That and imagine the political power they suddenly have if they do start to turn out at 85% while whites are still sitting at 55%. Georgia is 33% black, 57% white. Georgia's population is 11.3 million, 77.8% 18 and older is 8.79m. At the rates in that chart that would be 1.07m black voters, 2.5m white. 85% black turnout would put them at 2.47m votes.

Maybe this year will be the year to turn out. I hope.

Did you also ask them if they joined epsteins army for "muh freedums" or a paycheck? At what point did you realise you were killing innocent brown school kids overseas so your pigs at home could kill black babies in mississippi?

Played on computers, didn't kill anyone, and I'm a woman and was sexually discriminated out by hegseths army of misogynists.... so, no and I'm not there anymore.

You know I'm a real person right? I just dont get why there's a reason to treat someone like this.

If it was a white baby it'd be a different story, But, if it was a white shoplifter, it wouldn't have resulted in gunfire in the first place

At first I thought the article said the shoplifting suspect was white, but it turns out the officer under investigation is white.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks it's even worse to shoot a baby.

With all due respect, I think you're hung up on the wrong thing, and I hope you're not trying to imply that I'm trying to downplay the seriousness of the issue by saying it's a toddler. It doesn't matter of it's a baby or a toddler. One innocent child getting shot is far too many.

I blame the liberal gun laws. Because everyone potentially could be armed police officers constantly feel life threatened.

I wasn't making a statement one way or another. I was just curious as to how true or false that was. I'd say you're in the realm of reasonable. 38% turnout is pretty pathetic. So is 55%. If we're not pushing 85% or more, something is wrong.

Do you know why we’re not pushing that percentage? People need to work. Sometimes two jobs, especially somewhere like Mississippi where the minimum wage is still $7.25. People can’t take a day off. Last time I voted in Mississippi, I was in line for 2 hours, and that was at like 11am because I was lucky to have a desk job that let me work from home and understood the importance of voting. Minimum wage jobs do not get that.

So glad I live in Washington state now where everyone gets their ballot mailed to them 2 weeks in advance. For general elections, we’re about 70-80% turnout.

Death penalty for thieving? Damn, America went full Stalin

One of my great grandfathers was a gulag survivor.

Up until 2010, he used to hold presentations on why the communist regime of Hungary was bad. His biggest issue was the secret police and arrest quotas, both of which caused him being tortured until he confessed crimes he didn't commit during 1956.

After Fidesz won, he was no longer let to speak up, because they wanted women sobbing about "having to wear ugly eastern clothes instead of beautiful western brands", not to mention that they didn't really had issues with secret polices or arrest quotas. If I recall, they even banned the word "arrest quota", as Fidesz is a proxy of the American Republican Party.

Not just shoplifting but literally stole a pack of diapers. People don't steal diapers for fun, that's obviously someone who was out of options, and took the only option left to her

Edit to add: apparently she didn't even steal the diapers! Some customer said they thought she did and she didn't have the receipt (because who grabs the receipt when they go and buy a single consumable item?)

had stolen a pack of diapers. The women exited the store with the child as officers arrived, entered their vehicle and began to leave the parking lot. Officers drew their weapons, and Vellesiya Wiley lifted her son up to show the officers that a child was in the car. One officer fired into the vehicle, killing the baby as she held him.

stealing diapers or bread, should be a lesser crime, than stealing jewelry or clothing. Neither should justify shooting when running/driving away. If they put their hands up holding a baby, they are unlikely driving super fast, and may in fact doing step 1 of surrendering.

Even if a diaper thief were to use a hostage as human shield, shooting is only legally justified in Israel, where hannibal directive extended to civilians is part of their non-negotiation hatred towards the "palestinian problem", and where Mississippi has and may still view violent oppression as the preferred "solution" to their racial tensions.

Shops are also insured so it doesn't even affect the owner. Some super rich insurance company gets to pay for a new pack of diapers.

Compare this with what's going on in France, where thousands of immigrants are rioting and burning down stores and cars. Millions of dollars in damage. The police there still just use tear gas and rubber bullets and haven't killed anyone.

America is in its own league of police brutality.

That's no excuse.

Soldiers being sent into literal combat against enemy troops have rules of engagement that don't allow them to fire unless fired upon. Why do police dealing with civilians have less-strict rules of engagement?

We haven't seen the body warn yet, but the issue is why is shooting at her automatically justified in this context? Driving at officers or not. Why did officers put themselves in the position to be driven at, why not just tail her and pull her over, why not get her registration and go to her address. There are far more alternative options than (as seems to the standard) going for maximum force first.

why is shooting at her automatically justified

The cop saw her holding up a baby. He was shooting at the baby.

Presumably this was justifiable self defense because the baby was the reason the mother needed diapers and if she hadn't needed diapers the cop would not be fearing for his life at that moment

Not to mention other countries also having crime, and criminals with guns. They don't use their weapons against people who are not a danger to anyone.

The mentality in America is difficult to understand from the outside. It's very evil.

Any kind of stealing. I don't care if they stole a diamond or the Mona Lisa, that doesn't deserve the death penalty, much less an extrajudicial killing.

I really wish I was surprised instead of just angry. But no, of fucking course a white AG in Mississippi sees nothing wrong with the extrajudicial police murder of a black infant over the theft of diapers. ACAB remains true, and I don't care if the cop believes they're in danger, they clearly have no idea what actual danger looks like, and they get paid putting everyone else in danger.

I think preventing police from killing your children justifies missing two hours of work. Especially if it would cause a grand total of $14.50 gross income loss. Or fight to have elections on Sundays, like 80%+ of democracies do.

Folks like to pretend Mississippi is the exemption. The bitter truth is that they're just more naked in their cruelty.

We're seeing Italy and France dissolve into police riots and neoliberal poverty just on the other side of the pond. We saw the same in Baltimore and St. Louis not that long ago.

I have got to say that I am in fact surprised. What kind of shithole country approves the use of lethal force in situations where violence can be avoided? As a European I can't read this and say "well it's probably just one of the shitty states." I'm sorry but I wouldn't feel safe in any corner of a country where this is allowed.

I can't imagine moving to a country that just shrugs off the killing of a person because they were potentially trying to flee a crime scene. The fact that the person was a baby and that the crime was stealing one pack of diapers doesn't make this any better or worse, but I suppose that it does reveal just how bizarre and deranged the people who rule this country are.

This world is ripe for an uprising against the ruling class and their bootlickers. The problem is getting everyone to agree on what they want.

I just have a constant pit in my stomach, knowing every day the constant thoughts in my mind egging me into impulsive action may one day lead me to do something that in the end will just be used as "moral" fodder against neighbors and people I care about.

But truly, when is enough, enough?

The only possible reason to shoot a thief imo is if they perhaps stole firearms or explosives, as one could reason they are stealing them imwkth I tent to cause great harm. But fucking diapers? Hell a car? It's just stuff 🫪 not to mention these stores all have theft insurance anyways!! Or it's been accounted for (see inventory "shrink")

There was well more uproar over those two white people than there was over all the POC ice killed before and after them. There was well more uproar than there will be for this baby.

We're not anywhere near "killing a white baby as the mother holds it aloft" levels in America.

Just a heads up, that's not another term for Baby Boomer and has never been associated with them. The Greatest Generation were born between 1901 and 1927. Boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. And there's an entire generation, appropriately called the Silent Generation, separating them.
