Almost every issue I have right now goes back to billionaires, fascism, or capitalism. The last two years have been the most difficult of my life so far, and literally existential. I just nearly avoided statelessness and now I can't legally work following a layoff, so I've been living off of savings

It is depressing how much billionaires and those aligned with them are ruining what the world could be. It is economically possible to feed and house everyone without having to work anyone to death, but society refuses to organize itself that way because the fucks in charge just don't want to

That's why they're racing to build bunkers and sniper drone nests before people realize that it's that time again

On the bright side, I feel like the majority of the world is gradually uniting against Trump

Yeah, but why?

We're only narrowly reaching a "70% dislike" and some 20% of that doesn't care about how he uniltaterally, illogically slaughtered innocent people across half the world - they're just looking at the price on their gas pump. The moment any empathetic, reasonable person fails to secure an oil pipeline, or, god forbid, encourages electric vehicle alternatives, they'll rage about taxes and oil again.

2020 should've told me people could change. 2024 showed they didn't.

Basically, I don’t believe you. I guess I believe you believe this. Billionaires are intricately and dominantly involved with late-stage capitalism, which is making all our lives worse in countless ways. If they did indeed disappear and weren't quickly replaced, then at least there's a chance better legislation and regulatory structures could be firmed up to slow future billionaires down. The c...

(I was away from Lemmy for a bit, sorry for the late reply)

They aren't, though. There's hundred millionares and so on, and then the ordinary "upper middle class" people who, collectively, actually own most of the capital.

And anyway, it's pretty clear nobody in this thread was thinking way far ahead, in a master plan kind of way. It's been pretty revealing; people blame distant abstract things - not just for their poverty, which for poor Lemmings would be at least justifiable - but for their inner ennui, or lack of healthy relationships, or whatever.

The world doesn't suck The world is awesome There are a few handfuls of expansionist narcissistic oligarchs, dictators and uber rich that ruin the experience for everyone else. Seriously, we hang a few dozen very specific guys from the gallows and literally the world would be saved the next day. All of the sudden genocides are over, we can focus fully on stopping climate change, we can form a U...

Well, A lot of people already tried this and they, unfortunately, just took the power from someone and gave it to themself. Nearly all of the revolutions in the history started with the same idea you mentioned. But in the end, they just changed the guy at the top of the people. In example, nikolai to lenin or, to be more precise, aristocracy to communist party.

So, IMO, the problem isn't with someone who holds the power, the problem is with the humanity. We should change people rather than states. And again, you mentioned earlier, there is fckin 8 billion people on this planet and we can't change all of them at the same time. The evolution is something that happens over decades. But we have to, because, if there is only one person besides the remaining 8 billion, that one guy would manipulate people and seize the power again for her/his own pleasure.

TLDR; The world really sucks

Japanese black company bullshit. Removing WFH after telling me it was fine, I can move away, etc. Revoking my side job permission (I sell extra veg that I grow on my small farm). I keep applying to jobs in the EEA and even remote US and Canada jobs. Nothing is biting. No one wants Japanese timezone or dealing with cross-border stuff. Japanese remote jobs are going away more generally, especially for someone like me who's a non-Java (recently, at least) backend-only engineer. There are no local jobs either that are enough to support us. If I did take anything, I wouldn't have any time to look for anything better and have a miserable commute. Due to back and leg issues, there's only so much resembling manual labor I can do.

My previous company did it as well. It's all great in the beginning then management or something changes and they decide to treat employees like shit. Many rely on having a job to keep their visas so they are too scared to try to fight back. I planned to retire here, and maybe it will be better years later, but I desperately want to get to Norway for work. Instantly better working conditions and rights, ability to get PR in 3 years and vote, ability to get citizenship without giving up my existing a few years after that. I don't even want some big relocation package. Just support the visa, get us there with a couple suitcases each, and help us get started (I heard it can take a while for the tax authority and everything to straighten out leading to slow/reduced paychecks at first).

This is the very TL;DR version. There's a lot more shit.
