Its crazy to me that no one is saying "if rhe AI is doing all the jobs maybe we can spend more time with the family and children we supposedly love."

Because you'll only get the time to spend with them; not the means to feed and house them or yourself.

That cost labor to buy.

Is there a piece of technology that doesn’t?

Even making your own wheel would cost your time first…

Then then the argument isn't about jobs and feeding that narrative is unproductive

You're the one who asked "Why isn't anyone saying that [great labor saving technology] will give us more free time?"

Pretty sure every piece of technology past the wheel can be considered to save humans time with their tasks.

No the tasks increase to fill the saved time.

Which they already optimize for. If we all make less we only widen the gap between the oligarchs and labor. Two classes that dont ever mingle anyway.

100%. We should be using AI as the catalyst for a new union movement

Why constantly add more tasks? There’s only finite amount of maintenance on a house or things that need to get done.

I would posit that rose-colored glasses serve the capitalist class, and that it serves the interest of labor to make realistic assessments and adjust behavior accordingly. That is a message of strategy and success.

I just dont believe we will ever reach consensus until a certain class of people miss a few meals.

Well even under the current framework, we just need enough people to consistently vote for left wing (i.e. not liberal and obviously not conservative) candidates, who will seek to protect workers from this situation through a variety of ways (e.g. stronger social security to eliminate the need to labour for survival, nationalisation of the companies taking the labour so the public benefits, wealth redistribution from those who have already enriched themselves on the back of others' work)

Failing that, history gives some examples of more extreme measures that can be employed

Sounds like a great plan, but I don't understand how it would increase cash flow to the billionaires.

Billionaires make pretend money from stock increases in their portfolios, and then they borrow real money against those phantom funds.

They don't really have to sell a product to consumers, they just need to manipulate the markets to keep increasing. There are lots of ways to do that without actually selling to broke citizens - layoffs, austerity programs, announcement of technology breakthroughs, fraud, PR campaigns, etc.

Because they dont own you or your heart.

My heart doesn't put food on the table and I do it only through selling my labor, which is what capitalists buy from me. So in very significant way they do own me because without them I can't afford to live.

Washing machine. Also, lighter work loads and less time consuming are different arguments - unless you mean no technology has ever resulted in neither, which is a rather bold statement.

Before washing machines, people would hand off washing to professionals. Now the expectation is that the person who can afford it must wash things themselves. More time spent on that.

No it isn't. Well it is but lazy and untalented people have been doodling for ever, actually creative and talented people are using it too. And no, I'm not going to "prove it" because whatever I post you will say it's crap, even if it's actually by Picasso.

My heart requires food and a semi-stable mental state to do the job well. Right now that means selling my hours to them. Whether they 'own' me or not is irrelevant.

There is a massive gap between rose tinted glasses and crippling nihilism. By your last comment it seems that we are both somewhere in between.

What I wrote is true, but it does not mean that it is all roses or even anywhere near as friction free as it once was, but you absolutely can still find success in this shitshow.

What you responded is also true. We need strong labor (amongst many other things) and a realistic view of the current state of our society before we can make any headway.

The point I wanted to make is that it does not serve one's self to throw their hands up in the air, exclaim that there is no point, wait for society to magically fix itself, and do nothing but complain on the Internet.

I believe that we are stronger and more resilient than we give ourselves credit for, and maybe that's where I concede I might have rose tinted glasses.

Doodling isn't lazy. You're actively creating art whether it's good or not. AI cannot create art, it can only copy art. If I copy Picasso, should my "art" be respected the same as Picasso's?

I am an artist, went to school for it and everything. You wouldn't be able to "prove it" because I actually know art. AI "art" isn't creative, it's just worse mimicking than a person could do.

Better technology frees more time for other tasks. Whether that's work or leisure depends on the individual. Everyone has the same 24 hours a day independent of how you use them. Most people don't just sit and do nothing. To even suggest that things like an electric stove, washing machine, lawnmower or a bicycle aren't saving people real time on tasks they'd have to do either way is ridiculous.

No, the preceding statement is true and correct, in my estimation. The only issues would be will and focus, and with practice, these are remedied.

Edit to add: all this presumes upwardly mobile jobs are actually available, the body and mind meet the physical and intellectual requirements, and transportation isn't an issue.

Nowadays I'm self-employed but back in my previous job I was paid by the hour. I earn exactly the same amount of money independent of whether I spend the whole day cutting steel with a hacksaw or an angle grinder but from my perspective as an employee, the angle grinder sure saves me a ton of effort. Same applies to other tools, better workwear and so on. Yeah, I don't get to go home at 12pm because the better tools were so much faster but it sure made the 8 hours I spent at the jobsite that much less unpleasant. Naturally that is even more so the case now that I'm the beneficiary of the work that got done quicker.

I honestly can't believe how cynical some people are here. I truly don't envy you.
