Neil Stephenson's snowcrash would be interesting.

Seconded, although Mark ruined the concept of the Metaverse. And that sex scene with a 15 year old might need some rewriting. I love the book for its storyline and world building, but certain developments of the past 20 years stains the book.

Speaking of Stephenson, I wonder if Cryptonomicon could work as a TV series. Filming the two time periods without them seeming completely disconnected would be challenging, though.

Hivemind (the production company behind The Witcher) announced an Illuminatus Trilogy series back in 2019, but no updates since then.

Cryptonomicon would be cool, I could see it working on HBO or some other cable company.

The Laundry by Charles Stross

Strong agree! Done right it could run multiple seasons.

Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. But good luck getting any studio on board.

“So you have a fantasy TV show for me?”

“Yes sir, I do.”

“What happens?”

“Dude with leprosy gets run over, goes into a coma, wakes in a fantasy realm.”

“Cool, cool. Then what?”

“He rapes the first person he meets.”

“Oh. I do not like that at all!”

The Riverworld books by Philip Jose Farmer. I think someone tried it before but it was a half-hearted, low budget, nothing of a show.

It could really do with the full $millions per episode, proper actors treatment that Netflix, Amazon, or Apple could bring.

Wheel of time. No, that garbage they tried at Amazon doesn't count.

I used to reread Wheel of Time frequently. I've probably completed the series more than 13 times, because I started reading it in the mid 90s and would reread from the beginning every time a new book was released.

After that Amazon slop, I haven't touched the series since. It was so, so bad. And it had the potential to be so, so good. All the material was right there. All the money was there.

Such a wasted opportunity to have made something amazing.

As a pallet cleanser, here's a fan made version made 10 years ago that is so much more authentic and watchable than Rafe's disaster:

https://youtu.be/myFCGun_c-8

Should have just given them the millions.

The Tapestry Series, by Henry Neff.

It's a kid-becomes-wizard story sort of in the Harry Potter vein, but darker, much better written, and much more complex. Also Henry Neff is a wonderful human being.

World War Z - needs to be done properly tied closely to the book as a short TV series.

The series 'Invasion' did something similar.

The Little Engine that Could. It will be a big budget 10 hour (12 hour extended cut) long epic spanning across three movies, directed by Peter Jackson.

There is a sequence in Dumbo that is a retelling of the Little Engine That Could

Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey-Maturin series should get a big budget event television maxi-series on the order of Game of Thrones. They made the movie Master And Commander, what? A couple decades ago? And it's got one glaring problem: They only made one movie.

Draw the rest of the owl.

The Dark Tower. There is a film of the same name, but it has literally nothing to do with the masterpiece of literature that is the book series. A series would be how it should be done. Seriously, fuck that movie. I know Stephen King always gets screwed by film adaptations, but even Ender’s Game was a more accurate telling of the books. Not even the Ender’s Game books, I mean Ender’s Game was a...

I'd absolutely love it if Star Trek (not Alex Kurtzmen) adapted the Corp of Engineers books. The original ebook series would slot in perfectly with a 20ish episode a year release cycle, and the plots/characters are already developed, you just need to script them out. Each book is a "problem of the week" style story, with that classic Star Trek (not Alex Kurtzmen) style character development, ba...

They're never going back to 20 plus episodes and people need to get over it. The work life balance people endured producing those seasons was unconscionable.

I'm surprised how that hasn't been a thing yet considering how big the story is.

I'm still disappointed they botched the Wheel of Time. Like, right from the very beginning, that started making really questionable choices. I wish they'd do it animated because one, that'd make the magic way cheaper, and two, it'd make it feasible to grapple with the sheer size of the series.

I'm so happy I didn't ruin my childhood memories watching it. It was a tough call at the beginning but I feel thoroughly justified in hindsight.

Squirrel Girl could be good. I think Adrien Tchaikovsky’s book series The Tyrant Philosophers would be awesome. The first book has an insane amount of characters including nearly forgotten gods, monsters, criminals, heroes, and villains. I’d really love to see the Wild Cards (compilation series edited by George RR Martin) get something too. It’s a top-tier take on the supe genre.

An episode exists out there somewhere in some studio vault. Almost had west coast avengers.

After watching Foundation and then reading Foundation… Foundation. It could easily be done as an anthology. And as a recently
Rekindled weeb, it would be fantastic as a well done anime. Really cannot understand what the Apple TV pus thing was going for other than “let’s just tell a copletely different story and co-opt the name. (Man that’s never been done before right?)

I kinda get it, but this one should have been animated from the start. The length and magic make live action really difficult to pull off, and I'm not surprised Amazon didn't manage it.

Saying this as a fan, I really don’t think the DT novels really can be translated into a show or movie series. It’s too contradictory from book to book. King just kept going in different directions with each book. Maybe someone could harmonize it all but I’m not sure that’s really possible. I think it works for books but not to film.

That said, I think a tv series that focused just on young Roland, Gilead, and Midworld-that-was could potentially be fantastic (I am admittedly biased as I that’s the part of the series I love the most - The Gunsligner and Wizard & Glass are my two favorites in the series). I think the graphic novels already provide a solid framework for this. If the show could capture the “post-apocalyptic horror meets spaghetti western meets Lord of the Rings” aesthetic I think it could be a huge hit.

I’d love to see The Dispossessd in film but only if it was made by people who share the same anarchist/communist ideological commitment. If Hollywood tries it you know that part will be taken out, which would take the entire heart and soul out of it.

The Dragonriders of Pern books need adapted.

I'm a fan, but I don't see how they could really make thread scary on screen. In the books it is portrayed as almost some kind of inate fear that can not be denied. But movies can't really pull that off.

i think Against a dark background by Banks could make a fucking amazing series but them I'm 99% sure they would fuck it up and I wouldn't enjoy it.

I really liked The Wool but didn't like Silo at all. Loved HHGTTG and TV series was good but it's just a fairly accurate adaptation, nothing great. The movie was weak. The first Dirk Gently show was mediocre, the second was fairly good but was only loosely based on the books.

I don't get the obsession some people have with specific lores. Good lore alone doesn't make a good show. Many shit shows were based on The Witcher. I would love to see good, deep, layered, hard Sci-Fi show and I don't care what it's based on. Good lore is like 10% of a good show. At the same time good book is good enough in itself, I don't have see it rehashed in a different format.

most dont even stay true to the source material, unless the original writer is on board, even then they can be influenced by executives, like with sandman. with the obvious thing happened with lucifer and death.(not true to the source, only the words were)

invincible is another, with tech jacket, even with the creator on board.

on one hand, series like nutrek just straight up plagiarizes fan novels without giving credit.

Agreed. The underdark portion of his life would make for and excellent TV adaption. HOWEVER I don't trust the current climate of TV production to pull it off properly. In all likelihood, if produced today, it'd end up as a Netflix series (or similar series) where the streaming format would throw off pacing, and after completing a season of sticking to the story, any subsequent seasons would str...

it will be a horrid 8 episode season, with stuff omitted, and peoples changed based on how the execs perceive the audience. and multi year wait in between seasons.

I wish they could finish the Expanse. That was a pretty good adaptation as far as they got, and the books really tie everything very nicely together toward the end (as well as get kind of crazy)

they had problems with one of the actors being DV/Sa-er and they wanted to wait a while since the latest books is a time jump.

I'd like to see The Player of Games adapted. I think it'd work pretty well. Or consider phlebas. The nonlinearity of the other books can make for challenging TV narrative.
