As I said to the other almost identical comment you made defending them and criticising everyone for not being as wise as you: you can't buy Netflix for 107.88. That's just not an price they sell anything. But you can buy a whole selection of products from these dicks for .88 prices, which is a fixed price they specifically picked. Not a coincidence, a deliberate and conscious decision. As you ...
I just looked at their website, there isn't a .88 price anywhere. If you select annual payment, it shows the price as "$3.99 per month, billed annually", which turns out to be the 47.88 from the article if you multiply it with 12. ETA: I don't want to defend 1password, but we should criticize them for things they actually do. Like funding facists. |

Control. Promotion of ideals that not-so-secretly align with their own.
Jup, there's literally nothing going on from a design- or technical perspective. The guy pretty much just ships his Hyprland rice and calls it a distro. It's just part money-laundering, part promotion of ideals. |

I wonder if Arch brings in anywhere near what this is getting.
Man if only that money would have been sent to them and not this clown. |

I don’t believe for a second that this jabroney distribution that most people haven’t heard of is the highest used among 1Password users. That statement needs fact checking
Logistically it doesn't even make sense. Like, it's only existed for maybe a month or so (at least, in the public mind). Are we to assume that a lot of people have decided to switch distros recently? |

The distro comes with all of DHH's tools preinstalled so it happens to install 1Password too, so if they just count dumb installs it could very well be true even though almost no one uses it practice. |

Keepass has always been great. If you aren't regularly sharing account logins with other people, you just have a file you can sync using whatever method you want. For clients, I recommend KeepassDX on android, and KeePassXC on PC.
I have been using Works flawlessly! Especially for me, as I am the only user. |

Uuuuhhhh... those prices... kinda have a, um, theme. I see the issue compounding too. Back in February, 1Password raised subscription prices, taking effect at renewals from March 27. Individual plans went up 33 percent from $35.88 to $47.88 a year, and family plans went up 20 percent from $59.88 to $71.88
This is the first time I see a conspiracy theory gain traction like that on Lemmy. Please, do not fall for that bullshit. |

Funding for what? Some dotfiles? I literally don't understand why forking Arch would require a third of a million dollars.
Yeah, I don't get it either, and I don't get why this guy/project specifically gets funding... The only link I can see is that he's openly far-right, which might appeal to the "dudebro prepper" type of crowd. |

How do you promote ideals through a Linux distro? Does it come with a standard swastika wallpaper or something? I bet most of the Omarchy users have no idea who DHH is... |

That stood out to me too. It comes preinstalled with Omarchy so thats something but also Omarchy has like, a thousand daily active users so even that doesn't sit right. |

Yeah but even then, it's an extremely niche distro and 99.9% of Linux users using a password manager service are using bitwarden/vaultwarden. It just doesn't make sense. |

At this point I can't help but think that the Omarchy funding is some sort of money laundering scheme. I just don't get it.
I think the dev just has connections and the people donating don't understand what they're giving to. |

"Astroturfed" implies an appearance of a grassroots campaign, here the dev has connections to wealthy people who give him money, that's really all there is to it. |

I think calling it a distro is pretty offensive to the maintaining actual distros |

I was referring to all the YouTube stuff recently from folks I normally trust. Now I’m starting to question it. |

This is unfortunately a side effect of "Year of the Linux Desktop". With adoption comes "market share" so... It's on the radar now, of everyone who ruined everything else for us. They're gonna try to infect Linux with their cancerous greed and surveillance capitalism as well. I've come to the point I just hate business. Ugh. Can't we just be fine and left alone? |

Every dev I know who does knows who DHH is at least by association, he may be a nobody for regular people but he's a big name in our industry |

Oh right Keepass is the uncivilized version and the KeepassXC is the linux one.
AFAIK keepassXC is the c++ rewrite and runs on Linux, Mac and even windows |
