I love every single word in that sentence! And I hate that it's right.

It's a one question quiz, actually: Do you want to be a furry? Yes or no? If yes, congrats! You're now a furry. I'm actually an asexual furry. So no, you don't have to engage in any sex at all. I like the aesthetic and I've met a bunch of my friends through the fandom as a shared point of commonality. Probably the biggest question you'll get asked as a new furry is "what is your fursona?" If yo...

One thing that seemed to be contentious back in the day was whether us bronies were furries.

Woah, this maybe a good way of contributing what seems to be a skill I have. Not trying to brag but as a 33 year old skidmark on the national economy, I am currently batting 1000 on job interviews over my life. I have multiple times just quit a job on the spot and had a new one before weeks end. I'm not sure why, or how, but I have never been interviewed and not offered the job. Mind, none of t...

I'll pick up on one piece, humbling ourselves to take a job we see as below us is hard. I've done it before and it was a huge ego hit. A friend who's been unemployed for over a year is facing that now. It's not an easy path.

And some income is often better than none.

Yeah it's a big military/fbi town. The joke was the FBI removed the exemption of people who've had sex with animals. I never thought I would see that reading the news.

An early job of mine was in the FBI Academy cafeteria. Very familiar with the area. Forgot about the “loving animals” reference, so it took your explanation for me to catch the joke.

I interviewed for 3 weeks in Manhattan 1988, whoever would talk to me. Dressed well, suit, nice tie, matching black belt and shoes. Every single interviewer dumped on me: "no real experience, nobody cares about your degree or what grades you got, you've got nothing to offer." Finally, I bought a $2 bright red necktie from a street vendor, had my shoes shined and went and saw an agent who interv...

I have no real experience to back this up, but I feel like nowadays dressing up in a full suit and tie for a computer science job interview would be overdressing (if you are not going to work for a bank). I generally go with just suit pants and a button up shirt and that seems to have worked fine for me so far.

I feel like a lot of people involved in the hiring process are incompetent and shouldn't be there. Like you have HR people who can barely use Word asking if you know Java or JavaScript

Yup I had a HR personally message me saying the person I recommended doesn't have a certification needed for the job. They have that in a different state, getting it in the state the job is in is as simple as saying "hey I passed the same exams you guys take (it's national), I'm registered and practicing in that other state, can I get approved here?" And they say "sure". It's small documentation and a bit of waiting period, but that's shorter than the training period of the job itself. I said a bit about that but they're like they don't have it in this state. Which I'd understand if it's just a way to say no without saying that person is not qualified for other reasons. Because most other openings I see in our industry gives the candidates 6months to get the certificate because it's easy

I need to find a better phrase than "cargo cult" but I see a lot of that at work. People who don't understand why a system is the way it is become fanatical about doing it particular ways.

Like, you have to do "file -> save as" into the directory. If you save it somewhere else first and copy it that's NO GOOD

Yeah. I think sometimes it comes from using a lot of shitty softwares that only work with "happy path" so they like to repeat what works and won't experiment (because that means repeated work).

I have a lot of "we have to do it this way", me: "this is better", them: "we always do this way".

As well as, me:"hey it's easier this way, I think clients will like this way, even if we do the original they have to switch eventually", them: "no, they asked for this, we NEED to do this", me: "can we ask?", them: "...", i talked to the clients and they were already thinking about the new one and had no problem, saved us weeks of work trying to back port an already existing solution

At past employers it has seemed to me that most of what the internal recruiters do is look back and forth between resumes and job descriptions and throw away the resumes that don't have enough bullet points matching.

And now we have AI that can do it even worse and even faster!

Im sure there is a hidden cost that youre not seeing.

Depends how good you are at playing the part, without actually doing any of the bad stuff. Churches vary, but often, it's one of those places where the tribal symbols are more important than actual substance, so taking advantage is very possible.

See: Whatever super-rich televangelist. If you're doing something similar, because you're poor and can't afford childcare, there's an argument that's not even bad, then.

Edit: Although, if OP means Sunday school or youth group specifically, the kids are going to be exposed to some shit, which you'll have to manage. An adult telling you you're going to burn alive, and that's good, isn't really fun for an 8-year-old.

