I had a friend do this. Not in the theatre, but a week later when we were talking about the movie. I wasn't sure how to tell him without embarrassing him, but he joked about it himself later.

Learned is more commonly used than learnt. From your own link… But I guess reading would get in the way of being a pervert.

"More commonly used" doesn't mean that the other is incorrect, as your comment implies. Also, it's only more common in the US, and we can't tell where the person is from by his initial comment.

No no you’re thinking of translator

What Poe did was amplify or switch electrical signals

I'm from the EU and originally learnt (haha) UK English, but since i'm a net citizen, some americanisms have found their way into my vocabulary - understandable when taking US exceptionalism into account.

I don't think I ever covered any Greek myths in school in the UK. Like many others I did have an interest in them so I did read the Iliad and Odyssey in my school years (though I don't remember which translations). We did cover a few Norse myths; the bit of the Prose Edda with the giant Skrymir was one that stuck with me for some reason At the end of the day there is simply far too much history...

Here in german speaking central europe i learnt (i wont stop using it just to piss @atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works off lol) about the wars among the greek citystates, with references to Homer, and later on when learning Latin (which i sucked at, but that's not so important right now) we read excerpts and learnt (hahaha roflcopter) about the mythology a lot more. There also were references to the Greek mythology in our literature classes.

"Less common" is not the same as "wrong", and it's doubly not the same as "wrong" when it actually just means "normal in other dialects of the language"

Ain’t is in the dictionary, it’s still considered incorrect.

I would even offer that everytime i use it, i send you a PM so you can comment on my incorrect usage ;-)

It's considered informal, and in some dialects (mine included) unusual. The Grammarly link you edited into your first comment doesn't even support a classification of "learnt" as informal, it literally just describes it as a dialect difference. You're doing the same thing as telling a Brit that they're spelling the word incorrectly if they write "colour"

I think you are confusing informal and irregular in this case.

Alas, poor atomicbocks, they learnt that people spelt some words differently in other parts of the world. Whilst they knew what was meant, 'twixt comment and reply all their indignation swept them up. They dreamt of a world in which they telt all speakers of the tongue how they ought to have exprest it

And all but two of these examples can still be heard regularly where I am!

I'm not, but "irregular" does not mean "wrong" either. Heaps of English words have irregular forms. "Built" is one of them.

Aw come on, stop ribbing him ;-) I looked up what he comments normally, and he seems like a stand up guy, and i have no hard feelings at all, as long as i made my point that education does not protect against assimilating different pidgins and integrating them into your common vocabulary.

Interestingly, my education regarding norse mythology was sorely lacking after school. We touched a few subjects, but without personal initiative i wouldn't know shit about it outside of Odin, Loki, Thor and the Midgard Snake.

I think I've been quite clear in repeatedly saying that "learnt" was not wrong to use in the context that it was used in there. You've so far ignored that:

  • The Grammarly source that you linked yourself does not say that "learnt" is wrong

  • The dictionary.com page that the other person linked does not say that "learnt" is wrong

  • A word being the less common form doesn't mean it's wrong

  • A word being informal doesn't mean it's wrong

  • A word being irregular doesn't mean it's wrong

I haven’t ignored anything but if you are going to be an asshole then I am going to ignore you.

Please look at the link again and pay attention to the difference in regional dialects. I would have been happy to learn that it was accepted in other places but instead I’ve been told to masturbate, and had two other people be a fucking asshole to me. Only one person has been simply informative and I looked it up further. Until you can emulate them kindly fuck off.

We did too but that was a few decades ago.

Absolutely baffling response. Your link specifically says that "learnt" is valid in some dialects. You quoted one of the times that it says that. I've said it. At least two other people have said it to you as well. Either you haven't read it or you are suffering from a crushing case of US-defaultism.

People, including me, have been rude to you because you started the conversation off by being rude and have continued being rude throughout the thread. The first comment you made was an attempt to mock someone for their spelling, which would be rude even if it was actually incorrect. Your replies to me have primarily been refusals to actually engage with anything I've said and, apparently, an equal refusal to properly read your own source.

To be fair, Nolan has named a protagonist Protagonist in the past Isn't that character named as such only in the script with their name never being mentioned in the movie itself?

Yeah, in Tenet the character is never named, but iirc he is listed as "Protagonist" in the credits, which is the standard placeholder name.

Here in the U.S., we cover the Greek stuff A LOT. Like it is hammered into your head. The reason for this is, of course, the U.S. sees itself as the heir to Athenian Democracy and Roman Republicanism, so we have to really emphasize that in our conditionin.... Uhhh education.

I read a lot of Greek mythology on my own and through elective classes but I think the only core course material I had on it was pretty brief. Shakespeare was pretty much every year starting in middle school but not much Greek.

I'm trying to remember if we studied greek and roman mythology in school, or if I just read about it on my own. Did I read the Odyssey for fun??? Maybe it was on those "read something from this list" summer reading assignments. I think I learned about the Achilles heel thing earlier because an art teacher had walking issues and talked about it. I'm not sure that counts as learning it in school ...

We were definitely taught it in the UK, would have been in fourth year of primary school if I remember correctly (so that would be roughly US grade 3 or so).

That still pisses me off. I get the reference, and it's still stupid. Then again so are the humans in that movie. They just had to nudge an asteroid so that it hit the area, then moved in with no local xenos or wildlife anywhere nearby. Nobody ever should have had to fight a single space smurf. I hate poorly written villains.

It is worse than that.

Assuming similar solar system formation physics as ours, there would have been plenty of unobtanium in the remnants from the forming of their solar system.

They shouldn't have even needed to land.
