It's right there: A post of him was deleted where he reported that a majority of arabic language comments in international media were celebrating the attack in Berlin on a Pride event, and were also celebrating the guy who weaponized his car. He says that this is a big, massive problem in that post. He then just posted "The mods have deleted my previous comment, is that for real?" while citing ...

So he posted misinformation that attacked arabic speakers, and the post got taken down?

I don't see the problem.

The difference with Trump was that he made it up or didn't remember what he had seen, then made no effort to find out if he was in error.

"Leave 'big tech' platforms, they're abusing their influence. Come to fediverse where power tripping mods abuse their position instead!"

Shitty humans being shitty.

The difference is in the fediverse you're not locked into one ecosystem. You can pick and choose what's best for you. In many cases, you can even take your connections and data with you when you move.

Ist halt ne wirklich dumme Verkürzung der Tatsachen, und wenn man sich so die Mehrheit der Kommentare in deutschsprachigen Onlinezeitungen anschaut dann könnte man auch denken die AfD hat 90% Zustimmung. Yes, at this point comments online don't mean all that much. Could be someone with an LLM or a small segment of very loud people with a lot of spare time.

The individual comment itself doesn't seem particularly bannable. But a pattern of islamophobia could be. Which may be the larger issue.

Yep. But I'm not sure what Centrism is, exactly. In America's Overton Window, Centrism typically means Classical Liberalism, while eschewing far-left mindsets like Marxism.

"Centrism" in modern politics is "being too ashamed to admit of being right-wing".

Any instance, mastodon.world for instance, is NOT Mastodon itself. It's this very thing that especially those who only came to Mastodon for reach often don't understand. All Fediverse newbies, except for those who escape from Reddit to Lemmy those very few who escape from Instagram to Pixelfed, are being railroaded to Mastodon without being told a thing about the Fediverse outside of Mastodon. ...

💯 exactly.
Question remains: what is the consequence of this detailed (and in my eyes correct) analysis?
Well, maybe this very generalized discussion goes too far beyond the concrete case. But those questions have been on my mind too for a few months; Is the fediverse good but too complicated for this world?

You want us to... Do what exactly? Stop using the instance none of us are using? Go ...

The perp wanted to join ISIS, you really think the same social group that danced in the streets after 9/11 is unable to praise someone running over gay people?

https://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/1v8u3xo/seeing_many_muslim_justify_even_blatantly_support/

Deleting his comment means the mod either agrees with ISIS, or would rather silence others who condemn these reactions than stand with them. The ban makes me think more about the first category.

I just wanted to set the record straight. He didn't pull the reactions of these people out of his ass, and he was communicating that this is a dangerous development. (might be inviting copycats) And he's right! Everyone celebrating this hates gay people - it is gravely concerning, similar to neonazis praising a perp when they murder an immigrant.

That's his version of events that he's showing to his audience. People who get banned from things often share a harmless-looking excerpt when that's not really what got them banned. It would be good to have the whole context before reaching a conclusion.

That’s his version of events that he’s showing to his audience.

Everything he says is his version of events, everything you say is your version of events, everything I say is my version of events. So... you never, ever need to say that. WE KNOW

Maybe I am too dense to get this, but how exactly can you be between left, conservative and liberal? Is that being centrist?

I am often called a centrist... I hold views the left and the right both despise, I agree with one here and the other there. In USA we are officially "independents" and are the majority of voters (40% independents, 30% Democrat ("left"), 30% Republican.

"independents" also include all other political parties (Greens, Libertarians, Socialists, et al), which are more active locally than federally.

No.

The majority of voters are centrists, if we were just ashamed of being right wing a Democrat could never win office, now could they? You require centrist votes to win any election

(major parties are only 30% of voters each, the other 40% are not secretly right wing)

If someone gets banned from an instance, they are free to move their account to a new instance and still keep their followers. Someone doesn’t just get to break instance rules just because they are a successful author. Attitudes need to change, if you approach the fediverse like corporate social media, you are doing it wrong. What’s his excuse going to be once he gets muted on bluesky?

Also, what does "banning" even mean? Lemmings I find love to abuse terminology so that a one-hour time-out period gets referred to as a "ban" (tbf this was inherited from Reddit, no matter how much we'd like to leave the old ways behind, they do tend to cling stubbornly).

But I don't know how Mastodon uses those words - is he even truly "banned" or merely "banned" for like an hour while the moderator spent that time researching the situation?

~11% of American voters are more on the extreme left, another ~11% more on the extreme right-wing, leaving a solid 4/5ths in the middle.

Which is why these terms aren't useful in a global forum like the Fediverse - when USA Democrats are simultaneously both left and also right, depending on the recipient's POV, then the term ceases to convey any (non-ambiguous) meaning.

Or we could use the terms properly in relation to the country of origin... except as the person you replied to shows, people refuse to use that level of consideration that their preferred way is not the only lens through which to view the entire world.

Honestly, spending time on Lemmy has made me less left-leaning than I used to be. All the hate and vitriol and especially disinformation spreading has really turned me away from it all. Especially when I see how it is identical to the right-wing POVs.

