Ah that definitely makes sense. I think by the time I was experimenting with distros, things had probably moved on a bit. I can say from experience that using Arch just requires the ability to read, really. But it was probably more hardcore in its earlier days when the wiki wasn't as well formed yet.
Yeah, much of the documentation on the arch wiki was written by enthusiasts who did the legwork and drew maps along the way so we now know where to go. |

I already knew Linux. What it made me learn is systemd. And I'll say it without shame, I like systemd. I know it doesn't follow the Unix philosophy but it's just semantics.
For me, it falls into the pragmatic gap between idealism and usability. Is it perfect? Most certainly not. Does it serve a good portion of use cases? Apparently. Does it work as a more-or-less de facto standard to provide a common platform for other things to build on? Evidently. If we could codify the resulting standards and assumptions and create a more modular ecosystem to plug that same gap, that would still be a lot of work, and at some point, most people just wanna build the damn house instead of overengineering the foundation. Perfect is the enemy of good, and systemd has to be good enough. |

Where did this stereotype actually come from? I'm genuinely curious. Because Windows users wouldn't know Arch from Ubuntu and to them, all Linux users are "I use Linux btw" types. And I don't think I've seen Arch users just randomly telling people they use Arch in Linux spaces. But it must've come from somewhere.
I heard someone explain that it wasn't really that popular some time ago, so they would just say "I use arch btw" to get people to know the distro and apparently it worked Or it's just bullshit and i'il never know |

honestly, systemd isn't that bad. I'm finishing some free labs for the CompTIA Linux+ sysadmin course and learning how to compose bash scripts into services is going to be great for my homelab. I completely ditched windows at home in early 2020 and used fedora until last year when I took the plunge into NixOS. I knew how to do things in Linux, but I wanted to understand the underlying system structure. NixOS helped pull back the veil a bit. |
