That was Spielberg not George.

Not OP but while Spielberg directed Last Crusade, the film was written by Jeffrey Boam, George Lucas, and Menno Meyjes. Lucas clearly had a strong influence beyond just the writing as well, judging by things like the R2D2 hidden in the hieroglyphics in the first movie and the Club Obi Wan in the second.

Directed by Spielberg but George co-wrote and actually created the idea for the character too.

He had Indiana Jones LITERALLY ride off into the sunset at the end of the third movie. The most over the top cliche thing for a hero to do. And he dragged him back to make another one about aliens. >:( George couldn't write a good "fall from grace " story for Anakin cuz he was living his own.

I'm okay with that for Indiana Jones, because Indiana Jones is Cliche Adventure Man. There have been a lot of Cliche Adventures Man, and Indiana Jones is the Cliche Adventure Man with the highest production value. When Indiana Jones throws a mook off a rope bridge, the filming dummy has electrically powered flailing arms. He punches the bad guy and gets the girl in the end. It's great!

Right, but George took that away from Indiana Jones. They had him ride off into the sunset, live happily ever after, but no. He was a bankable IP and they wanted more money, despite how it would ruin the ending they already gave to the character

I'm okay with more Indiana Jones being made, because it's an adventure serial. My problem was it wasn't done well.

I would happily trade everything Disney Star Wars in exchange for another Lucas trilogy.

I think Lucas really excelled when he was pushing against the limits of technology and budget and those limits really held him or n a sweet spot for story telling he would naturally push himself out of.

Anything he makes now would be like the prequels.

And Spielberg has to reel in GL during Crystal Skull, yet even I thought I was on acid during that fucking movie

I don't think Georgie would have accidentally told a story about how liberal democracy invariably creates the conditions for fascism though, or how even when the good guys beat the first wave it will do nothing to address the systemic flaws that created it, trapping the culture in a cycle of fascist attacks and ever consolidating wealth.

Even with a mystical order of Zen knights that gets actual guidance from the collective consciousness of life itself making the process take a thousand generations instead of ten.

Watch Rogue One then Andor. What is it with Star Wars people always going backwards? Joking aside, Andor is absolutely one of the top series of all time, no matter the category. It is excellently done. Also, joking aside..... I liked Rogue One alright when it came out, but it's jarring to watch after Andor imho.

Serious answer: because the point of a prequel is that you have the knowledge of what comes later from having seen the precursor movie(s).

Not everyone was born before the 80's in order to experience this becoming a known fact... And if it's documented, not everyone will look shit like that up, because how would you know to look that up.

Other people than yourself can know more, or know less, than you. A certain number of years after birth, most children learn this fact. 😜

Honestly, anything he would have made would have been better than the dumpster fire that was the sequel trilogy.

Am I the only one on planet earth that sort of enjoys the prequel movies?

You turn off your brain and ignore all the plot holes and silliness and cheesiness, just like any other Star Wars content, including the first movies.

It's not that serious lol. It's not made to be that serious.

I can't fucking stand Andor, will never understand why such a terrible show gets praise. Gave up after the Heist Arc, which was nothing but a bunch of unlikable twats bitching that Cassian Andor wasn't one of the cool kids, then they do a long ass marching scene, then they all die. I should have liked their deaths because of how truly disgusting they were, but honestly I felt nothing.

Lucky Luke rides off into the sunset in every movie. Doesn't mean that is the end of him.

It signals the end of the movie, not the end of the character.

Same. I never got past the first half of the season just because of how boring it was. Everything is slow and nothing happens.

The ending could be amazing, but I am not going to bother if I have to claw myself to it. I got better shows to watch.

Imagine 3 more prequel-quality movies 🤮

Is there someone holding a gun to your head to force you to watch them?

I never got this attitude. It is okay to not be the target demographic. Even if you were it before.

More movies = better. Even if they are shit. They do not take away anything from the movies you do enjoy.

I agree the Phantom Menace is one of the worst Star Wars movies ever. Much worse than the sequels. But even that is still an enjoyable movie compared to say Twilight.

I expected to get down voted into oblivion. Instead I find a kindred spirit. That's good.

Andor did nothing but waste my time and the fanbase is incredibly toxic, unable to accept any criticism of the show without resorting to insults about how "Oh you can't pay attention without lightsaber fights."

Nothing happens in this show. I really tried to pay attention but the dead air had me reaching for my phone.

Just 30 plus minutes of people complaining about Andor being on their team and doing nothing to endear me to them. One of them wrote a book... woo...

And on the episode with the heist actually happening, it opens with fifteen minutes of marching. No dialogue, nothing of note. Just marching. Why?

And the show doesn't even seem to be made by someone who actually likes Star Wars. Why do they have realistic guns? Why are there dudes in military uniforms instead of Stormtroopers? Are they embarrassed by Star Wars imagery?

Andor is a snoozefest that excells at wasting the audience's time. I wouldn't mind the talking scenes if people talked about anything of substance, but it's always Empire Bad. I get Empire Bad, it's the premise of the setting. I don't need to be reminded Empire Bad.

I'm tired of hearing how Rey is a Mary Sue when there's no real proof of that.

"OMG she can fly the Millenium Falcon."

Not very well, she even damages it and has to get Han to fix it.

"She beat Kylo Ren in a saber fight!"

