This sounds almost too simple but it genuinely changed something for me. I'm not a naturally social person in the maintenance sense - I care about my friends, I think about them, but I'm terrible at actually reaching out unprompted. A few years ago I realized that most of my friendships were slowly going quiet not because anything bad happened, just because neither of us initiated and enough time passed that it started feeling weird to suddenly message out of nowhere. The six week interval specifically is the part that matters. Monthly felt like a chore, like I was forcing contact on a schedule that was too tight. Every two months and things start to actually drift. Six weeks hits this middle spot where enough time has passed that reaching out feels natural, but not so much time that the person feels like a stranger. I keep the reminder vague on purpose - "text someone" - so I actually have to think for a second about who I haven't heard from lately, which makes the choice feel intentional rather than random. The other thing I didn't expect is what it does for the person receiving the message. I've had multiple friends tell me they were having a rough week and my random "hey been a while, how are you doing" came at exactly the right moment. I can't take credit for timing, I was just following a calendar reminder. But the effect is real. Most people are not going to reach out when they're struggling, they wait for someone else to start. Sometimes you're that someone just by showing up at the right time by accident. It takes maybe four minutes every six weeks. I've rekindled two friendships I thought were basically over just by sending a message that said "dude I just realized we haven't talked since like October, how's everything going." Thats it. That was the whole thing. |
