Unfortunately it's actually not even a replacement for either of those, only for Google/Apple pay realistically, since you'll need to use a smartphone like with those. Either an iPhone, or a google-approved Android phone. So no luck I'm afraid.
It depends. Italy has Bancomat cards, Denmark has Dankort, etc. I can totally see the system being integrated with cards that possibly don't have any MasterCard/Visa integration at all. |

Wero is part of the EPI (European Payments Initiative). It's going to be a network of all the digital payment apps, so you can use your own app all across Europe. The problem is that the Italian member is Bancomat, which literally nobody uses (Bancomat is a big company, but they issue debit cards; nobody uses their digital payments service). In Italy, the most used app is Satispay (which is ver...
Yes, the network will expand through integration but Wero itself will not be adapted by banks from other countries. I don't know why Wero is getting so much attention on lemmy. We can just as well talk about Polish Blik instead of Wero. |

and you would use a website with what? a laptop that doesnt fit in your pocket? no thx
Does your phone not have a webbrowser? The point is to not make it bound to a single piece of tech that's currently controlled by only two companies. I recently opened an account with Barclays and they are very much app first focused, but their app doesn't work on GrapheneOS. God know how long it would take them to create an app that supports more Linux native phones. |

it won't be able to challenge Visa and MasterCard if it isn't available internationally. European businesses also need ways for foreigners to pay for their services. |

Will this be in the form of usable swipe/contactless cards or via some app running on either Apple or Google OS? |

Availability depends on adoption. Europeans travel a lot, there's a strong incentive for it to be offered if the demand is there. |

True, itβll need to be something like alipay or wepay for the Chinese, Iβve seen enough places around Europe that offers them as valid payment methods |

All of that free "interest" money from the poor is finally being re-routed to another area of the globe. I wonder if the huge credit card predatory interest rates will be the same? If so, then it's just a bait and switch and nothing changes. |

In Massachusetts, we have the Charlie Card system which is the T. A. P. Pass and our system just got updates to read tap credit cards and tapping your phones. Given how unsecure the MBTA is, having this would be a shit show for those who don't get one issued specifically for themselves. The Charlie Cards can mainly be found every morning on top of the machines because they're free for most peop...
So I dabble in a bit in cybersecurity, compared to the transit card I have in Ireland, the security of Japans Pasmo system is decades ahead. Now despite the temptation, I haven't altered how much money I have on my Irish transport card. I mean I don't want legal trouble and get banned. Pasmo on the other hand looked like it was a centralized system; I didn't mess with that and only took a peak because I don't want to go to jail. |

Interesting. What about this then? My understanding is that other countries have implemented different solution long time ago (Bizum, Blik and so on) and will not implement Wero. They agreed to integrate with Wero, meaning that Wero users will be able to send money to Bizum/Blik/other users but banks from other countries will not introduce Wero. Where are you getting your info from that they wi...
That linkdash article is about how they intend to extend local payment methods and make them cross-border. From my understanding, this will exist alongside Wero, using its infrastructure, but it doesn't mean that it's not coming itself. Exact arrival times on Wero in other countries aren't known yet (I don't know them either) but it is in the pipeline. The idea is to start with a smaller core of countries first (born out of the very successful Dutch iDEAL), and from the lessons learned and how it catches on they will determine when it expands further. I have my info from confidential documents relating to my job that I can't share I'm afraid. |

MIT hackers did a review of the Charlie Card System and their vulnerabilities, that's how I know. I'm not a coder. Edit omg!!!!! : https://youtu.be/DDRiLe0TyyE. Polish a fuckin' turd I was hinting at how if Pasmo is used for more than just transit, if it was the Charlie card system it wouldn't be that great for people who don't have a card issued to them, which you can have a card issued to you with your face on it and you can register it online and everything. They also have disability / reduced senior 65+ tap cards that you can get issued to you where you only have to pay half fare. |

So the interesting thing about that is there's traveler cards and there's resident cards. Somehow I get resident cards. I guess I'm bad with menus or friends help me in whatever country I'm in. Both of my Japanese and Irish transit cards are heh have local rates. The traveler rates are insane compared to what I pay, that's a bit exaggerated but it does save some money. Kind like you mentioned senior rates, it would be double the standard rates of a local. I don't think I'm really taking too much advantage of it because I pay the local taxes instead of writing them off. But yeah Pasmo is interesting, it's like my Leap card but I can buy beer with it and of course it has a set limit and there's unique ID that's tied to your passport--hence why I mentioned I didn't want to FAFO. |

From what I read banks from other countries aren't interested in Wero and it's understandable. For example Spanish banks invested a lot of money into Bizum which they control. Why would they now implement Wero which does the same thing but is controlled by French and German banks? It makes no sense. That was the reason for the initial split between EPI and EuroPA and current agreements only confirm it. They will integrate with Wero but will not put it in their apps directly. |

Stating facts about something is not advocating for it. If I say "Poland used PLN, not Euro", am I advocating for PLN?
You wouldnt waste your energy writing about how one system is better than another. It's just a weird "I'm impartial" flex |

They're different products, Wero offers features Bizum does not. Ultimately Wero is a product banks can make more money off of so they're likely to invest eventually. But atm Wero is unproven in the actual market, so it remains to be seen how well it will catch on. That's why these banks don't want to make the switch immediately, and prefer this expansion route first. If the consumer demand is there, the banks will follow. |

Interesting. You're not only the type of a person that can always find some meaning in a comment that's simply not there, you can also tell what I would and would not spend energy on while knowing absolutely nothing about me. Impressive. |

I used it in Italy this year and in Denmark last year actually. To my understanding it goes through the Visa/Mastercard systems instead of BankAxept on terminals that doesnβt have it.
Ah, neat! Thanks. |

I haven't heard of anything like that being planned for wero. I suspect nobody wants it because then they can't force you to install their apps. The EPI is a bunch of banks after all. Private companies. |

He didn't say anything about hating smartphones, he just said smartphone exlusivity (ska an app with no other alternative) can fuck off. |

That won't fly. The EU is a massive market for Apple and Google they won't want to lose. But hey, I'd love those monopolies to burn too, so be great to see the problem of them highlighted like that. Digital sovereignty is suddenly a hot topic.
Apple and Google won't have much of a choice if the government demands it. Will the current government? Maybe, maybe not. Will the next? Who knows. |

This is why digital sovereignty is so import. We deal with the companies now or we may never be able to. |

Yeah, I was shocked to learn how dependant EU was on American technology. I think it boils down to national pride. Both Brazil and India took pride in making their own payments system. Eu was pretty chill until uncle Donny came. It's like, don't try to fix what's not broken, and Trump broke it. Though honestly, they should have started earlier, I think as early as Trump's first term.
Pride? No man, what Brazil and India have in common is being CHEAP. We frugal, homeboy. Got no money to be sending the USA. |
