Kiana Mai had made some haha-this-sucks posts about how some of her best work is forever locked behind an NDA.

Which is fucking bullshit.

I don't feel much need for a more detailed or formal argument, on that point. I don't need to fly a diagonal flag and declare workers must etc., in order to say, copyright doesn't mean keeping a fucking cartoon secret... forever.

I will say copyright only exists to provide the public with new works. Businesses are entitled to most of the money and some control. Not all. And if you don't want the money, we still get the result, assholes. The art belongs to us. Copyright is only an incentive for there to be more of it. It is our gift to you. It is not an exchange. Give us what is ours, and either take the money or don't.

We finally have the secret missing episode of Mike, Lou, and Og where Og looks into the camera, his eyes bleeding with photorealistic blood, and says "Hail Satan" backwards

This is probably a drop in the bucket though, right? A variety of things sure, sort of like a snapshot of an era.

At least compared to how many broadcast cartoons were made with Flash yet (as far as I am aware) have no .SWF releases. Even among web shows, it seems like there's more lacking than including it. I know that's different than .FLA (source) files, though you'd think that'd be more locked down.

Copyright exists to make art commercially profitable. It's not clear to me that it results in more art. But it does encourage high-budget art.

These files represent years of unpaid-for access to other people’s work, and artists have pushed back on past leaks for exactly that reason.

Not at all? All the artists are saying leaking Avatar early robbed it of a big exciting release, which apparently means a lot to them. If the production footage were released would they get royalties? From a web search it seems they dont even get it for the finished work. So the only party who is "unpaid-for" is Cartoon Network corporate. Weird pro-copyright lie from Mashable
