Here is my notes from using Lemmy:
I feel there needs to be disclaimer on Lemmy servers/introduction page to warn people about negativity on the platform, but I don't think it will ever happen. About moderation, I feel the only outcome that will happen is bad moderation (IMO) will keep happening on the platform till either the servers hosting communities go down or till the mod become inactive. On a side note it feels like a lot of Lemmy servers are suffering financially and might close soon, while Lemmy developers did not even try to help them by implementing third party upload functionality(Imgbb, catbox, imgur,...etc) in the app and the web front end to lighten the load on the server admins. Right now most Lemmy servers I know of are protected by Cloudflare and pictures uploaded on some servers don't open natively(you need to click it as a normal link and pass cloudflare verification to see image). It's what it's here. but I just wanted to lay out what I think about Lemmy culture, moderation and software. Edit: More proof for my point:

I can just paste an image or whatever directly into a comment field and it's automatically uploaded and linked. For new posts, it's drag-and-drop right onto the browser. This might be instance-specific, but what functionality were you hoping for? |

I agree like 70% but it extremly depends on where on Lemmy you are. E: And I partly definitely disagree:
Never had such problems. I can find all the communities I want to find. Most communities I can't find are on instances defederated by my instance for really good reasons. Media upload speed? Depends on your internet I guess. And types of media... Yeah video-upload would be neat (even tough I don't really need it), but Reddit had the same problem last time I used it and catbox.moe etc. aren't that bad of alternatives. Also Lemmy is young, video-upload might be possible at some point, surely no problem which "cannot be fixed even on the long term".
... Just write them a DM? The few times I had to contact a mod this was the easy way to go.
It's the internet. There are people who are really into stuff, so what? It's like Reddit on speed.
You do can upload media via catbox & Co. And I for my part can see most of the media, at least when I couldn't it was due to the media being deleted. There might have been some cases of federation issues or stuff, but they really are seldom. |

no ability to upload media with the same ease and speed of Reddit I can just paste an image or whatever directly into a comment field and it's automatically uploaded and linked. The current limitations:
It might seem like minor problems, but it still causes a friction, compared to uploading to Reddit. |

The current limitations: You can't keep it in uncompressed format(like PNG for example); You can't upload big pictures; Depending on the server it might take moderate to large amount of time to upload pictures; You can't upload videos and GIFs. It might seem like minor problems, but it still causes a friction, compared to uploading to Reddit.
So go back to reddit? |

These are mostly issues created by the fact that lemmy is run via self-hosting on limited hardware, rather than being run by a company with a $2 billion in annual revenue. Personally I think it's a small price to pay to not be on Reddit. |

Lemmy Federate is designed to overcome this limitation through automated community federation.
This depends on the frontend or app you choose to use. Most Lemmy apps support in-app media uploads.
Herd mentality is just as much of a problem of Reddit; there's just more users there, so more 'herds' are able to form.
Grouping all Lemmy users together falsely assumes they all share the same opinions and blocking preferences. In any case, instances attract users by tailored moderation practices; users should join the instance that best matches their preferences. While some viewpoints—such as those promoting fascism, transphobia, or racism—are generally unwelcome across major instances, a certain baseline is needed in civilized society to have discussions in which no one is excluded on the basis of who they are.
A very broad generalization about a wide array of moderators and rules across communities, but if you don't like the way a community or instance is run, just block it and move on. I gladly block all of lemmy.ml and my All feed is better for it.
What gives that impression? While donating towards server costs is important, and a handful of notable instances such as lemm.ee have closed, most instances seem to be doing fine.
Have you tried alternative frontends and/or apps? The default Lemmy frontend is known to be simplistic in comparison and should be considered more of a reference implementation than anything. Ultimately, the Threadiverse is still relatively small and will hopefully continue to improve as Lemmy, Piefed, and Mbin are developed further. All of the core features of Reddit are present, without the commercialization that has left it degraded. |

All the memes I upload are .png-files and I never had that issue. Big pictures depends on your instance, it's up to the admins to set a limit. |

Most of those sounds like limitations of your home instance. PieFed has no problem handling PNGs and upload size / time would depend on the instance settings (and hosting I suppose). You're right about the last one though, video upload support could be a lot better, but I don't think GIFs should be an issue (unless they're massive) |

When called out on this, OP made the following thread mischaracterizing artist signatures in images as advertising and trying to get a rule made on the comics community to force all users to remove attribution. https://lemmus.org/post/21226925 In the comments they state that they refuse to consistently link the source, even though they are able to, until the rule they suggested is put into place: https://lemmus.org/comment/17161116 Notably, this all exploded after that community's mod suggested a "no bots" rule and created a "two posts per user per day" rule that OP is blatantly violating. OP is upset that they don't get to use other peoples spaces for free exactly as they want to. They have a post in powertrippingbastards recently that amounts to this as well. Now they're just continuing the tantrum elsewhere because they didn't get the response they wanted. Beep, a suggestion: Make the space you want to see on lemmy. Create a comm and set the rules you want on it. You want all posts to have what you consider advertising stripped out? Go for it. "NonAdComics", "BeepsMemes", etc. The fediverse is still small enough to carve out your own space. |

Lemmy Admins and moderators seem to have a control fetish have you considered the reason for this may be your posts and takes are just shit?
He did lead off with he enjoyed Reddit. The Lemmy corner of the fediverse is a very different culture than today’s Reddit (although I think it feels just like 2012 Reddit). If a new users were to be outside these norms on Lemmy (such as a AI slop enjoyer or Windows 11 user) then it would probably feel hostile. I guess the question would be for OP, are you willing to stick around and possibly change some of Lemmy’s culture, your own mind, or possibly both? Or are you just looking for a corporate approved hivemind echo chamber clone of Reddit? Not that this place can’t be an echo chamber, but federation prevents that so much more than on Reddit. Lemmy has no financial incentive to push an agenda or rhetoric; it’s all grassroots |
