I don't get beer

Since others are posting about the how and not the why:

I don’t like most beers, but the ones I like are refreshing (mainly Almaza the local standard here in Lebanon, a Pilsner if that means anything to anyone). It’s slightly bitter like tea, less so than coffee, and fizzy but not as much as a sugary drink. It complements a lot of foods, doesn’t really get you drunk quickly (I don’t drink to that point), is pretty widely available, and is nice to drink during a chat because it takes a bit of time, kind of like coffee or tea.

Supposedly Almaza is similar to Asahi or Kingfisher from India.

I’ve also enjoyed “interesting” beers but that’s how beer works for me. I’ve had Guinness, it’s interesting, more of a curiosity for me, very bready, I can see myself having it often if it was widely available.

If you’re talking more about the American movie style “buy a 96-pack of canned yellow water and consume half of it while watching American football alone” beer I have no idea what that’s about.

Just think of it as stanky sourdough social beverage. If that doesn’t appeal to you, there you go.

Beer. I hate beer. Oh, I like other alcohols. A nice cider. Some wine. A cocktail. But not beer. And people have tried making me drink so many kinds of beer, from cheap store brands to "No, this isn't like other beer. It's expensive artisinal beer made in the local region that tastes like a whole fruit basket!". No, it still tastes like beer.

I wish I could like beer but I don't either. I love fermenting things, love making sourdough and tepaches, ginger beer too, and would like to try brewing beer but cannot like the taste, and beer breath is also so bad smelling.

Champagne. It tastes of bitter, sour and fizz and because of its stupidly intense carbonation, drinking it needs to be done in tiny little wincing sips, lest it bubble up through your sinuses and come out of your nose. I swear people only pretend to like champage because they believe it's the drink for 'classy' celebrations, so disliking champagne is, in their mind, a 'low class' and ungrateful...

I hesitate to even recommend it because I don't want it widely known but better than any champagne I've had is:

Raventos Blanc Blanc de Blancs Xarel-lo

It's what champagne should be IMO. The gentle fizz, the flavor is perfect, it's gentle and delicious.

Do what I do do. Blame the Italians. I used to not be a fan but when I was in Italy the only water I could find was fizzy water and it was adapt or die. After a couple of days I was a convert. "Flavors" just add variety I could drink it carbonated plain all day every day.

It’s not so much the carbonation I suppose. I like spicy water just as much as the next person but the flavors just taste like you threw up something kinda flavored and now you’re drinking it again.

With that being said I do hope to one day get to Italy so I can try their version. I would imagine it’s much better.

Tequila. It tastes like doing a vodka body shot off a sweaty unwashed taint. No idea how people enjoy it.

Wait until you try gin! It's got eau de sock!

Red wine, dry white wine. Sweet white wine is okay.

If you like sweet wine you should try some "Sturm" (or "young wine"? idk what it is called outside of Austria). It is basically grape juice with a bit of alcohol in it. It is very sweet so it can also be mixed with water.

Beer

You've got to be more specific because there are dozens of types of beers that all taste nothing alike.

Bitter ales, jager Kind of want to do a circle of those in "irish car bomb" format now

Jager is almost exclusively drank as a shot mixed with red bull because of how awful it tastes. I've never seen someone out in public having shots of it by itself.

Wine. No, you’re drinking grapes that are past their expiration and smell awful. I’m not crazy!

I'm italian and I agree with you

Totally agree, I've had some expensive tequila that was pretty good but im talking $200+ for a bottle. Where as bourbon, spending 30-50 dollars on a bottle makes me feel like I'm splurging on the good stuff. Way better taste to cost ratio for me.

I actually don't mind gin. It's not amazing but decent gin is surprisingly cheap too.

My drink of choice is Captain Morgan in green tea. It was done out of necessity many years ago and it turned out to be absolutely delicious.

Root beer. It just tastes like mouthwash.

Same. First time that I went to the us, saw an a&w and ordered a root beer, curious because read enthusiastic things about that.

In the beginning I thought the cashier pranked me with a cup of mouthwash

I usually hear that bitter aftertaste about stevia and monk fruit, but they are natural. Is it the same for those sweeteners as well?

Never had monk fruit, but Stevia leaves a hard licorice/anise after taste in my mouth and I hate anise.

I'd call it cloying. After drinking mt dew or something it feels like my throat is coated with evil

Mt Dew Throwback with real sugar is the bomb!!! And stupidly addictive. The HFCS version is evil.

Agree with this. Even different brands of the same type of beer can taste so different that one is like an angel pissing on your tongue and the other one is just plain piss

That sounds nice! Lightly fermented grape juice. I could also just make some grape juice Kefir

Isn't yogurt the best way to get probiotics?

that too, but i find the probiotic in pill form much more effective. i immediately noticed a difference when taking it, after antibiotic usage.

I might have missed it but did nobody mention Raki? Anise seed flavored...gag....

I love that flavor, though. Licorice candy, aniseed cookies. Sambucca (not alone, too intense. But good in a cocktail). Fennel. Whatever that flavor is called I like it. Mastiha can be good too, I have one by Verino that is lovely.

Stevia is so gross. It ruins anything it touches. Aspartame is ok. Splenda is a migraine trigger.

For coffee, a demitasse spoon of sugar - moderation is the way, or I like a lot of milk no sugar (but that probably ends up with the same amount of sugar from lactose)

For tea, mostly unsweet is fine.

For soda, moderation again but I like the diet version better than the sugared ones. Diet coke is fine and doesn't give me a headache. Once in a while though, not every day. Just when I want something that is nothing.

lol, yeah the tapioca is kind of an acquired taste. Have you tried it with the jellies? they're like soft fruity gummy bears instead. Quite tasty.

I don't like matcha or any traditional tea. Tannins in general taste horrible to me, I think I'm sensitive to them or something. It tastes like dryness and astringent, like I've put a cotton bud in my mouth

For me it's bitter like tea, so a flavored tea switched with survival and mono fruit works out
