I saw something about suction using a vacuum on the bottom. Not sure how the hell that could hold up a heavy car.

If you actually watch the demo they show the generated down force.

Chinese manufactures are making cars that literally jump over potholes.. And I think they're in production.

Whereas, Elon demos something that will never go to production, is totally useless, and is basically a falling car..

Tesla are so far behind at this point. I bet even the cheap chinese cars don't leak in their boot

People really weren't buying those though. It's a hot take, but I think they made the right choice on that one. They followed it up with the wrong choice to not develop hybrid wagons/cross overs. I don't think anyone saw the return of the minivan.

People stopped buying sedans because the car industry made a concerted effort to demarket them. They've been pushing SUVs for nearly 30 years, trying really hard to get people to stop buying sedans and were too successful. Now there's a fuel crisis and no sedans in production (from American brands at least) so the manufacturers are getting caught with their pants down again

I do wonder if the fleet market is sufficient to keep both sedans and vans in production, since each makes a very competent fleet vehicle platform for different usecases, see the venerable Crown Victoria for example

So what? Most people aren't driving a Ferrari either. Just get a normal car instead.

I have a normal car. But what if I want electric? What should I get?

I genuinely don't even know who that demonstration was for other than 12-year-olds. None of these cars have any practical or road applications. Where are you going to need to flip your cap off of a ramp or over some cars? It's so fucking stupid.

I have a coworker who was yelling in the office about how "fucking cool" it was.... I'm not putting him above a 12-year old though.

You didn't specify the model we should compare. But model y is beaten by multiple German and Chinese models like cla, glb, ix3, xpeng g6 and smart #5 just to name a few.

To add what I mean with beat is faster charging, HUD, better drive train etc.

I'm not sure. I think they were reacting to buyers, not the other way around. I remember the late 90s and early 2000s. SUVs and crossovers were relatively new and exploding in popularity. Partly as a back lash against the "soccer mom" minivan stereotype. I never liked them, but I also never liked sedans. I'm definitely a wagon guy. It's sad that they all became crossovers.

When's the last time you looked? Hyundai Ioniq 5 / 6, BMW i4, Xpeng G6 for example come to mind. Bonus: they're on an 800V platform so loading from 10% - 80% is like 14 minutes compared to ~25 minutes for a model 3

Zeekr 7X also

Crazy, but that is also not a 3/Y, probably an X, maybe an S? The trunk of the 3/Y doesn't open into the cabin. Agreed it is/would be stupid to make a car like that. But my 3 is the best car I have ever driven.

You know. I'm on crack, must be a model Y because of the door handles. And I have never messed with one because musk was off the deep end before it came out.

Yeah, Active Suspension. Unfortunately, never went to production though, apparently because of complexity I think.

The BYD is in production though

China is living in the future, and the best that Elon can do is a shitty demo that would blow you up in a car crash, and which will never be feasible to produce.

Guess which one got attention though?

Even if they don't replace a car, they're great vehicles. They're fun to ride, you rarely have to worry about traffic jams, they're cheap to operate, and you can do a lot of your own maintenance. Does yours have seats on the back? A trailer? I've seen a variety of solutions for transporting kids. The trailer is the solution I see most often, and it looks like the most luxurious option for the k...

I mean, for me they effectively replace the car. We own one, but since we have the e-bike, I don't drive at all. I use the trailer for shopping if needed.
And yes, we used the trailer + the small seat behind my seat. Basically all three kids could ride with me, but the battery depletes fast and I am not sure about the general strain put on the bike's structure with so much weight. The bike is not technically ours but leased from the company my wife works at. In Belgium, at some point the taxes get so high that people choose untaxed benefits at work (like a bike leasing or vouchers, even a company car) instead of salary hikes.
We now own a second e-bike with two separate seats so we can have family trips. We'll see how it works.
To clarify: I do NOT believe that you can always replace a car with an e-bike. But in the rather wealthy area where we live, the bike infrastructure is great and everything is very walkable, so it is possible to greatly reduce your reliance on cars. The Netherlands are far superior to Belgium in this respect.

I quite appreciate the visceral dislike that people have for Tesla. Given that we see their products directly in our everyday lives, I certainly don't blame people for reacting this way, and I'm happy to encourage this sort of scrutiny, especially over the longer term. I sometimes think, though, that the zeitgeist is missing some of the deeper damage that Musk's enterprises are inflicting. I do...

