porn filter to prevent our teenager from finding "bad things" on the internet, I did the most basic DNS filter, and told our son that there was a filter and that I would be impressed if he found a way around it and could keep his discovery quiet so I wouldn't have to set up something more effective.

I was that kid running my own proxy server at home. I charged $5 for access but people just started sharing credentials instead of paying lol
