That one was not a self-balancing centrifuge.
It was a fictional centrifuge in a fictional world. 🙄 |

I think this is a detail done on purpose. Presumably they actually just filmed a centrifuge, instead of faking it somehow. That means it must have been balanced, which means they balanced it another way just to film the "mistake." I think it's to get people to talk about this, which is incredibly minor, so people talk about how accurate it is by only having one stupid thing to complain about. N...
Why buy a real one? It doesn't need to work. They spent $20 attaching a disk with holes to a motor. |

Maybe. It was a lot more than that though. It had the shell and everything else. I suspect it'd be cheaper and easier to just buy or borrow a real one, even if it's not usable as lab equipment anymore. It's not like they're super uncommon. Also, that still needs to be balanced to some degree if it's spinning reasonably quickly. It doesn't just suddenly not impart a lot of force because it's a "fake" centrifuge. |

I loved the book and have been looking forward to this movie ever since it was announced, and it didn't disappoint. Project Hail Mary is probably going to end up being the best movie I'll see this year unless Spielberg's upcoming 'Disclosure Day' somehow manages to recapture the magic of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (1977). Which, I don't think is likely.
Yeah it was pretty good. I think I preferred Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die though. But only just. |

I tried watching it, but it feels very commercial and the lead actor seemed hammy to me. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. The Martian was decent, though. Maybe I'll give it another shot some time.
There are a few story-threads in the book that are either glossed over (or completely omitted) from the movie; and the movie (despite its runtime) still feels quite rushed. If reading isn’t your thing, maybe see if you can’t get your hands on the audiobook and give that a crack on your commutes/lunch breaks/whenever. Having both read the book (in anticipation of the movie), and having seen the film - I definitely enjoyed both at a solid 5/5, but can fully understand if it’s not for everyone. |

I genuenly like when Sci-fi understands that language is not universal and that communication requires effort. Most other IP just hand waves it with a translator or tech because most audiences wont handle subtitles, PHM, Stargate movie film, and Darmok (Star Trek: NG - S5E2) get it, and I appreciate that. Also they get the sound in space thing right. Loved the movie, the book has been added to ...
My favorite scene in dragon ball z: abridged "We shall speak the universal language: English" Works in a hard comedy but in scifi like sg1 was always jarring. |

Then you don't know that there's such a thing as a self balancing centrifuge. People who get hung up on this particular detail need to get over it. đź«©
It may be less about what the centrifuge can do and more about the culture surrounding centrifuges. It's my impression that people who are in a position to be using a centrifuge balance them out of habit. Even if they don't need to. Not balancing them (in the event that it is a self balancing one) may be similar to computer science debates about tabs vs spaces. A difference that's more cultural than important. I could be wrong, biology isn't my field. This is just my impression from having watched this debate play out several times. |

My main point is that a research scientist like Grace should have loaded it correctly. |

Why couldn’t it be a fancy self balancing one?
Grace would not have taken the risk. |

He's not terrified of dying in space. He's terrified of being alone. The irony of the story is that he finds more companionship twelve light years from earth with an alien than he ever had on his own planet. Grace had no living family, no close friends and no romantic partner. He sees others cynically because he has a rather poor self image and had really bad interpersonal experiences in the pa...
Yes, thank you, I'm sick of everything being "realistic" only for it to be am excuse for grim-dark dystopia. We need me positive, uplifting messages and stories especially these days. Anyway, bank to watching star trek and wishing humanity would in fact grow up. |

Having put two quarter filled 1.5ml tubes in the same way, it wont matter in the least. It isn't an ultrcenrifuge with 15 or 50mls of heavy metal. It's biological fluid, not uranium. |

But an experienced lab tech would automatically distribute balanced, just in case. |
