Donald Trump joked with rally-goers on Thursday evening that he had “the right to run again”

His allies have dismissed the president’s claims as a joke.

We know where you stand guardian, didn't need to tell on yourself that directly.

"But what if it means two in a row!?!?!!?"

That's a literal claim from some Republicans.

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Section 2. This Article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several states within seven years from the date of its submission to the states by the Congress.[3]

No no it has to be the first term, interrupted, then second, then third. The reason? Because they need to exclude Obama from running again.

Those are the exact words of the 22nd amendment. It's explicit. There's no ambiguity or room for other interpretations. Trump was elected twice, he's hit his limit, that's it.

There is wiggle room in some amendments but this one seems pretty fucking clear.

So it sounds like there's no prohibition against running, just against winning? Sounds like an easy win for the Dems.

Unless those rumors are true and they did manage to game enough voting machines to clinch the election. In which case he was not actually elected twice…

Though law no longer matters and he will anyway, if he doesn’t die before then, which I think he will since his dementia is so advanced. But whatever.

Like I mean burning down federal buildings and police stations, storming the homegrown concentration camps to free the prisoners, a literal million+ person march on Washington DC right to the front door of the White House.

Right?! Are we fucking crazy? Please god, do it. Run. After the first term people crawled out of caves to vote against him. This midterm you have Texas districts turning out voting numbers that almost match the general election.

Yeah, fucking run a 3rd time under the least popular campaign in history with 70% of the populace hating you. The last time at least 2 people tried to kill him.

I fucking dare him. I double dare him!

It seems pointless to run in an election you are constitutionally barred from winning. But, Trump has proven time and time again he will do pointless things. If he tried running again and somehow he won, however, the constitution is clear: it's a no go. He can't get elected for a third time. That said, I don't think that's necessarily the point. I think the point is to create chaos and crisis. Hopefully he's not around to run in 2028 so it becomes a moot.

Term limits are trivial to bypass. Same with limitations based on age or the born citizen requirement.

Authoritarians figured this out ages ago. You just get a patsy to run instead. Consider the example of Lurleen Wallace. Her husband, arch-segregationist George Wallace, was term limited per the Alabama constitution. So she ran instead, openly announcing her intention to simply serve as a figurehead. Wallace effectively got another term. She technically was the governor during her term, but George held all the real power. Putin did something similar to get around Russia's term limits.

Sure, if you do this, you have to worry about your figurehead betraying you and seizing real power for themselves, but this is pretty easy to address. You select someone for the patsy role who has absolutely no political power, charisma, or likeability of their own. Someone who could never possibly win an election on their own. Someone from your own patronage network that will remain completely dependent on you.

Imagine if they run someone like Jared Kushner. He is completely and utterly dependent on Trump for his future and livelihood. He has no real political base of his own. Nobody is out there clamoring for President Kushner. If he ran on his own, he wouldn't make it past the first week of the primary. But if he ran as a figurehead? Openly saying, "I'm just here to sit in the chair. I'll do whatever Donald wants. My job is to hold the pen and sign what I'm told to sign. I'm willing to do this because I trust Donald's judgment." He could actually have a shot that way. At least Trump's base would go for it. And Trump would have him completely under his control. Again, Kushner's political and financing fortunes are entirely dependent on staying in Donald's good graces. Kushner could in theory get elected and tell Trump, "get the hell out of my office, I'm president now," but that simply wouldn't be practically possible.

To be a Republican is to be a grifter/conman/shitstain. Cheating is always on the table.

I know it's hard to plan for all eventualities, but I really wish the founding fathers had covered things in a little more detail.

The founding fathers didn’t come up with the 22nd amendment, that was done in the late 40’s after FDR was elected four times in a row. The founding fathers intentionally left that one open, I think

Yes, it was intentional. They wanted the Constitution to be revised and expanded as necessary, rather than being bad law set in stone. They were well aware they couldn't foresee the many issues that would come up, especially over time. That's why the Constitution is often described as a "framework" for the US's "laboratories of democracy".

The one weasel notion that I wonder about, what if he was elected VP and the president stepped down directly after? Then he wasn't elected a 3rd time but placed by successions. It wouldn't surprise me to see them try some such fuckary.

I don’t remember the exact wording, but basically to be eligible to be VP one must meet the eligibility requirements for being President. So he’s not eligible to be VP either.

But I recall someone claiming that no such eligibility requirement exists for Speaker of the House, who is in the succession line after the VP.

the legal hippthesis hypothesis is for the house to vote him in as speaker of the house and then the figurehead president and VP resign.

Like the riots when an insurrectionist was allowed to run for a second term after being ruled ineligible by a State?

But the Roberts Court, dontchaknow, intervened and went directly against the Constitution and made a BLATANTLY unconstitutional ruling that should have invalidated literally all of their appointments.

Trump was ineligible for the second term, whether or not the Roberts Court wanted to acknowledge it.

And hell will freeze over before I give those judges on the Roberts Court the dignity of referring to them with the words that other people call them or that court.