No she barely came to a draw against a man trying his damndest not to bleed out from a Bowcaster shot.

If Rey was a guy, half of the complaints about the sequels wouldn't exist.

Rise of Skywalker? Not on your life

Yeah I blame the fans. They bitched about having their expectations subverted in Last Jedi and Rey not being a Skywalker... so the next movie gives her an important lineage and makes her an honorary Skywalker and suddenly giving fans what they ask for is a bad thing.

The only thing wrong with Rise of Skywalker are Poe and Finn getting girlfriends out of nowhere in a blatant attempt to stop the fans from shipping them... (ironically in a movie with a gay kiss... a blink and you miss gay kiss admittedly) well that and Chewbaca's fake out death.

Rey is simply not a compelling character. This has nothing to do with “omg woman protagonist”. People loved Leia.

Rey bumbles along randomly. And then randomly gains super jedi powers in an almost completely unmotivated way. There is no compelling story arc.

I’m not sure I agree with the proposition that the prequels are far better than the Disney movies.

Phantom menace had some serious pacing and tone issues. The other two were better but I don’t j ow I’d say they are far better than Disney. They held to the cannon way more but that was its own weakness in the core plot which really kept them from being entirely interesting.

I will say the Disney movies are much better paced than the prequels. Well that’s not true that one slow space chase with the side quest on planets was a major drag. The first Disney movie was better paced than the prequels.

One day people will come around on the sequels like they did for the prequels.

I've ranted about this too many times but I think this is a classic shallow take. The prequels didn't have a resurgence in appreciation because people grew up with them and therefore found them good, they just over time were judged by their merits instead of their expectations. I think if someone watched Episode 1 cold, they'd find one of the better Scifi films out there. I don't think there's been a cooler, more fast paced, multipart fight in cinema than the end of the phantom menace. Episode 2 has some terribly rough dialogue and pacing and the romance plot arc but it undeniably has style and flair and aura that few scifi films have been able to match. The chrome ships of Naboo... Fuck I'm ranting again.

The prequels are not what the original generation wanted from star wars films. They are however good, if not flawed films, that expand the world, have an artistic vision, and have a cohesive underlying story they're trying to tell. It's not the meme's that keep the movies alive it's the world and the world is 100% better off for having the prequels in them.

The sequels are the complete opposite. They're bad films or at best lazy okay films, that shrink the world while ruining the past lore, that do not have an artistic vision, that do not have an underlying story they're trying to tell. There is no rise of fascism through a failing democracy level of artistry, there is no pure heroes falling to corruption due to beaucracy and a loss of their original purpose, etc. There isn't even a vibe or an aesthetic that is worth pursuing in the sequels in my opinion - and why that is I don't really know, because I believe a lot of horribly talented people put their hearts into the appearance of the sequels but there's nothing that comes to mind that feels like it fits the vibe and is entirely new. But that's subjective. What's not subjective is that they shrunk the world, reversed the progress, contradicted the lore, and failed to provide new fertile ground for stories. I don't think someone walks away from any of the sequels individually or collectively and is inspired to tell new star wars stories where as the originals and the prequels all had that power.

You're saying someone can't end a character's story by LITERALLY having them ride off into the sunset? Kind of an odd rule.

And if you think losing a hand and watching your friend get kidnapped is a happy ending akin to "riding off into the sunset" then you just have a fundamental misunderstanding of movies in general.

Pretty sure the clones do attack the robots at the end of ep 2? And a large part of the plot is Obi-Wan finding out the enemy was raising said army of clones, so that was the expected threat. The Jedi just walked in and said yeah that's mine yoink.

Pandering to fans is IMO a mistake by the creators, unless they can do so without compromising their vision. Like I think Lucas made a mistake pandering to the Jar Jar hate. No idea whether he was intended to be Plaguis or some other dark horse but I think it's pretty clear from Episode I that there was more to that character than just providing childish comic relief. I wish he hadn't caved to the pressure and stuck with whatever he had originally intended.

The prequels aren't better than the sequels. They've just been made into memes

Sequel trilogy was bad and "Duel of Fates" with Anakin and Obi wan is still a top tier scene. Even if you take out all the memes. Hell there's many good scenes in the prequels. It's not perfect though, Ep 1 specifically has way too much politics of trade wars and federation drama.

Can't really remember any good battles or fights from any of the three sequel movies.

Completely ignoring the chud "mary sue" or "black guy" complaints.... The biggest problem was the lack of direction.

One writer wanted Rey to have a linked lineage and be "the chosen one" while the other wanted to take a different approach and have a "everyone can be a hero and does not have to be chosen." Each movie the other writer retconed what the other set up.

  • The whole dagger matching the crash site was ass
  • The Chewbacca death fake out was stupid
  • General hux was absolutely wasted
  • The sith language corrupting c3po only for that to be a fake out was ass
  • rey was training to duel lightsaber weild via her staff combat and that was wasted. ,(I think Duel of Fates would have been less hated)
  • no explanation on how Maz Kanta got Luke's lightsaber
  • Palpatine coming back with no explanation
  • sith holocron being a Mcguffin
  • the ending of Rise of Skywalker. What the hell was that
  • Mara Jade erasure. Luke deserved a baddie.

I thought force awakens was okay
The last Jedi wasn't great
Rise of Skywalker is unwatchable
