I need ten frying pan handles, so you must keep hunting frying pans down in the Skillet Sepulchre until you've got ten handles. Frying pans only have a 10% chance of dropping handles as loot. Frying pans have a five minute respawn timer. There will be a dozen other players trying to complete this quest.

Khajit has wares, if you have coin.

Side quest: go grind from 9:00 to 6:00 pm, 5 days a week (minimum), till you get enough coins.

I seriously need editable TODO tasks and calendar running on the desktop wtih CalDAV support and reminders (Linux, wayland). Maybe something like that exists, but I haven't found it yet. I will probably have to make it myself when I find the time.

Still a work in progress, but a friend of mine is building exactly that: https://git.circuitforge.tech/eva/focus-flow

Bookkeeping software. You scan your receipts. You scan any other important documents it compiles everything needed so you can do your taxes. And get the best tax write offs.

Working on it soon:
https://git.circuitforge.tech/Circuit-Forge/crossbill
https://circuitforge.tech/software/crossbill

The shared core and application framework is solid, but I have been focusing on Peregrine mostly as I'm trying to help my partner find a job. If I had some more beta testers, I would be able to start on more of the apps I have planned:

A robust, comprehensive, granular, libre-content search-engine. Search on keyword lists with standard shortcuts. eg. Search: "dnb" Can set licence to only show: PD, CC-by, CC-by-nc-sa, AGPL, GPL3, etc. or multiples of these. Can select filetype categories for results: text, images, audio, video, software, etc. Has all the major repos of libre-content indexed, and can pick up licencing detail fr...

Work in progress, but I'm building something like this:
https://circuitforge.tech/software/pagepiper

The features you're describing would be fairly easy to add to what's already there

As a physical therapist, one thing that bugs me (and I know it’s not a software limitation but spending choices) is having to wedge my notes into a format designed for a physician or something else.

I got a small taste of that back in nursing school. Our care plans followed a very strict template for our clinical patients, and they were 100% geared toward med surg. My day in the OR made for an especially hard time trying to check all the boxes... I remember a whole lot of "yeah I didn't assess for that, cuz pt was getting surgery... but, uh, here's what I'd be looking for if I did! ...uh, nope, no interventions, due to the patient still getting surgery, but here's a few things I could have done if they weren't being actively cut open"

Fortunately the profs were well aware of that dillemma, so they graded pretty soft on OR days lol. So, you've definitely got my empathy on this one - dealing with that garbage every day sounds like a nightmare!

...this is probably the core issue of why so many different departments end up using a completely different software package.

In what way? Linux might be a bit hacked together and monolithic, but I don't know about fucked. Some hardware is shitty and locked down, but probably still not the majority.

I say GUI metaphor should happen in hardware. Without the same old fixed frames-per-second, we don't use CRT anymore.

It's all but brittle sandcastles we build on hardware made for number-crunching in servers, same like a web-GUI is inferior because it runs on a Document Object Model. Just leads to more bugs and security issues. That we still need to decide between immediate and retained mode rendering, why is that a software question?

Or (GUI) icon painting, that should at least be a kernel call, not something you as a dev have to fiddle around with sizes and alignment on.

Yesyes, i know, backwards-compatibility and market share.

most of the issues with our charting software boils down to dumb shit like that - proprietary systems that are incapable of communicating, or just good ol’ fashioned garbage design This is everywhere. I deleted a more thought out response when I realized that someone probably handed over ALL of the backend databases of patient data to an LLM (it's HIPAA compliant so don't worry *wink*) so that ...

HIPAA is the opposite of privacy anyway - it's specifically about enabling sharing of data 🤦🏼.

And it was sold as a privacy tool. Lying cocksuckers.

Nurse here. The software we chart with (that I've used at least - plenty out there I haven't touched) ranges from meh to absolute shit. Some of the features on my wishlist would be elimination of redundant charting (like, if put the date down in one section, don't fuckin ask in 3 others!), a way to save templates without patient-specific data, so when I do the same procedure on 5 different peop...

Oi,I feel you so hard on this, as a software developer who works on medical devices and software used in medical contexts, holy shit the pickings are so bad.

Why can't someone just conjure up solutions to all of this (which is totally doable technically)? Because FDA regulation forces us to follow Byzantine release processes and meet very exacting requirements for the software end product.

I could probably knock together at least two or three of your wishlist items in a week, and it would take 1-3 years for it to make it to the first customer. Even patches and fixes I build for existing products take 3-6 months to make it out the door after they're done.

All of that to say, these make friction points that make it difficult for developers to coordinate and standardize without introducing mountains of extra bullshit that didn't need to actually be in the product or software in the first place

Accurate search engine that strips ai generated articles from search results. Accurate product search engine, that finds what I am looking for instead of ads, and includes searching by what the product is made of, it's shape etc. Last time I was trying to find no glue no glass non-welded no plastic tea infuser it took me far too long.

Working on the second: https://menagerie.circuitforge.tech/snipe

Still early days but the filters and trust scoring work really well

A task / to do organizer that: intelligently populates a "do today" list while handling dependancies and scheduling is editable and viewable by multiple people, has individual tasks for each user, and also pulls from a list of shared tasks keeps a record of when and by who previous tasks were completed is capable of but does not require integration with calendar, fitness tracker, and messaging

Buddy of mine is working on something like this: https://git.circuitforge.tech/eva/focus-flow

An easy one I would do myself if I had more time. A calorie tracker that does not try to get you into a cult.

