I have a collection of innertubes that can no longer be repaired because either the valve broke or the break was on the seam of the valve. The old tubes give a lifetime supply of rubber bands cut to your width of choice. The whole tube also functions as a big bungee cord. But I have to wonder: can they serve us better by preventing future punctures? Two things to consider:

An inner tube is about 4 Bucks. There are many better ways to save a buck. |

I used to keep 2 dead inner tubes lining my mountain bike tires. But now I have a road bike and there is barely enough room for the tube needed much less an extra. Years ago I switched from dead tubes to a tire liner. Again unsure if that would fit in my road bike tire.
