I went into this story thinking Project Moon Dust was a classified Cold War program for recovering Soviet satellites that occasionally brushed up against UFO cases. After going through the Air Force records, Project Blue Book files, State Department cables, FOIA correspondence and decades of work by researchers including Kevin Randle, Clifford Stone, Robert Todd and Barry Greenwood, I don’t think that description goes far enough.

Moon Dust and Blue Fly were a documented crash-retrieval architecture, and there is substantial evidence that UFO recovery was among the functions contemplated for it. The Air Force has never admitted that the system actually recovered a UFO—but its own records show UFO cases entering Moon Dust channels, intelligence personnel being tasked for UFO recovery or field exploitation and, in a 1997 letter reproduced by Stone, Blue Fly being described as including UFOs “available for recovery.” The article asks the narrower question the documents can actually answer: Was Moon Dust a UFO recovery program?