  • The only time it accesses the internet is to update its on-board database.
  • None of your data gets sent anywhere unless you choose to share it (for things like new foods).
  • No suggestions.
  • No exercise programs or tracking
  • No sleep tracking.
  • Tracks only what you want. Extras available through add-ons or something, but I don't care about tracking nutrients, fat, carbs, etc. so keep them out of my way.
  • In short, follow the Unix guideline of an app doing one thing and doing it well.

A program that uses modern language processing to let you play old or new text-based games without the annoyance of their clunky interface. Especially if it also worked with voice so you could play it as you do other menial tasks.

NOTE it would have to use minimal compute. No using Claude to do it all. Just focused AI in the language processing.

I just want something that'll chop the sponsored segment out of my podcasts. Can't be that hard. Every sponsor segment starts and ends with a standard jingle, so just have the software look for that opening and closing jingle and cut out whatever's in between, right?

Honestly considering vibe coding it because ads are the reason I don't listen to my podcasts anymore

I work for a division of a health tech company and I can say that we hear you and value this kind of feedback. There are folks I work with who have dedicated themselves (including myself) to seek solutions to problems like these, and as a former integrations engineer, some companies are better at interoperability than others, despite the efforts of the HITECH Act in the US. My frustration is time and getting the attention of those who greenlight projects to work on things like these.
On one hand, I feel OSS could help solve these problems sooner, but on the other hand, healthcare has some very opinionated people and things could get messy.

Community driven search engine. Where everyone can upvote/downvote/tag or even comment on page or service, to filter out garbage services and help increase visibility of valuable sites. That would probably require being logged in and verified as a real, unique person, otherwise bots would make it garbage really fast.

In a way, I think the early AOL had this idea.

Scenario: I am sitting on the sofa and I type, I want to go to the dentist / cinema / vacation; and fully automatically the entire exercise (ticket, appointment, billing, payment, seatreservations, return trip etc etc) is planned, all I need to do is wait for the calendar reminder. And all of that is naturally fully protected by sound data privacy.

I know it's a very unpopular opinion around here, but this was pretty much the dream and why agents were built. The problem is their inefficiency and training mechanics. However, I read about A2A as a way to achieve this through a demo, where your local machine talks with airlines and hotels to find out availability, asks you questions on preferences, and tries to find a solution. Some existing vacation planners already do this, but I know your ask is in general, and I think that was the plan for engineers. I'm sure they were steered in other directions though.
Things like this could be done without AI, though, but standardization is required and to achieve that we have to deal with a very human problem: cooperative agreement. It's rare when people agree so completely on a standard, which is why some of the most basic things the Internet is based on takes forever before finally becoming a standard. Sometimes it takes just one method/format to become the standard based on popularity, but for tools to work together, it requires multiple parties to agree and then others to want to join in and adopt it. The unfortunate part is that as things expand, needs change and things get messy really quick.

What you're looking for is called "touching grass". Go outside and interact with real people.

Not sure about you, but recently, a lot more of those online behaviors have started appearing IRL.

That means that people already did these things, but, like alcohol, the Internet lowers the inhibitions to not behave like that. It's a pretty short leap to say that, if you spend a lot of time online, these behaviors will become a large part of who you are on and off the Internet.

Does it mean that people can't relearn how not to act like that? No, but it's gonna be hard.

I had Google Glass when it came out. It was essentially this, but the tech at the time was still too bulky and voice and other things that would've made it better were not quite ready yet. A little too ahead of its time, but the idea was there. In fact, since then, I've seen attempts to do what you're asking, and we're getting closer. The problems now are the cameras & microphones and privacy, and bulkiness of the devices.

I’ve thought about that too. Then I feel guilty cutting out their revenue source. Then I realize that doesn’t matter. Then I realize that it’ll require also wrapping it in a whole-ass podcast app. But there could probably be a way to download episodes, run them through the ad filter, then host an rss feed of that list of files… that’s it, I’ll do it.

I don't really see how that justifies Orwellian censorship online.

My interpretation on what you've said is just that you don't want to be confronted with the realities of socializing with people who aren't willing to lie to you about their opinions. It used to be normalized that dishonesty and inauthenticity were "politeness" and making yourself palatable to others was productive. But, as we can plainly see world-wide, putting up with assholes just encourages them to be bigger assholes.

Perhaps rather than thinking the rest of the world is wrong for reacting to you in a way you dislike, you might consider whether there's a common denominator here. Rather than trying to control everyone else, you might want to think about what you can control that's a little closer to home.

I've been messing around with decision models, I feel like they would be a pretty good fit for that because the only thing that would need to be done is choosing one of a finite set of commands and choosing its parameters also from a finite set of choices, which is what decision models are for, along with being very fast and having low system requirements.

Automating it would be rad, but if I could even just plug the episodes I have into such a software and de-sponsor them in batches I'd be happy. I was caught up with Hey Riddle Riddle right up until their ads stopped being a set length. Now I gotta skip forward and backward until I find the end of the ad, and I simply stopped listening.

Real talk I'm surprised some tech bro hasn't made that yet. Like not hiding it, just fully branding it as an AI-first replacement for Reddit/Twitter.

The user could describe the type of content they want to see or "world event" they want their "community" to experience. Like a medival twitter, and have a political plot develop between two kingdoms and the human user's engagement on the thread can help sway public opinion on the subject leading to different narrative events.

With a world of 8 billion people, there are enough out there that would enjoy it...

No, it's plausible

The unrealistic part is expecting the company (who has access to whatever information you use for your HUD stats) not to take greedy advantage of every tiny detail of your life to fill your HUD with ads and probably other nefarious shit

And for the HUD to not be AI-powered, since they'd also be too lazy to put real programming into it

I'd love an online-free version of that though. Huge one-time purchase, software runs entirely within hardware. That's the dream
