What I mean is that if they wanna make a linux native client that’s not just a web interface in a shell, then, yeah, it’s gonna take a bunch of effort. And their dev team is already stretched between maintaining a windows native and a relatively new macos native client. But with most of the work already done and having made a macOS native client, porting that to linux shouldn’t be too much more...

Aye, I follow you. I honestly couldn't say yay or nay. Might be as easy as switching some libraries out and making a good GUI in Qt/Adwaita/what have you, like what Kagi is doing with Orion. It could be more involved than that too.

my point is, i suppose, that most of the hard work of making a *NIX-version is done (or, at least half-2/3). macOS is BSD with a bunch of proprietary stuff added on by Apple. strip it down, and it's still BSD and works like BSD/UNIX. so, usually getting something to be cross-compatible isn't that difficult-- at least not so bad as porting something directly from Windows.

hehe... but it's certainly a lot easier going from linux > macOS than the other way around. that process is usually a seamless matter of downloading a couple of extra dependancies via homebrew.

Dont forget Faugus - it has slowly but surely replaced heroic on my devices.

I moved from Lutris to Heroic, so would you explain why you moved from Heroic to Faugus?

Just for gaming purposes, having a unified front end that: lets you start an application with the arguments it needs, whether to use a specific Wine folder, or start an emulator with the right arguments lets you tag up each application with some custom arguments - genre, date, and so on - and lets you filter and sort by them lets you configure each app with their own box art or whatever as an i...

The ability to apply community patches easily was super handy as well. It made installing games like Dungeon Keeper and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines extremely simple.

It's now been months since I've successfully got Lutris to even install a game. It practically turned to slop overnight.

While I do agree that native is often better, in this case I don't. I actually even use Heroic Launcher on Windows for Epic Games aswell.

Yeah their native client is a special case. It's actually an unreal engine application that runs chromium to display at least parts of the store.

Consider considering that it has worked very well on macOS for years, it can’t be that much of a leap to get it working on Linux.

Installing and running programs is wildly more complicated on Linux than macOS. On macOS there is only one way to do it: a self contained .app bundle. On Linux there are….several incompatible standards. And if you do it a different way than a specific Linux user’s preference, they will loudly complain and tell you that you’re doing it wrong. Even if it works.

noooot really, and you’re already coming in with a full head of steam.

This is only really true in the strict context of “what can happen in 2026”, and not in the context of if “ what has been historically accomplished up to today, 2026”

The difference? Pretty much 98% if POSIX apps (including the vast amount of pre-steam gaming, and a lot of current steam games), so don’t let this bitter bitch try to convince you otherwise.

@ayyy, you can complain all you like about how you don’t understand how macOS works or how it is similar and to LINUX and UNIX, but do it somewhere else that doesn’t waste the rest of our time. The rest of us are trying to come together to solve a problem. It’s clear that your only interest is in driving everyone apart, and that doesn’t solve problems. It just creates them.

And no one here is interested in that bullshit

They’ll probably do it similar to what steam does. Steam has learnt a lot there over the years. It’s definitely a pro if it can be easily repackaged, paths configured and they follow the desktop standards, but it will also work without. People will certainly complain if they have to fix stuff themselves

EGS has some integration with UE so if you're buying marketplace assets it's easy to keep them updated and to add them to projects. Since UE can compile to Linux if you're running Linux, this is a move that makes Linux a more appealing OS for game development.

Sure, it's all stuff you can do manually. But the sweeter you make the pot the more regular users you attract to your OS.

Not just because it enables more access for everyone, but because it represents a deepening commitment by these companies to Linux as a gaming platform. The more companies see Linux as a viable gaming platform, the more consumers will. It's a virtuous cycle, and one that will only help to erode Windows grip on the desktop OS space.

But while windows has that grip, more malware and scams will target windows users. I'm getting tired of seeing good things ruined by their own success.

It's wild that Sweeney would let this happen. He's been pretty vocally anti-linux in the past. Must be a big enough change to make him consider Linux dollars worth chasing.

Better software support??? There's stuff I'm still struggling to replace and I'd rather native linux builds than have to go back for it.

If we have things like Heroic on Linux, and if they are just bringing the Epic Game Store only and not the anti cheat, then who cares. Nothing has really changed then, as we were always able to play all non-online games from our Epic libraries anyways.

Plus you can bet your ass that the new and official EGS app will have SO MANY issues when that is released. It was a mess (still kinda is) even on Windows. So many bugs. I wouldn't be surprised if many Linux users will just continue using the alternatives for the smaller resources it takes up.

RetroArch has the old-school Linux problem of "all the functionality you need, plus all the functionality anyone might ever need, plus all the functionality that no-one needs, all arranged seemingly at random in dozens of menus" This definitely does happen sometimes, especially these days, but this is explicitly opposite to old-school Linux design principles. A program should do one thing, it s...

The concept suffers a little bit with graphical applications. They don't exactly have equivalents to stdin, stdout and stderr which you could pipe or read/write willy-nilly.

RetroArch isn't far off from the philosophy I think, those emulation cores are pretty much independent projects plugged into a frontend. Unfortunately that default frontend is pretty clunky and doesn't come with sane defaults for known ROMs. Or even sane menu navigation tbh, main menu and game menu looked way too similar last time I used it…
