Hetero people who don't believe in marriage and/or don't like husband/wife titles sometimes use titles like partner too because girlfriend/boyfriend doesn't sound serious enough I guess. Common amongst my social circle but I get why it's usually a dog whistle.

Also literally everyone in Europe

When someone professes their love for reading, they’re insinuating that those who do not read are necessarily below them on the cognitive ladder. At least that’s how my disdainful mind works.

Just came across a profile of someone claiming to be a "veracious reader." Fun fact, veracious is actually a word. I'm guessing it's not what they meant, though.

Took me a minute to realise what "dog whistle" meant and it made me think about how on Ted Lasso, Roy just yells "whistle" as opposed to blowing one. "Family values" can mean anything from hating gays, hating women who aren't rushing to squeeze out kids, basically anything that goes against the productive/nuclear family, to them — to the rest of us it's just that people should have a choice. I ...

I don't see a lot of Americans talking up their Second Amendment anymore? I guess because they all sat back and let fascists take over, they can't really say their guns are defending them against tyranny.

Oh no they definitely still do. They think that since their side is in power, they don’t need their armory right now, but those evil wokes are always trying to get them!

I'll contribute. I refer to my wife as my "partner". People on the left just continue conversation no problem. People on the right pause and you can see the wheels turning. I'm a white not very masculine male.

“No, don’t worry, Mr. Conservative. I’m male, she’s female, your norms aren’t being broken yet.”
“…Yeh, but partner implies she’s your equal. That don’t sit right.”

The first time a friend referred to me wife as my "partner", I questioned his choice of words because he was well aware that I'm not gay. Like, I would still just carry on in convo, but if I hear "partner", I make a mental note that they're gay. The correlation has close to a 100% hit rate.

You know what's funny about that? A lot of my hetero friends also say partner.

I started using it because it removes the baggage that gendered terms carry. My wife is my best friend. I like to do everything with her. We split chores pretty evenly.

I can think of some sex ones I've heard of. A "snow white" is some kind of deranged sex thing for a girl i can't remember... It is probably really bad though. Also one place i was had furries who hung different color flags on their belt, it was pretty subtle but apparently it was a signal about what kind of sex things they were into. Someone told me that. Also I've heard that long ago in hawai'...

The flag thing comes from the gay community, back when it was a more underground experience.

"partner" sounds like you're lawyers. just make up a word, or take one from another language. we use "sambo".

It doesn't work quite as well in English

one shibboleth i noticed is that any mention of "race" strongly indicates that the person speaking is American, especially if it's conflated with nationalities. "I'm [number]% [nationality]", any use of "mixed race", and stuff like "I can drink a lot of beer because I'm German" or "this recipe offends me as an Italian" are dead giveaways (and quite racist in my humble opinion)

After the big protests in France there were a million bots posting racist stuff on Reddit. They kept referring to "liberals" but none speaks like that in France. Liberal is the word you'd use to describe corpo-centrists like Macron, never to describe leftists.

It was kind of like the 3 fingers meme from inglorious bastards.

I'm a self proclaimed crazy cat lady. I also work in a field that has a lot of interaction with the police. I used to have a pin attached to my work badge that said "All Cats Are Beautiful". What? I just love cats ;)

Now I'm thinking about making badges that say "Assigned Child At Birth".

I think it's because immigrants wanted to preserve their culture when they came to the US, and that got passed down but was diluted over the generations, so you have people who have a very specific pride and identity that has deviated from the original.

Oh, unintentionally ironic is what I meant, with the misspelling in the self-description of a heavy reader. You're right, much too subtle to be likely intentional.

Its not so much a dog whistle but in Quebec whether you say "sovreignist" or "seperatist" indicates your camp.

Like Caesar or Kaisar in Fallout New Vegas.

Online, at least, I've probably heard more hetero people than gay people use "partner." In some cases they were in fact perfectly conventionally full-blown married, they just weren't interested in sharing any more details than they had to to tell whatever story they were telling, because that detail wasn't important for the story.

Neil Peart and Keith Moon come to you in a dream. Your astral body will be tested far beyond the drumming limits of your corporeal body. Upon success, you will ascend to the next level of existence. It is better that you do not know what happens when you fail.

Well, not like "I hate Americans" but moreso like "I dislike the country that is the US, I dislike it's influence and how it uses it's power". I am a francophone, and it's why I use the term, the one time I was in the US the people seemed very nice.

In many cases the "original" deviated even more. It's not like culture has been static in Europe for four hundred years.

My favorite dog whistle (that went over my head, because I was not the audience for it) was the Subaru "Come out and play" commercial.

If I remember it correctly, the ad was mostly footage of Subaru SUVs driving over rocks and through streams while a voice over talks about the cars' off-road capabilities. The ads would always end with the narrator saying "Subaru invites you to come out and play.”

As a straight man, I always assumed that the commercial was about how much fun it is to drive a Subaru up a mountain. Apparently, I was missing the point. The nature footage was all a distraction to pacify the straights. The real commercial was just the sentence fragment "Subaru invites you to come out". It was meant to say that Subaru supports queer people. It was a resounding success in promoting the 'Subaru driving lesbian' stereotype.

It's in french. You don't have a preferred demonym in french. It's like how the Dutch call themselves Netherlanders, but very few people say that. (Or how in french they're called Hollandais)

Also how is it disrespectful???
