Crossposted from https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/49014737I am the owner of an HP ENVY Laptop 16-h1000 series laptop. There are three display options for this laptop: a non-touchscreen sRGB LCD, a touchscreen sRGB LCD, and a touchscreen OLED display with a better screen resolution and colour range than the last two (Display P3). All three displays are the exact same size. I unfortunately got the touchscreen LCD, which I realised 1.5 years after buying this laptop, so it’s too late to return the laptop now. Would it work if I ordered a replacement for the OLED screen and swapped out the LCD as an “upgrade”? |

I would find a tear down of the laptop (maybe ifixit has one?) and go from there. It should technically be possible, but you may need some specific tools or take certain precautions to ensure you can disassemble and reassemble everything and it work. Laptop screens are not typically easy to swap out |

Put your serial number into https://parts.hp.com/ and look up the available parts. Lenovo will give you exact matches for your machine, and matches for the machine type. If HP does the same for your machine just look for the OLED display assembly. If you want to save money get the part number for the OLED display and put it into ebay. You'll probably a whole display assembly and not just a panel. Touch screen displays tend to have different assemblies from non touch devices, ad OLEDs sometimes have different assemblies from their LCD counterparts. |

I wanted to do this to my Acer Chromebook Spin 14, because the display lacks stylus tilt feature. But I found a refurbished Chromebook Plus Spin 714 for $330 shipped and it's a decent upgrade, without the hassle. It was literally brand-new in the original box. I don't mess around with HP. I suspect the BIOS has the hardware locked down or firmware updates would fail or something. It sounds stupid, but HP is like that. Almost $400 for that OLED screen on ebay. |

This, I tried to upgrade a different laptop after the old LCD broke but the cable on the new LCD had 2 extra pins. Even so, I could get the post to display but nothing past that. Maybe I could have gotten it to work if I had more time but I needed the laptop for work. So I ended up just replacing the old LCD with the same SKU. |
