I would agree. Hence why I said "This isn't how I'm doing my personal solar power." Apparently American units are coming with an outlet you install in place of a standard outlet which does monitor the combined power, so the building will have to be modified slightly. Still...any more than a couple hundred watts, if you can, have a proper system installed.

This doesn't sound right: measuring at one outlet doesn't grantee you're measuring the full circuit load unless you can be absolutely sure it's the very first outlet in a branch circuit specifically. A ring circuit throws that idea out entirely. To measure reliably, you'd have to measure at the breaker itself as well as the solar inverter.

Maybe a replacement breaker, that measures and comunicates with the imverter?

You run into compatibility issues with the different electrical panel manufacturers though...

Idk, I'll have to get my hands on one of these kits when available and look closer.

About the second point: it appears they will need the same grid intertie circuitry that inverters need … β€œβ€¦and include equipment that prevents power from flowing back to the grid during an outage”

I wonder how fast that shut off is. Will it prevent a shock if you unplug and touch the male plug?

Yeah, the idea is nice, but it smells an awful lot of wall socket generators and suicide cords

Not sure what's up with the downvotes, that's a legitimate concern any time you've got a male plug supplying power... It literally IS a solar wallsocket generator with what's essentially a suicide cord permanently attached.

I'm sure they've put some protection in place; but still.

plug-in solar systems Damn, I didn't know they made solar systems that can be plugged in, whatever that means! πŸ™ƒπŸͺ Edit: guys, I'm making a pun, notice the planet emoji. "Solar system". Get it? πŸ˜ƒ

Simple as it sounds, you just plug them into a wall outlet and as long as the grid is powered, it will feed power back into your house. The grid being powered requirement means they don't work during blackouts, but that is mainly intended to avoid electrocuting a line worker when they expect the line not to have any power.

Oh, it's because I skipped out on the preemptive disavowal.

See, the vast majority of lemmy is functionally illiterate, so if you wanna object to, eg., solar panels, you have to start your comment with something like "Well, I agree that global warming is a huge problem, and solar is a way to fight it, and I support more solar [..] but,..." or else the feral hogs on the thread will just see you saying "solar bad" and assume you're a flat earther.

Thanks, I was just making a pun πŸ™

Oh, my sincerest apologies, I had mentioned them to some other people and they legitimately didn't know.

I thought it would be nice to get a wind turbine since that could produce some useful electricity in months that contain the letter 'r'. 11k EUR 2 kW Price of electricity is like 10 cents a kWh average throughout the year 11000/2/0.1 = 55000 hours Will pay off if it produces 2 kW for 6 years straight. I don't think I'm getting one.

Even open flat farmland might not be good enough. They need to follow ridgelines for best success.

After the dollar collapses all of us are going to be on farms

Guess again.

Let’s see if Newsom signs it. With the way he tried to push through liability limits for electric companies (who seem to be too good at creating wildfire disasters) I have my doubts. His presidential ambitions have led him down the dark path of caring more about corporate sponsorship than voters.

Isn't he rich? Surely he always cared more about corporations than about people.

I suspect the circuit tracks the sine wave curve of the incoming grid power (like a zero voltage switch circuit does). If so, the shut off will occur in a fraction of 1/60th of a second.
