What can an AI do for our fridge? I asked myself as I swiped my credit card for a multi thousand dollar purchase. Surely it must do something. Surely this must be an improvement on a dumb box that keeps things cold. I want to talk to my dumb box that keeps things cold, this is certainly a good idea.

I'm assuming that the AI fridge helps you skip the ads that your IoT smart fridge plays?

I've owned this dryer for 5 years and had to run a second dry cycle once because a massive sleeping bag was in with some clothes and it was still slightly damp. But please, continue. I'd love for some dipshit on the Internet to tell me how my own appliances work.

Congratulations, I've used several and none have been worth a shit.

The difference is almost ALL appliances built today are designed to die around the time the warranty expires. And, yes, I realize that's been a trope for a long time, but now it's far more true than it used to be. It used to be a joke, because it happened rarely, now it's not a joke because it happens often. Twenty years from now, there won't be any appliances built today, still running. This i...

Thing is, they don't have to be designed to die, or not directly anyway. As in enginees don't usually sit around figuring out how to make a rubber seal break down at a particular speed. The product is just pushed to the absolute limits of the materials - thinnest, cheapest, fastest, and only rolled back if it widely fails and costs the manufacturer more to replace.
I guess the method doesn't really matter when the end result is the same.

What is the benifit of AI in devices like fridges, washing machines and dish washers? We've had these devices for years now, even a 40 year old machine works flawlessly, just uses a bit excessive power. A fridge needs to cool, a washing machine needs to clean. They don't need to do anything else, and they did this perfectly when we didn't have AI. So to my understanding, AI implemented into the...

There is desire and benefit in these things being smart devices and AI is just the stupid label slapped on every smart device after 2024. A benefit of a smart washer is that it can, theoretically, do a more thorough and more efficient job of washing various amounts, sizes, thicknesses, and materials in the load by measuring water usage, balance, weight, and output water condition. A smart fridge can, theoretically, do some lofty things that aren't nearly as desired as just being a media hub. Streaming videos, reordering groceries on Amazon, displaying recipes, displaying weather, displaying pictures, etc - really mor elike a tablet stuck to the fridge.

Implementation of said benefits is a different story. They are obviously consumer surveillance devices with sales pitches to make them "the best" faster than the competition.

Never buy Samsung appliances.

The refrigerators are truly terrible.

All their other appliances are perfectly fine. Just don't connect them to the internet. In fact, don't connect any of your appliances to the internet. Ever.

I had a client who bought a house with a Whirlpool double oven that connected to the internet, and it locked itself out because it thought the oven had been stolen.

I had to replace the control panel. It cost $1,100.

Is there some sort of epidemic of people stealing double ovens from homes? Why does a double oven need a touchscreen and a Wi-Fi connection? It even has a sensor for the ambient temperature in the kitchen.

An oven is supposed to do one thing: heat your food. That's it. It shouldn't be able to prepare your teenager for the SATs.

Why was it even able to fail that way to begin with? It's not like the functional software in a refrigerator needs to be updated that often at all. You'd think that if the update fails catastrophically, it would fall back to a basic operating mode like a car does. Do they have a renting system or something in the works that's meant to let them shut the device remotely?

The update may have made changes to the underlying kernal, to fix unimportant bugs identified by AI - that would brick the whole thing.

Vibe coding for the win !

They just have to add useless shit into something like a fridge and make everything "smart". The profit margins must be so slim on any kind of standard house appliance. They can't just seel a fridge that just keeps your food cold, isn't too expensive, noisy, etc... because most of the offer that and they need this summers buzzword to stand out, or even to please the investors.

The consumer buys that shit though.

We can create demand for normal stuff. "Do you have one without AI? I do not want AI." Retailers take note.

You'd think so!

Unfortunately it just permanently listens to everything going on in your house, tracks every family member's sleep cycles, eating habits, evaluates your household income based on how often it is restocked and what your brand loyalties are, then feeds all that information to a third party advertising company who sell it to the highest bidder and split the profits with smasnug before showing everyone in the home exactly the right ads to manipulate them into buying more slop.