Job platforms so bad that D and E just got yeeted into the shadow realm i guess

job platforms are the grindr of job search… flaky, poorly built, disappointing experiences, and you feel dirty afterwards

(and this isn’t slut shaming; this is just… grindr is a trash fire)

Let me know how that goes. Is there an Intro to Furry Guide and a FAQ? Are there classes I can take to get Furry Certified? Do I need to engage in sexual activity which doesn’t align with my current non-furry orientation?

I'm guessing people would be weirded out if they knew you weren't actually furry-inclined, so it's probably more down to being a good actor, if you're just there to network. And then basic networking skills, after that.

How do you put an opiniom on a resume? Or are you talking cover letter which at least half of hiring managers don't even read?

my CV has objectives, code skills, and infra skills right at the top: 1 para each

work experience also has some relatively plain english: achievements and responsibilities as bullet point sentences

all of these contain opinions somewhere… usually in the form of “i thought and pushed for this, worked great”

objectives is almost entirely opinion: the way i think about systems and what i want to achieve in a professional context

I just had a flashback to one of my first office jobs.

They had weekly reporting that needed to be done, and someone non-technical had been assigned to do it. They had like gone into the database and copy-pasted records into excel, and the whole operation took a full day.

I was like, "Hold on. What? You know you can script all of this, right?"

Luckily my boss liked me, and let me go ahead. Changed the task into an hour, including making whatever charts and slide-deck management wanted that month.

Though I do wonder if sometimes doing things badly is a weird pro-labor move- They get paid the same if they take all day versus an hour, so why bother speeding it up?

there is this running gag that furries are mostly made up of computer geeks who are in rather advanced positions within different digital fields The joke I heard is that a plane going to a furry convention crashing would cripple the IT industry.

Yeah, that is probably the most famous joke. There were also a lot of jokes when the "live action" pinocchio movie came out that the reason the fox was the only well animated thing in that movie was because they got the furry artist to build and animate the model. I believe it. That fox was animated with passion, lol.

I guess I have never seen a paying job as "below me". Some jobs aren't worth the pay, but that's different imo. Cleaning up sewer overflow after a storm for $20/hr in 2010 wasn't enough, but $40 sure was.

It looks like your only exposure to the furry fandom is watching cringe compilations that zoom in only on the 0.1% worst members of the fandom and sensationalize and distort the facts even about them. You could use some changes to your media diet. Would you like help with that?

I've found that having an opinion helps in job applications, from personal experience. There's so much AI garbage being thrown around in terms of job applications, so if you can throw in an actual opinion about something, especially if it's tech related, then that might at least stand out.

laid off a few months ago and I've been searching for another senior software engineer role in the US for far too long and have gotten to the point where I'm unironically considering applying to places with a resume that is just a few bold sentences about my aptitude as an engineer.

Not because I think it'll work, but because you just start grasping at straws when a decade of development isn't enough to get past ATS and your resume looks like everyone else's.

What have I got to lose? I only even get denials 40% of the time anyways, the other 60% they don't bother responding at all.

I think that's honestly how it goes. If you're efficient and just get more tasks, or get called off for not working (if you're done with work and doing something else), then you have to pace yourself. Lot if work I get is copy paste this from here to here that takes hours, I could have written an script to do all that in the time I spent cooy pasting, but then I'd be the only one who could do it again. Even though the next time it'd take 5-10 minutes

Yeah, I'm not actually sure what OP meant, now. If your kid's in Sunday school, aren't you going to be spending time in the service, anyway? I guess if you just dropped them and ran, it'd be hard for them to say no.

Maybe you could get away with that when they're really little. Once they're school aged, leaving them unsupervised would be better than in the hands of whatever bunch of church ladies, and the Catholic church has a whole other layer of reputation.

From their perspective, we're the ones trying to hide our children from ideas that are correct and vital, so they can justify it to themselves. Trying to defend the standard, evangelical version of hell is harder, which is why it's good to bring up.

D: state-run job websites for the unemployed. You don't have to be unemployed to use them, nor a resident of that state. The listings are at least not scams, and you don't have to pay anything to apply, but success at getting hired is still low.
