Original title (FR): L’Affaire Marie-Claire (The Marie-Claire Affair)

In 1972, a landmark trial shakes France as young Marie-Claire is prosecuted for having an illegal abortion with the help of her mother and two other defendants. Represented by Gisele Halimi, a feisty and fearless French Tunisian Jewish woman lawyer played by Charlotte Gainsbourg. The women take on the courtroom governed by men. Halimi, shaped by her cultural and Jewish heritage, openly challenges the patriarchy and confronts the system that condemns victims, letting perpetrators walk free. Against all odds, she transforms the condition of women forever, leading to the 1975 Veil Act, which officially decriminalized abortion in France. The real Halimi died in 2020 after a long career stacked with cases that shifted French laws and attitudes about reproductive rights and injustices against women.
