I have been opening Lemmy for about two months now, browsing the communities and reading users’ comments, and yesterday I decided to create an account.

Honestly, as someone who has only been on Reddit since 2018, I am curious to know what Reddit looked like in its early years, and Lemmy is a really good opportunity for that.

The content is limited? One day Reddit’s content was limited too and then it grew! + Platforms and communities don’t grow on their own. they grow because of the people in them.

I keep my feeds on the app very curated which helps a lot. There are some niche subs that I like to visit still that don't have a presence on here.

I just.... left. I came here during the API change drama. Started to get acquainted with the platform before Apollo stopped working. And when it did, I never came back. Didn't even bother deleting my few hundred comments or give them the chance to ban me for not being a nazi propagandist cunt.

Same as well, RiF was what used. I didn't download their app so it was a little easier not to go back.

I recently discovered I've been shadowbanned, with zero idea why. Appeals vanish into the void without an answer... So I can read, but not participate. Feels pretty hostile towards users. Maybe they're doing me a favor?

Put your Lemmy app in the spot of wherever your Reddit app is. Make the Reddit app take much more effort to get to. I used to have mine on my home screen so it is one click to get to it after unlocking. Now that's where my Lemmy app is and RedReader is in a folder off to the side. (I suppose I could go one step further and just remove the Reddit app from the home screen folder.) I end up checking Lemmy first now.

The nice part is that Lemmy is getting big enough that I end up seeing a lot of the same news when I run out of content on Lemmy (start getting into more obscure posts) as when I switch to Reddit. So I find myself thinking "I've already seen that" so it makes the Reddit app feel more "stale" and easier to leave.

same, i recently used reddit for niche content on it, and i definitely stayed off using it, an djust browse it most of the time. only of matter of time before they get rid of old reddit completely, they just are biding thier time in trying to bypass the extensions that allows you to view old reddit, and on mobile. on mobile i use sink it , so old reddit works properly on a phone(no need to zoom, it automatically resizes the texts/pics). reddit started to force automatic refreshing to the top of the pages even in old reddit. i dont participate in the large subs, because of previous of banning activities on those subs. i save lemmy content, however little there is, for later in the day.

My experience has been very different, especially yesterday. i automatically block those people on lemmy, sorry but a political statement based on opinion and attitude is an immediately block. as is ones that make very condescending ones.

blocking on reddit seems futile, since alot of them are bots/propaganda bots, theres for every troll blocked, another 10 pops up. also reddit stops blocking thier comments if you go over 1000 users. it only works if its a small subreddit. politics, news, sports, movies, ask reddit,,,etc impossible to block them all.

My experience with reddit is similar to other folks here. I got permbanned in 2024 and then again in 2025, started going on Lemmy but lurked on reddit via third party app Infinity until earlier this year when reddit killed my API key. Since I refuse to use reddits hot garbage ad-riddled app, I uninstalled infinity and never went back.

i used continum and redlib, but the UI doesnt really jive with me yet. so i use extension on mobile firefox to force it into old reddit, and to make it work properly on a phone. reddit is starting to become aware of this too, as i notice everytime i backspaced, it forces you back to the top of the page.

I still look at reddit sometimes on my computer. But I just never installed their app on my phone. Reddit... really sucks now. Idk if it has gotten way more reactionary or if I'm just more aware of it. Tons of chuds, recycled posts, tons of astroturfing, bad comment sections. I don't miss it in its current state.

the APP is the one thing reddit wants you to be on, they can datamine you more effectively. they have been doing everything they can to force people on the phone to use the app. login popups, partially disabling old reddit, forcing the page refresh if you try to backspace.

Reddit is full of bots who's mission is to keep you outraged and angry, there by keeping you engaged and locked on. Of course you're going to feel agitated. I left cold turkey and replaced my addiction with Lemmy, people here are nicer and fewer bots.

funny you mention the botting, it gotten so bad, that reddit lost tons of traffic due to AI posting it, and google not renewing thier contract reddit to train thier AI, OPENAI/CHATGPT is steering away from it temporarily. not much data to mine, if its all AI anyways. and this partially the result of the overbanning they had done last year. wiped hordes of accounts per user.

i think reddit keeps track of down/upvoting, but they dont seem to heavy into banning people for that, unless you are botting with it.

Step one is to never log in to Reddit again. Just lurk. You still get access, but your community is here.

i think most people are lurking right now on reddit, because of banning potential, and this is the result of reddit banning and losing users that they are desperate now.

It is jivwr here somehow. To be fair, the only thing that keeps my account alive on reddit is troubleshooting issues. There is a treasure trove of information on reddit about some technical issues or ideas that I usually seek solutions to.

Here, much less. I did try to make posts and seek for help or hints but it seems quite dead so far. Discourse is little to none.

But as a social media replacement to reddit, lemmy is pretty good. Plenty of posts off different instances make up my feed with random news, ideas, funny posts and discussions.