A friend of mine had a smart washing machine with AI installed in his building as the previous machine died just after warenty. He used it once but his clothes came out dirty. He now keeps using the old machine next to it, which is roughly 30 years old, as that machine properly cleans his clothes.
Why the fuck do I need to know the weather when I grab some yoghert. I have a computer in my pocket which can do everything already. I don't like to see ads whenever I grab something out of my fridge. I prefer my fridge to live longer than 3 years, and just cool things. Why the fuck would I pay more to give it a screen, then to pay monthly not to see fucking ads.

Yup. I was always grappling with form/ function and balance that benefit the user. Seems itโ€™s now ennshittification and subscription are the drivers. I can see the brief now. Must have at least one subscription feature Should make the user mad Every aspect should have control but isโ€ฆ Extra bonus if does not ever en fulfil its purpose.

And don't grey out or hide any of the subscription features, just have it not work, and let them wonder what the fuck is happening. And remove the map link. We don't want them just, like, clicking that so they can get here easily. And make sure ads load as they scroll, so it keeps moving the page. That should happen seventeen times.

If I ever find myself in a stable living environment, I think I'll just buy a couple of cheap chest freezers and set one of them as a fridge.

Put a fan heater in one and strap an old HP touchpad to the side. Should be about the same experience as a samsung fridge

"pay double for smart version, then get fucked."

Previously it was "pay double for same quality but more popular brand". How far advertising has progressed that people sign up for this willingly.

It is always interesting to see that this scumbag corporate behavior is only made possible by the people handing them over money.

It is the same with advertising, if i didnt know any better it appears like people want advertisements all the time.

We, the people, are always outraged. However, we, the people, also arent willing to do anything about it. The power is in our hands.

Well, bad news fridges still won't last long and it has nothing to do with Ai or smart features. The industry has downsized the cooling systems for efficiency and environmental factors while making things quieter. The result is higher duty cycles and insulated system compartments generally leading to shorter compressor lifespan.

But yes, I generally agree. I'm not a smart device customer.

It's a matter of thresholds and quantities. The business doesn't need everybody to consent to its existence. It just needs to raise enough money to continue existing. And it only needs to continue existing long enough to gobble up the competition so the choice can't be made between them and an alternative retailer the choice must be instead made between getting the thing from them or not getting the thing.

Plenty of us can opt out of patronizing these institutions but that doesn't Force change. That's what government is for.

We aren't going to be able to vote with our wallets hard enough to change business practices that are abusive and toxic. We're going to need the government to do that. That's a substantial part of its job.

These consumers paid for a product that was very clearly shit the moment they attached AI or 'smart' branding to it.

This is a reminder that, while they are not all equally as responsible as these corporations; the consumer is just as much a part of the problem.

I agree. I aggressively abstain from devices that can spy on me. But the pressure to cave mounts more and more as the monopolies do their best to leave us no choice. I don't think I could buy a new car that does not use the cell network to transmit all my data back to the manufacture for example. Even when it comes to just basic activities like going to a sporting event or booking a campsite I'm often forced to either use my phone or not go at all.

Now being serious, and not reading about it, my best guess would be automated invertory ledger. Looking what you take and in what quantities, what you put in etc. and holding that. Coupled with you marking what shit should not go "out of stock", fridge then can inform you if last piece is taken via on-door screen or an app.

Like, ding dong, Lizzy took last piece of "fuck my life cheese". xD

That could be the best for ADHD folks, lol

Possibly.
Also I imagine the rich class (who dont cook themselves, be honest) like their fridge to keep itself stocked with sparkling water, charcuterie cheese and cocktail mixers itself.

I hope for $3000 it has a digital clock on the door. I mean, what's the point in living if my fridge isn't an alarm clock?

probably it uses the internet to sync with the time zone.

i think the only way to have this is if you actually build it yourself from some kind of open source diy kit, because no company would ever sell something like this unless it could turn it into a subscription that will brick itself if you stop paying >.<

I can only think of one good reason, and only for a refrigerator: Fridges could tell you what's inside without opening them and order shit for you automatically when low on something.

But that would require the AI to not suck complete ass at doing those things. You're better off with just making the door see through and ordering shit when you see something low with your own eyeballs.

Ah yes, that would work great when you eat every day exactly the same. Also, telling you what's inside without opening the door is a major improvement. I mean, you could pull a muscle opening the door. And it would save you a lot of time. The screen uses a lot more pwoerr though, but the extra money it costs per year is worth it when you have to open the door less.
