That's time and knowledge lost Voting red, 3rd party or not voting is what had pushed us farther right. Voting red, 3rd party or not voting is what had pushed us farther right.

False, and I predicted it in September 2024, when Kamala Harris' entire campaign was a meme about joy. What's driving people to the right is the fact that they don't have the time, energy, or money to do anything other than work three jobs for 100 hours a week and still can't afford to rent an apartment. Blue MAGA has done just as much as Red MAGA to make this our reality, or have you forgotten how Obama stood by while the NYPD brutalized Occupy and declined to prosecute any of the bankers in 2008? (And instead rewarded them.)

Many of these people are old enough to remember when the world wasn't like this, so not only are their lives empty, but they understand what's been taken from them and are hopeless.

The only people who care are DSA's, and Democrats have fought harder against DSA's than they do against Republicans.

Ah yes not voting for harris was a great call thanks for trump again dumbass

You want to know why the dems go after republican voters? Because they actually show up (but still vote for rapists)

If people actually voted for the better of two candidates/ blue no matter who / lesser evil always, we'd never have Republicans and 30 years of them gutting regulations, and lowering quality of life. Instead people get upset dems can fix everything Republicans break in a year and vote them out of power every time.

Not voting, voting 3rd party for someone who won't get more than 10% is what causes this, not those voting dems.

They arent anywhere near perfect, but everyone's lives would be so much better without Bush, Trumps and other republicans in office, especially at local and state levels.

But just remember, realistically we’re voting for nothing to get done. Mango Mussolini will still be sitting on his gold plated throne sending in federal agents to terrorize people, abusing the law and enriching himself and his friends and family. What we’re hoping for is a Congress that will no longer accept this behavior. That will start reclaiming its constitutional authority and enforcing c...

When what's currently happening is "a lot of bad things getting done", "nothing getting done" is an improvement.

Sure, I already did "other stuff" by making this post, thanks for commenting and continuing the discussion. I also posted in the Illinois subreddit the first day that people could register to vote by mail.

I think you're slightly naive in thinking shame effects them at all. We've had 6 years of this, it doesn't.

Ok. But not voting will make it all worse. So...like OP said........

This is not what i meant. I said that even if you vote, the restructuring of the world has started, and your elections won't change that anymore. I fully advocate for voting to get this crony administration kicked out, but the place of the US in the world that it had before has been not only left empty, but it has been removed alltogether.

Meh, people’s memory is short. After four or eight years of another Barack Obama type, the world will being seeing us in that light again. America will continue to be an economic and cultural powerhouse, because the rest of you are, by comparison, so listless and unproductive. Only China can compete economically, but they have zero cultural motion.

We are not economically as powerful as the US, but that is mainly caused by decades of the petrodollar. The hostility versus science in general in the US has reached a new height, which already caused a massive brain drain. The damage to federal institutions will take decades to fix if y'all ever get together long enough to even start doing so, and the next "dear leader" in that timeframe can wreck any progress you made to recuperation what you've lost.

Your countries voting decisions have destroyed trust into your democratic nature and into how well your institutions are equipped to deal with a traitor like Trump (hint: they aren't, not one bit, and it has been this way since Nixon and Reagan). The worst damage that has been dealt are the attacks on NATO and the absolute disregard for the territorial integrity of your allies. This is something we CAN'T forget, because it means you left behind the structure that gave your place in the world in the first place: a strong military and economic pact between the US and Europe.

The issues shown up by Trump do not go away when he goes away. Europe in general places a lot of importance into stability between neighbours, thanks to the permanent state of war we have been in for most of our history.

The USA isn't stable, and it won't without it being the result of a civil war, thanks to your civic religion.

The problem is that many people have learned that their life isn't meaningfully made better no matter which side they vote for, so yes, a lot of people do not vote because there is effectively no point for them to miss a day of work. (Especially now.)

I agree with your sentiment, but it wont stop the US from falling behind. The damage has been done, the US is not trustworthy anymore, and this will not change just because Trump becomes a lame duck. We, the other countries in this world, cannot put our trust in another country that might change allegiance every few years. Trump is not a cause, he is a symptom of a deeply rotten, racist and big...

Without knowing what country you’re from, I can still guarantee that a shift towards the right wing fascist movement is a global problem. Whatever is happening in the US can easily happen elsewhere, and in some cases, has already started in Europe.

You might want to hold off a few more weeks before attempting to predict the future. MAGA is crashing and burning fast right now.

As for democracy itself, it’s looking like it’s going to survive here. Trump and co. don’t have the competency or work ethic for a real takeover. When they’re finally out (coming soon), yes, we need more laws and fewer “norms,” and I think Democrats have finally gotten that message in a way that the Biden administration failed to.

