They don't have high reliability, no more so than any other mainstream brand. They retain their value because it's Apple, who rarely put sales on, oh and they are fashion pieces.
I heard Samsung started offering 7 years of support awhile back. Only took them 15 years. iPhones a fashion piece? Do people actually believe this lmao? No adult gives a shit what phone you have. Unless you’re a kid in grade school or just immature maybe. In my experience, hardline opinions on the subject tend to come mostly from keyboard warriors and insecure teenagers. |

I think the "you must have all the latest updates or you're a security risk" thing is a bit overblown, possibly by the companies themselves who want to make sure you install all their latest spyware.
I can promise you it isn’t. Security updates on a device that’s connected to the internet at all times is very important. |

It's correct. Planned obsolescence was a big problem, but it isnt anymore. Phones have software support for 7 years. I have had my current phone for nearly 4 years and it runs as fast as the day I bought it. I will take it through next year and probably the one after. We kind of peaked with smartphones already. In the last 5 years, there hasnt been many big upgrades that people need. Phones are...
my previous phone was an extremely frustrating cheap piece of shit that barely had two years of updates. and i got it in 2024 moto g 5g 2024 in case anyone was wondering |

You are not supposed to buy phones yearly, think of new models as refreshes for people in the market at that time. Phones are insanely good now and can easily last 5+ years. You don't need to upgrade!
I have mostly upgraded every 2 years. This year I didn’t need to, but I’m a huge power user and my phone would barely last a full day of me playing games and watching videos and being online. My battery capacity was at 89%, so 5% a year is expected for a power user. I just regularly charge it at my office desk, and I’m fine. I upgraded this year because they claim it’s 40% better battery life. I can definitely feel is already. But I was also able to give my old phone to my GF, which she last upgraded in 2022, so it was more of a dual upgrade for both of us. |

And how many of those updates are security updates? And how many of those security updates are remote code execution exploits? |

That's so far from true I'm not even sure how to begin explaining it to you 🤦🏻
That might be, but the hardware is designed to wear out. They start to degrade after a few months, a year if you're lucky.
Yeah, probably. If you weren't wrong about planned obsolescence, I would probably still have the one I got before this one or the one before that.
Yeah, I'm definitely sold on the phone itself. What makes me still hesitate is compatibility issues with certain apps that are absolutely essential to function in modern society and demand "genuine" (read: inside the corporate control of Google or Apple) hardware 😮💨 |

Phones are insanely good now Correct and can easily last 5+ years Incorrect. Ever heard of planned obsolescence? They've got that dystopian bullshit down to an exact science now and phones are one of the most affected product groups. Which is one of the reasons why I'm contemplating getting a Fairphone when this Samsung monstrosity is finally paid off in a couple months.
Idk phones are a lot better these days. My 14 Pro is going very strong. I’m not to 5 years yet, but think it’s got 1-2 years left easily, maybe more. The battery is definitely not as good as new, but it easily lasts a day, which is all you really need. And no complaints about performance either. Honestly there’s nothing about the new phones that appeals to me. |

All you people talking android vs iphone and I'm just sitting here wondering when everyone's gonna switch to LoRa/meshtastic so we can stop paying for service.
Not gonna happen for a long while. Even in the best of situations it is impossible to make connection across the pond, and you’ll run into many issues even in the mainland US where there is just too much land to cover properly. You’ve got limited hops, and the land masses of the US tend to be a major issue. On top of that, it’s impossible to actually use it as anything more than texting that may never be received by your target. Give it a few years and maybe but for now it’s mostly a novelty in my book. |

“Phones” is debatable. Some do, many don’t. iPhone does typically, admittedly, but Samsung? If you don’t have a flagship phone, you’re liable to get only security updates in 4 or so years. |

most iphones I’ve ever had lasted more than 5 years. I hand them down to my children and MIL without issue. the only that didn’t was my first one , a 4s |

And Apple update even old iOS devices. I have a 14 year old iPad that still gets security updates on iOS 12. |

That may be true but unfortunately everyone on lemmy are as anti iPhone as they are anti fascists. I also have an iPhone 11 with no issues but apparently that being a fact is not welcomed on the platform which is very silly.
To be fair many on Lemmy are very much pro-fascism too. |

Many non-flagship devices from leading brands offer 5 years of security updates. Software support has only got better over the last few years with more and more offering longer support. Obviously if you want the longest support, you want something like a Fairphone, Pixel, Samsung Galaxy S or iPhone. |

What county do you live in? The ones made for the US can't replace batteries. And no iPhone don't hold value because they are the most reliable. They hold value because dick riders are too busy deep throating apple to look around. At one point it was so bad Apple users were discriminating because of text bubble colors. Nevermind the fact that Apple refused to update beyond basic SMS and that al...
I live in the US. I’ve replaced the batteries on two of my iPhones when they lost efficiency or the battery went bad. I replaced the camera module on my iPhone13 when the flash Led broke because of a shitty lens cover. In both instances I watched a YouTube video and did it, it’s not that hard. The text statement is kind of true several years ago, it sucked having Android users in group chats because iPhone text features make it easy to share images and video with other iPhones. Text protocols changed years ago between IOS and Android and it is a non issue. I used android for years, I had the OG Droid. There is nothing wrong with other smart phone brands but there is very little differentiating top phones anymore. |