We are so upset about specific evil things that Musk or his companies do that we miss to be upset about all their other failings. Well said. His whole empire should collapse, and if that means that "we" can only launch 100x per year instead if 1000 times, that's a price we can very well pay.

It was an impressive tech demo. You know that every idiot who saw this thinks to himself how awesome he would look, jumping over the car in front of him. The ultimate road rage power fantasy. Love the meme.

It's kinda funny how child-like Elon is. That's a fantasy literally everyone stuck in traffic has had. He is good at grabbing people's attention with stunts like this (or maybe someone he surrounds himself with and just takes the credit for). I don't think it's enough anymore ever since the DOGE stuff. I personally would never willingly spend a single penny that I thought would end up in his pocket.

It'd be nice to see tsla valued properly. I'd also like to see a European competitor to starlink.

Tanking starlink is a bit of a head scratcher. Cutting off access with that timing seems really boneheaded and short sighted. It had a real chance to be a super surveillance internet 2.0 with constant expensive upkeep.

Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, Polestar, Porsche all have EVs that match or even beat Tesla's offering outside of Full Self Driving and sentry mode. I recently saw a youtube video of a Chinese EV that navigated Amsterdam on it's own. https://youtu.be/egs_P0bO2AE So yeah Tesla won't have the monopoly on full self driving for long.

The lack of real buttons is hardly the problem with those vehicles. Maybe for some/many people but I find that argument excessively nit-picky. You can adjust temperature perfectly fine in a Tesla without looking. Not that I normally need to touch it at all.

Yes, I would like them to go out of business too. It would also be great to destroy the regulatory capture that blocks much better cars from USA.

That argument carries enough weight that EURONCAP safety rating requires physical buttons for key features:

"Under the Safe Driving section of Euro NCAP’s safety rating, the key driving controls – indicators, windscreen wipers and washer, hazard warning lights, horn and eCall emergency button – should be operated by a direct physical input rather than hidden within a menu on a touchscreen. "

https://www.euroncap.com/press-media/buttons-are-back-for-basic-functions-euro-ncap-confirms-in-testing/

The "it doesn't effect me" crowd is of the same kind that says, that controlling a phone during driving, doesn't effect them or that they can drive just as safe after non-excessive alcohol consumption.

Yes, pretty insane. It shows how the stock exchange has completely lost contact with reality. At a time where Tesla has lost its leadership position in its market, has only two aging cash cow models on the market, is in the process of losing the most important global EV market to domestic competition and has no credible other big business model, the stock is rising to heights as high as many of its competitors combined with a lot higher sales, revenues and profits (combined). It is all based on flowery promises of the future.

This can go on for quite a while longer but eventually reality always wins.

I bought my Tesla in 2022. After 4 years with it, the lack of real buttons and burying controls under touchscreen menus is the primary reason why I’ll never buy another Tesla. When I do replace my Tesla it will be with another EV, but not a Tesla EV.

It seems Chinese vendours are almost as bad as Tesla in this regard. However, European (maybe also South Koreans, I don't know) largely coming back to physical controls for key features (and also real haptic buttons, not cheapo-touch buttons) though.

And the boot doesn't leak.

I've been looking at EVs, and at least here in Australia, I can't see any legit reasons to pick a Tesla over byd at the moment

My biggest issue though with both is that neither offer a ev designed for 4wd /rough terrain yet (which is why I'm looking trailseeker).

However, it's more likely byd will get there first.

And yeah, I'm not waiting for this stupid once off flying car thing as an alternative. It was never intended to be production and would never work in a production car (it's like elons "hyperloop", yet another overpromise underdeliver)

Depends on what you mean by rough terrain. My country has a lot of unpaved roads and it works on them just fine but I wouldn't go off-roading it it. It is also pretty much always sunny and doesn't rain a lot here so the dirt roads stay in ok condition.

I was told for the sealion 7 that the batteries are mounted at the bottom and they've had people with punctured batteries. I've heard the same thing for Tesla too.

Byd will likely have cars suitable for those environments long before Tesla though.

To me, the flying car was really a vote against looking at Tesla and reminds me of all the other overpromising Elon has done anyway, especially when byd has a working jumping car already

Yeah, although I don't know about puncturing the battery so much as destroying the rest of the stuff under there. The battery is armored and isn't supposed to catch fire because of its chemistry. I drive it on paved roads and really compacted dirt roads but definitely avoid potholes and sand. The Atto 3 has higher clearance but it wasn't available when I bought my car and is still RWD now AWD which is a bummer.
