You can reach your audience from a variety of channels. At least one of them should be free. This should be seeringly obvious to an org like EFF.

Well that website links to livestream.eff.org, and that page says the stream will be "simulcast", i.e. mirrored, to Twitch and Youtube. So the main channel is indeed free.

Yeah it looked great until the creator of it went on a mad dash banning everyone he didn't like for wrongthink, not quite sure how your message came through to me I'm pretty sure I was banned for every ism under the sun It's especially ironic when I get called a right wing American when I detest America, the level of thought here is the most primitive I've ever seen on an internet forum "agree ...

Instance admins are - and should be - entirely free to pick and choose who gets platformed on their own personal machines. That is their freedom and right! Though you are likewise free to pick an instance that aligns well with your own values, or even spin up one of your own (even using PieFed, or alternately Lemmy or Mbin, etc.) - that is your freedom and right!!:-)

A lot of what gets said about PieFed is overblown or even untrue... but obviously not all. I see that you are banned from the entire instance of PieFed.social... though I also see a significant amount of content from you hosted on that instance - so maybe there's a bug and the ban didn't take? (iirc that has happened before...) Or perhaps there's a different bug and it expired already, but without indication of that fact? The modlog offers no reason why, just that it was done by an admin.

The Political Left is fairly divisive, but it's that way everywhere, it's just that there's more of such people here than most other places. And it is highly ironic that the people who claim to most value empathy are the least likely to offer it to others on a personal level - though in fairness this has more to do with "extremism" and the tribal level of thinking that are traps often fallen into by people on both sides of any kind of political division that someone chooses to make.

I suppose your options are either to mask up, or narrow your spaces of interactions, or else simply become insensitive to others responses (I hope you don't choose this option). The easiest route might be to avoid discussing anything even remotely political in the largest communities here. Bc while you may have been offered a "right" to speak your mind simply by making an account on some instance somewhere in the Threadiverse, other instances and also each community and individually also reserves the right to not enjoy what you have to say, and to not offer their spaces to platform your views.

Would you like to share with the class what point you're trying to make? E: this person still has not answered.

That yours is not the only voice that matters. That other people are allowed to convey ideas and the world isnt just waiting with baited breath for you to bless us with yours.

Where they get absolutely roasted for their stance on AI 😄

Their correct stance that copyright doesn't protect rights holders from training AI on content scraped legally.

Im pretty active in cooking/gardening/gaming. Dont post much about politics, honestly cuz Im afraid of the surveilence state.. so I avoid comment mostly in that topic and lurk. Seems okay to me, I dont often fight with anyone. It's what you make it. Post about your hobbies, remain positive, and youll get that back; Not only here, but it works this way in life mostly too. No one cares where your...

Ooh can I get links to those comms

I don't know what that means sorry, can you explain further? A quick look at your profile shows you're clearly in your zone here (American politics, Linux and Left Wing Progressive/American politics) so that's good for you at least?

It's pretty ok, yes. There's no shortage of platforms, and this one pushes for community control, so its political leaning isn't surprising, and since I like community control, I fit. You should try to find your community that aligns with you, but with software and communities that favor common working there's little chance it will not be left leaning

Do you need to be rightwing to get annoyed by boring bland statements that get repeated over and over and over and over and over again that oversimplify and frame everything as the pure evil that cannot be convinced to change vs us Even if you agree with them, do they not annoy you?

That doesn't mean the place sucks, that only means I choose which topics/communities I spend time with. I'm not going to blame people for being angry at the system, for making their own education. I'm not expected to be part of these conversations, so I don't go there. Some days I don't even open the app andit's fine

Of course, that alone is not terrible, but when that, along with us politics and linux, are literally in every single community and people will complain if you dare to mention that you do not want us politics filling your feed, that may become an issue

A doctor must go where the sick people are.

That ended in like, the 1700s. We have hospitals now.

What happened with the creator of piefed?

Rimu basically went nuts and made a List, like The List from the Tesseract guy. Except this one was baked at the code level of the software running the backend of the communities, so communities got forced to ban left-wing aligned content on update without a choice in the matter. Plus, the software had CCP-style shadow profiling of people to hide their posts, and in at least one known case editorializing someone's posts on client view, without the poster being made aware that their content was being editorialized (essentially, attributing them false speech).

What does any of that have to do with your doctor analogy?

Rimu and the Lemmy devs are all complex characters. For instance, the Lemmy devs are widely known to edit people's messages without telling them. Otoh, most of us consider that fine. Note that this is a weird, conspiratorial manner of phrasing the slur word filter that changes a message's content after submission, and obviously the author will subsequently see that their message has been altered from what they had intended - there have been numerous posts over the years asking why this is, from people who did not realize that this feature existed.

Rimu's addition of an attribution not to singular people but to whole entire URL domains or instances is one such example - it is not "blocking" or "filtering" content, but allowing instance admins a third option to retain the content while placing a message next to it, which could for instance warn users that their home instance takes no responsibility for the correctness of such a message, or that the expectations for comment replies differs from the norms. Otherwise the only other option would be to filter out the message entirely - which I also note that the Lemmy devs are infamous for doing extremely often anyway. Rimu thus offers this as a LESSER limitation upon free speech than what the Lemmy devs have deigned to offer.

The PieFed software is "opinionated" - that's valid - but most of the hate it gets is extremely overblown, while overlooking how it offers MORE rights to people than Lemmy. We don't need to be so tribal - which I admit I've been myself for far too long.

Anyway, FOSS is free software regardless, and anyone at all could fork it at any time. In fact, PyLova already did just that, and is even adding several nice features that PieFed lacks:-).

A doctor cannot be in several places at once. That's where your analogy falls apart.

I'd say it holds up even more. All sick people go to hospitals and that's where we employs doctors. EFF's target audience^[1]^ are using Twitch so they go there.

1: I assume, since why would they use Twitch otherwise?

All sick people go to hospitals

Yes, once again, that's why this analogy does not make sense. The EFF is not running a hospital, they're running a livestream, which can happen in any of a dozen different places simultaneously.

So people on the Fediverse shouldn't be allowed to participate?

Not everything caters to you, I'm sorry that's a hard concept for you to stomach.

Oh damn. I meant their website, but I didn't notice they just embed a Twitch stream on their website, thought it was a self-hosted stream. Never mind me.

Perfect is the enemy of the good, aight? Checking every single ethical box will leave you with an audience of 1,5 nerds. For EFF, this would be a massive failure on their mission. EFF needs outreach, and Twitch provides it. Managing a political project is in a big way about pragmatism, and EFF maintains integrity where it matters.

He just has to virtue signal against platforms that allow people to say things he doesn't like.
