Does this imply that some anthems ironically mention boobs?

You might read it that way, but it doesn't make the other reading wrong the way that user SwingingTheLamp was suggesting.

No, reading it in that way is wrong. The lyrics are talking about the land, the country. Not a person. In context it can only mean heart or core, not breast.

The state flag of Virginia has boobs on it, also an active call for violence. Not the same, but its in the spirit of the post.

Yep, unless they count Austrias "secret anthem" by Reinhardt Fendrich - I am from Austria, which references blood.

Oh, you mean they knew the real anthem? ;) The one people actually know the lyrics to.

I always find it funny when the far right voters are singing it whole hartedly.

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/portuguese-english/seio has breast as the first translation. Also, even in English, "bosom" is generally taken to be the polite way to say breast 99% of the time even if it /can/ mean the chest area. I think you're just being contrarian.

They're not contrarian, bosom can refer to breasts but that's not the only definition. I'm pretty sure it's not even the primary definition for the majority of the word's existence.

I don't really want to link a bible site but take your pick and search for the word. 50+ references and it rarely meant boobs. It meant...the area of hugging. How could a man put his hands between his tits? Cradling a child is holding it in your bosom. A baby doesn't suck milk from bosoms.

Bosom meant the chest area even if it generally only used to mean breasts nowadays.

I have never heard the word bosom refer to anything but boobs. Its like a polite term for titties.

The Battle Hymn of the Republic mentions Jesus's boobs, then.

Right, but then the joke doesn't work :/

Thailand's national anthem is smuttier, then, since it talks about holding Thai people in boobs, not just an abstract concept like liberty!

"Seio" in Portuguese means "breast" and is used to refer to boobs.

Like chicken breast?

That's not boobs. Every translation that I found had it as "bosom" in English, referring to the chest area. I mean, maybe some people have liberty in their tiddies, but that seems unusual.

I have liberty in my tits. They demand freedom!

It's used quite often to mean chest. It's a fill in for saying "breast", which is usually meaning "inside one's chest, near to their heart". There's a quote attributed to Albert Einstein though I found no source to which is "Anger dwells only in the bosom of fools", which shows this application. Shakespear also has Isabella say in Measure for Measure, act 2 scene 2 "Go to your bosom: knock ther...

Yeah it seems like it began meaning chest, became a polite way of saying boobs, and eventually the latter edged out the former. Mind you this is in English and the line in question is Portuguese so maybe arguing English semantics isn't helping us get close to the truth.

If anyone here speaks Portuguese I'd love to hear if that word has any of these implications in Portuguese.

I really do not like austropop (outside of the EAV, courtesy of my childhood), but even i know those lyrics by heart.

And yes, it is very funny - it's similar to republicans thinking Rage against the Machine became woke lol

the word "seios" nowadays is largely equivelent to "breasts" but it seems like it meant chest more generally in past

because the common use of it nowadays means "breasts", the lyrics were written over a hundred years ago, that does not mean that that was the most common usage at the time or the intended one

This verse is referring to the british, not menial laborers or chattel slaves. "Hirelings" was (is?) an insulting term to describe a mercenary, and the implication is that they are either brigands who are only in it for a pittance wage, rubes who do it because of a loyalty to the monarchy and/or impressed soldiers of the british (a practice with many parallels to chattel slavery, for what that'...

And it's important to add, one of the cassi belli for the war of 1812 was the british impressment of sailors on American vessels, including American citizens.

The US National Anthem is the only one in the whole world that mentions bombs.

USA USA USA! But for real, we started the war, yes, but we had reasonable cassus belli (embargoing our trade with france and kidnapping our seamen into the british navy) and the poem is about a defensive battle.

I still think our national anthem should be a secularized version of the battle hymn of the republic.

one of the iterations of Ukraine's national anthem lyrics from early 20th century had blood mentioned in the context of dark past history of wars and occupation and how our people persist in spite of everything. that bit wasn't in the original poem and its musical adaptation which was about glorious past and wishful bright future. then there was late 20th iteration that replaced that bit with a bloody battle going from the river San to river Don. San and Don rivers were previously mentioned as abstract furthest points of slavic people agglomeration. That version also mentions river Dnipro in a different part and calls it Granpa Dnipro.

But it's the only way that the word "blood" might be connected to the austrian anthem at all. Only the word "Heart" appears, as in "heart of Europe". They probably asked an LLM.

The translation is wrong. I don't know where that anthem comes but in french, sein means core. In its "sein" means at its core, deeply rooted

Sein also means breast in french

Norway mentiones how the Olaf Haraldson died the "martyr" death in 1030 while trying to make Norway christian. The entire second verse is about the early medieval kings.
The stanza in the second verse reads something like this:
"..On the country Olav painted the cross with his blood"