Extremists on both sides: death to everyone who holds viewpoints different from my own!!

It's not misinformation if it is true but you don't like the implications. You can argue that it is not valid to draw conclusions about the attitudes of people in the world based only on those people (or bots) leaving comments on news articles. But it's not misinformation to say that's what you saw or that it concerns you if it is actually true.

There's billions of Muslims...

So you could literally show me 10s of millions that are dicks, and I'll say that means thos 10s of millions of people are dicks.

I wouldn't say that means all the billions of Muslims are dicks.

You could sub "Muslim" for any demographic, my logic would stay the same because I'm not a fucking bigot.

If you ignore how these cultures abuse and kill their LGBT population with death sentences based on religious law, you are a bigot, because you wouldn't be that lenient if for example catholic italy would do the same.

Again:

The actions of even 10s of millions doesn't give you a reason to judge all 2+ billion.

It's based on "religious law" by the interpretation of extremists.

Something shared with the other two Abrahmic religions and multiple others.

But at this point you are being explicitly bigoted and don't have ignorance as an excuse

Thats the problem here: i don't see any countries where laws are based on the bible and interpreted in a way that legitimizes murder of minorities based on their gender and orientation, and especially not such a widespread usage of sharia law.

You can educate me if you know of any that do so currently, and i know that not everything is peachy in all countries (especially since Trump 2 in the US), but by and large this behaviour is not socially accepted and for sure our judges don't condemn anyone to death for being gay.

Sharia is fundamentally incompatible with democracy, and also in my view incompatible with human rights. And you are falling victim to the "no true scotsman" fallacy - denying that Muslims stance towards LGBT in general is absolutely abhorrent and often deadly where they have power doesn't help anyone.

The problem you have is those countries don't exist?

The reason they don't exist, is Western Christian nations never created them like they did for Islamic and Jewish extremists.

Seriously, whatever country you're talking about, go look on Wikipedia at who put the current regime in charge and what it was like before.

If you don't have a specific example in mind, use IRA.

And you are falling victim to the “no true scotsman” fallacy - denying that Muslims stance towards LGBT in general is absolutely abhorrent and often deadly where they have power doesn’t help anyone.

I'm saying by that logic (which is wrong) you should apply it to anyone that follows any of the Abrahmic religions.

There would still be problems with it, but it would be logically consistent at least.

The word ban does not imply any duration on its own.

Irl if you "ban" something, like cigarettes, then it does not necessarily imply forever but it does sorta imply until the law is changed i.e. until further notice.

So then if you ban a person for a period of one week, the timeline needs to be delivered alongside the word - "banned for a week".

Which the OP did not do, and moreover (I am not sure if the post was edited or was always this way), seems to go out of its way to imply a permanent banning? Though the phrasing used was "cancels" rather than bans.

Well, perhaps it's a language issue, but this OP is also quite sensationalistic, so my fault I suppose for engaging with what is clearly an emotional rant rather than a piece of any substance (again, regardless of whether the original subject is true or not, I am saying that this post does a poor job describing what occurred).

Thank you for proving my point.

I am very likely to be killed myself, though whether by the Left or Right is anyone's guess at this point.

The two are not so dissimilar after all - since the right claims to be correct while the left says that bOtH sIdEs SaMe, hence don't bother voting, which amounts to the same outcome.

In fairness, I should have said that the "left" and right are similar, since the left is more like "genocide is always wrong" whereas the "left" is like "genocide is only wrong when done by oThEr SiDe BaD" (i.e. Russia, China, and North Korea can do no wrong).

Or perhaps listing 3 different positions and claiming someone is between them is confusing.....

Given they were directly responding to a quote of the confusing statement, perhaps they were not remarking on the actual position, but on the confusing nature of the description ?

Not really. The most accurate thing would simply to identify the people who are saying such things as a group. Creating arbitrary correlation with some shared aspects is well arbitrary at best, or worse just a dog whistle.

heavy-handed moderation.

Thanks. The selection of texts makes it clear that he has slowly moved from being a serious journalist to a pundit that publishes mostly opinion pieces that cater to conservative and latently racist audience and are likely also attempts at rage baiting left-liberals. Basically an opportunist exploiting the "also show the other side" bias of liberal media like the Spiegel and I would not be over...

Ah, that'd in part explain why mastodon would readily kick him off, yes.

I postulate that people posting comments in arabic languages on international news sites are by a large majority people who live in the respective countries outside of immigrants that still feel more connected to their country of origin than to the countries they are currently in, comparable to the fact that people posting in german are with a 95%+ probability coming from the DACH area or are immigrants into other countries.

No dogwhistle here. Specific languages point to specific geographic areas where these languages are prominently spoken, and if you are using german on the comment section of the bbc, people will rightly assume that you come from the DACH area.

The account no longer appears in search, the profile page is gone, and all of the posts, uploads, followers, and all other data are removed publicly. However, all the data is available in the admin back-end for a period of 30 days from suspension. This is to give the user an opportunity to work with instance admins to resolve any potential issues and have the account re-instated.

it doesn't get more permanently banned than "deletion of user profile, posts, followers and uploads"