Regarding NATO, the EU, etc., you’re really underestimating how short memories can be and how fast perceptions change. The EU would be relieved and eager to accept a sane, normal America again. They don’t want to spend money they don’t have on defense, and they can’t coordinate for shit when it comes to threat response. Their failure in Ukraine is just as shameful as ours.

The brain drain issue is real and sad, but like tourism, it can and will reverse just as quickly.

Of course there will be permanent damage to America from the Trump era, but it’s almost over and it wasn’t actually catastrophic in the sense of “America is on an inevitable trajectory of permanent decline” the way some ML and anarchist commenters on Lemmy would like to believe. Trends can be reversed, and when this one is, America will still be starting from the strongest position in the world.

MAGA is just one expression of the rot that has accumulated. The Tea Party also crashed and burned, and then simply transmuted into MAGA, and the next populist rat catcher in the fangs of the billionaires will be selected even before Trump is gone.

The real takeover is already completed. Your democratic institutions have been gutted and made into tools for the executive (outside of the central bank, but they are working hard on that), your supreme court infiltrated, your congress and senate utterly unable to reign in the executive. Your military has been "cleansed" of people who might resist. Your media is fighting for their lives against the FCC who is getting weaponized against them, or they have already surrendered or were belonging to the billionaires in the first place.

There is not much left of anything that made your country great, because all of these are signs of an autocracy, not a democracy. The US are going the same way as Russia did - a democracy on paper, while not representing that in any real way.

And because of all of this Europe will not forget this. Yes, we do not actually want to increase military spending, but it is happening in the largest scale Europe has ever done this outside of WW2 (Perun has a great video regarding this, where a) Europe is supporting Ukraine with more Money than the US now b) after a ramping up-time of a few years military spending is now bigger and growing faster than anything russia can accomplish even with a wartime economy.) Our "failure" as such is that the LNG deliveries from Russia will still go on until next year (13% of EU LNG still comes from Russia this year) and that there is no political will to put boots on the ground, which is hard to sell to the populace.

And i would not bet even a cent on that you are out of Trumps claws. He will for sure try to get a 3rd term, regardless of what your constitution says, and he has a supreme court that will ensure that, just as they ensured that he is pretty much untouchable. The decline will not be catastrophic for now, but the US's place in the world is not left empty, it is gone - no other country can take that risk anymore after the US threats against other sovereign states, the meddling in South America and the buddying-up to Putin.

Edit: Goddamn, even Canada prefers to deal with the EU rather than with their southern neighbour, and they will also not forget the threats against their sovereignity for a long, long time. The current rerouting of trade routes will not stop regardless of your midterms.

Voted my mail in ballot and already dropped it off. Dem all the way down. Fuck the republicans. And don't try telling me Dems are just as bad somehow or that this is just voting for the lesser evil. Fuck anyone if you think that. If you do, you're part of the reason we're in this shitshow right now.

Voting is for kicking the bad guy (it's always a guy eh) out.

You want change for the better? Get into politics.

Too late for that si now I hope all sane Americans vote blue.

Cheers from Europe

All while it's publicly known that the election is being actively rigged, and would change close to nothing even if it wasn't. So yeah. If you feel safe doing so, absolutely go vote. Bullshit. More of the “same sides” bullshit. If they don’t recognize how much better they have it with one of the parties, it’s all on short attention spans and trolls like this. Consider ACA as the big one. It was mainly pushed through by one party, and over ten million people got health insurance that didn’t have it before. That’s a big deal. it’s been mainly rejected by the other party until...

ACA was written by the insurance companies for the insurance companies. Idk maybe it was better than the status quo ante but it would have been a far right plan in any other developed country.

Far better. Something like 12 million people got health insurance who didn’t have it before (compared to the millions who lost health insurance now), there were standards to ensure plans actually covered common medical issues (also no longer true), and it was subsidized by income to be far more affordable than the true cost. Yes it also had clauses to better support medical providers (including rural hospitals that are now closing) while insurance remained profitable. It was far better than what we had and the hellhole we’re jumping back into.

The ACA is the worst example, as one has to be able to absorb price gouging in order to access our system in the first place. But sure. Keep gaslighting the poor. Worked great in 2024.

No. Troll

I think the message is for the people that can't even bring themselves to vote. Clearly if they aren't voting, they aren't going to do anything involving more effort. So the goal for them is to just get them to fill in some boxes and sign their name. If this election is truly rigged and we descend further into fascism, then maybe we can work on getting them to go a little further.

You might be surprised. I know a few activists who refuse to vote because the system is bad (they're not wrong in their analysis, but I think they come to a useless conclusion).

There's a lot of people that think that voting is enough. It's not, especially when you have a two party system where both parties are on the bad side of many issues.