I just joined "thelemmy.club" today! I am trying out lemmy because at Reddit, for no reason given to me, I am shadow banned (if it is the proper term for it). Whenever I post a new topic, even on issues that may help other users in the future, my post is immediately removed/deleted by the "Reddit filters...". And, I get "Rate limit exceeded..." when I reply to comments within a few minute after my successful reply. I don't know! I hope I will find the communities here in thelemmy.club those subs that I joined in on Reddit - that would be nice.

No content is better than crap content, and I can spend that time doing something else and not just wasting the same amount of time on lemmy.

I still have a throwaway account for one off comments/posts for some really niche stuff where I'm looking for info, otherwise the major subs I used to hang around in were either lobotomized or cracked apart with new mods or spam bots.

I basically only use it for modding a few communities I created. I have limited my scrolling and I'm scaling back my comments.

Also, I moved the Reddit icon over on my phone and put the Voyager icon there. Helps with the muscle memory.

Uninstall any apps for Reddit and decide that you are not ok with the data harvesting those apps do in you phone. Then set your browser to auto delete Reddit cookies. You will soon find yourself so annoyed using their webpage, that you will stop. Allow yourself to be subjected to their incessant cookie whining and dark patterns and hostile design, intended to push you to install their app.

or skip to account delete and never go there again.

i think most people are lurking on reddit now, most of them said they did it to avoid the bannings. hence why reddits is try to force people to use the app. The HORRID UI on new reddit on the browser on mobile is kinda unusable, i use an extensions, to force it to old reddit and make it properly resize on a mobile phone.

same here, i made an acc again recently, after waiting a year+ from last years ban, i rarely go on it for my niche content. Major subs are heavily politicized and monitored by the filters, i avoid those.

Lemmy definately has less content, but it feels like the old internet. People are just friendlier here. My biggest recommendation is to post/comment a lot; I think things like that really help the platform grow. I can honestly say I've never received any negative feedback here, so its a pretty safe space.

Late to the party, but I just slowly used Lemmy more. Almost kinda made myself. It slowly kinda became a habit and after a week, I signed out of Reddit. I use browser, and for me when I scroll down for more than 10 seconds it stops me and tells me to get the app, effectively making it impossible to use. I have then naturally gravitated towards Lemmy and haven’t used Reddit in like two weeks besides random threads I actually needed to do something.

I think to survive on Lemmy (all social media tbh) you need two things.

One is the ability to disengage when it's no longer fulfilling. I see reports from people saying they are being harassed by someone in a thread and I can't help but wonder why they didn't stop replying to the bad faith comment about 17 replies earlier.

The second is that you should block what you don't want to see. Block communities where you know you'll never be interested. Block users who reply in bad faith. Block instances where you see bad faith commenters a lot.

Do these two things, and comment a lot, and I think you end up with a much better experience.

Funny enough, I made a post in another community specifically about blocking. On the one hand I agree with you as for the curated experience, on the other hand echo chambers are unhealthy.

Its a very difficult balance to strike. Thus far I have only blocked communities which have zero bearing in my life - languages I don't speak, kinks I simply don't share, etc. However, blocking individuals is something I frankly hesitate to do because even the literal worst POV out there is useful; its good to know where the extremes lie and to be prepared for that level of madness.

At least, that's my opinion. And thankfully I find so far that even the most absurd hot take that I disagree with wildly on this site is still more palatable to me than half the crap that was out there on reddit before I left. And even those with snark are often kinder about it than reddit, I find.

In fact, I seem to be the barely-palatable-hot-take here as often as not, but given upvotes are entirely meaningless in all ways and especially to my actual daily life I generally am not bothered by it.

My suggestion is to block bad faith participants. There are lots of conversations I have with people who disagree with me and probably can't be convinced otherwise, but they are still enjoyable conversations if they are had in good faith.

To be honest I don't block that many users, I am able to spot bad faith participants and not reply to them, and if they reply to me I don't reply back. But if people are having trouble with the argumentative minority of Lemmy, I think blocking them is important. There's no point being here if you're not enjoying it.

In my case, I was forced to leave Reddit because at one point, I was not able to post or reply in any of my joined subs! I didn't know why I was band because there was no communication from any mods or the Reddit dictators. I deleted my account because there was no use of staying if I was banned. I asked my favorite AI if there is a Reddit substitute and it pointed my Lemmy. So I'm here!

Then I made a comment about a tiktok instigator that should apologize to trees for wasting the oxygen they produce and got all my accounts permabanned. But they'll allow bot farms to keep spreading hate and fake news to get a rise from their fellow cultists. We're in the upside down world

I second this so hard, I remember being a kid and going on the Ask.com forums... it was really special how tight the circle felt. I could just see the same users again and again, and you never ran into slurs or offensive comments just because of how well we all knew each other. It was like a town

Now me, I've been sitewide banned from Reddit for some ban evasion bullshit that I didn't even do, and I'm still sad about that. But here, I'm getting that same feeling back after having learned long ago that Ask.com was history
