What's the expert opinion on using Stremio with the extra add-ons for streaming? Seems a little too easy and convenient to be true. I can't help but wonder what they get out of it, and how safe it is. Am I overthinking it?

I've been doing Stremio for over a year now. I used to have RealDebrid but it started having issues for me so I started using Premiumize instead. The last year has been INCREDIBLE. I think it's ridiculous to have to pay for something monthly and STILL get hit with ads. It's bullshit.

Option C is to just go without, but apparently I'm the only fool doing that

Books are better than TV anyway. Once you own a book, no corpo fuckwad can take it away from you.

True that, physical books are one of the last forms of physical media still not laden with DRM (along with the rare collector vinyls, cassettes, and videotapes). Even then - I also boycott most writers anyway, but that's for other ethical reasons.

I have been out of the 🏴‍☠️scene for a while and this was the most trusted one back in the days. Are there other alternatives now?

You can use an aggregator these days like Knaben. Much easier

Every time I recommend a show and they ask me where they can watch it. Fuck if I know.

My 7 year old is always telling her friends that she watches such-and-such show on Jellyfin. 😅

Why do people STILL recommend TPB in 2026? It's shady af.

While I've moved to arr stack and usenet these days, I've literally never had an issue with TPB

Private tracker users are a bunch of rich old douchebags laughing at people who aren't members of their in group? That tracks.

oh yeah now that I think it was a forward from my ISP about the Nintendo DMCA notice?

Ok, good deal. Those are pretty much toothless. If Nintendo themselves contacted you, I would be very worried.

If your subscriptions exceed $65/mo, just cancel them and get cable.

It’s yours because there is a technical debt, which can flummox some. Some of the torrent places, have javascript messes that are trying to do drive-bys.

I have been using NoScript for a long time, and it helps.

Unless it’s an ebook on an ereader.

The DRM is the cover, according to some jackets I’ve read. Basically, it says something like, “if you received this without the cover, contact the publisher.”

If there's nothing to watch then don't subscribe to four different services. Streaming gives you more say in which channels/services you get than cable does.

And trials are okay, if you cancel it on time.

You’re also paying the ISP so that’s another cost on top of these subscriptions.

Sorta random but related: Does anyone know how to access (preferably download from) Roku channels privately? There's one channel I need everything from, but can't give my TV internet access anymore.

Ditto. Kinda miss my private tracker. But, 1337x + VPN works fine for me.

But also be very careful you don't end up on a typosquatter like 1377x. There's many.

Yeah that happens. The company issuing the DMCA notice doesn't know who you are, they just log the IP address and send a notice to the ISP, who forwards it to you.

The ISP can absolutely cancel your account if they keep getting notices about your activities though.

I wanted to watch the most recent Rick & Morty season today. Had to look up what streaming service it was on, then had to download the app, but just before I texted my wife to ask what the credentials were (she pays for streaming stuff), I remembered that I could just go download it. So I did. And proceeded to watch 5 episodes with zero ads and zero interruption.

wanted to watch a show with the family on the weekend

the slowest more interruptive part of the process of getting it on the TV was when I forgot to move the downloaded files to my Plex library folder. forty seconds later and it was fixed. and the controls actually worked and weren't all fucky like most apps are on the AppleTV with the shitty apple remote

Live TV is so bad that I would take $65/mo of corporate streaming services over FREE cable.

I choose neither, but if those were the only two options there's no contest.

Unless it’s an ebook on an ereader.

Even then, DRM-free formats like EPUB and PDF still exist, and places like Kobo still sell them.

Everytime I look for alternates I end up with sites that offer torrents of movies that end in .exe. so I end up going back to TPB.

Ext.to had been a great source for movies and shows. It's now my first stop.

There are dht search tools like rats-search (https://github.com/librats/rats-search) that seams to do p2p searches. But um, be careful since you can find some pretty fucked up shit there.

I'm working on building an HTPC out of an Optiplex 3040 SFF. Except the fucking "Support Assist" bullshit comes up immediately after POSTing, every single time, and I can't figure out how to disable it.

Edit: my point was that we have a pair of Apple TVs and a pair of Rokus that we're also getting fed up with.

My post was specific to Kindle readers, which can revoke access to books programmatically.
