There's a cashier at my local grocery store who's around my age. We've been talking whenever we see each other for a few months. The first time we talked was a few months ago because I was wearing a Metallica shirt. We ended up talking about metal music and other bands for a few minutes, and that was that. A while later, I went back to the store wearing a different shirt and she remembered me and pointed out that I wasn't wearing the Metallica shirt. Since then, it's basically become a running joke between us. Whenever she sees me, she'll sometimes ask where the Metallica shirt is. We've had several conversations about music, concerts, our town, etc. She's very outgoing and seems to enjoy talking to me. I genuinely can't tell whether she's flirting with me or just being friendly, but there seems to be some kind of rapport there. Anyway, yesterday we were talking at the register, and toward the end of the interaction she said something like: “Next time I see you, you better be wearing that Metallica shirt!” I thought this was my opportunity to playfully tease her back, so I looked at her and said: “Next time I see you, you better be wearing those fucking glasses!” I immediately realized my mistake and tried to play it off, but there is no graceful way to recover when you watch someone's face go from playful to “what the fuck did this guy just say?” She just looked at me horrified and told me to have a nice day. The worst part is that I actually think she's cute and have been thinking about asking for her Instagram. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I just completely fucked up months of gradually getting to know her because I couldn't figure out how to flirt like a functional human being. TLDR I've been talking to a cashier for months and we've developed a running joke about my Metallica shirt. She told me I better wear it next time, so I tried to tease her back by saying she better wear her glasses but it came out the worst possible way. |
