i see the paradox of tolerance not as a defense of tolerance, but as its demolition. it shows that tolerance is not a coherent principle: taken absolutely, it destroys itself; limited, it depends on some higher principle that is not tolerance.

Intolerance is like cancer; your body isn't healthy as long as cancer cells exists, and thus intolerance can't be tolerated!

а bad analogy is like a squirrel with a drawer.

Any movement that preaches intolerance and persecution must be outside of the law. This is a common misconception about the Paradox of Tolerance, and I'm going to reference the person who invented it: Karl Popper in his 1945 work, The Open Society and Its Enemies: I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter the...

But in Denmark it is illegal to preach intolerance, like racism and nazism.

Yes, we don't protect free speech in Denmark. However we do not ban people who subscribe to intolerant ideologies, like Islam.

Read it again. He's using incitement to violence as a consequence to to be avoided, not as a driving factor. for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists ...

Read it again. He’s using incitement to violence as a consequence to to be avoided, not as a driving factor.

He's explaining the why. That statement is there for a reason, and your reading implies it's superfluous.

He was writing at the end of WW2. He was saying it would have been fine to stop the Nazis at the start, before they were inciting violence because they couldn’t be reasoned with.

The National Socialist German Workers' Party employed violence well before they achieved power. Popper's warnings are obviously an allusion to the Brownshirts.

It’s clear you don’t agree with his position , and that’s okay. You can just disagree with him.

This is catty. Like a little girl. I've extended you courtesy and I would appreciate reciprocity.

Catty? "Like a little girl"? The hell is wrong with you people that you're looking so hard for insult where none is intended? I apologize for being too casual in my assertion that I think you're bending the work to fit your views instead of explaining why you think his views on tolerance aren't correct.

Yes, I'm saying he included that statement because it's the "why". Suppression of intolerant speech can be justified because it can lead to violence. The violence or incitement thereto isn't a precondition that justifies suppression in his view, but the end state to be avoided.

I'm not sure what you're saying by drawing a distinction between the Nazis and the brown shirts or spelling out the party name. I know the Nazis were violent before they had political power.
That doesn't really have anything to do with what I said.

Perhaps. But the same would apply to the other golden rule. It's not "Do unto others as they would have you do unto them." If you do what you feel is right, it doesn't matter if people disagree with you. You'd at least be ideologically consistent, not a hypocrite. If being a good person requires pleasing people, there would be no good people in the world. "People" are impossible to please becau...

nah, it's more than arrogant to assume you know what others want, and ignorant to assume others want the same a you.

I never said you would assume you know what others want. It's precisely because you can't know that, that you can't base your personal morality on it. Unless of course you want to live by a moral code that requires you to guess more than half the time?

That's why you do what you think is right. And if you end up being wrong, learn from it. But you'll never please 8 billion people so don't even try.

and ignorant to assume others want the same a you.

Okay now that's just a strawman, I never said nor implied anything of the sort.

So, not to revive an old thread, but I have to say thank you for sharing this. I binged the whole series in the last two weeks. Magnificent.

It's soooooo fucking good, right?!!! I'm just upset that I started reading it so close to the end, as I thought it was already done when I started it last year. And now I've passed the curse of longing onto others.

I will offer you this, I didn't realize on my first go around that there are additional details upon hovering over the comics with a mouse, which has led me to a second reading. It has clarified a lot

Crap on a stick. That's such a common web comic thing. Because I ready the majority on a touch screen I forgot to even check for that.

Oh well, it's in my folder of comics now. I'm since I'm caught up, I'll probably let a backlog build up again for a month or two, and that'll probably get me to re-binge chapters at random.
