A centrist is just someone that too cowardly to pick a side.

I don't think it's quite so black and white

it's not a US specific thing. It's a human being thing. People just want a reason to dismiss you and hate you, rather than talk to you. Political beliefs are just the latest thing people get upset about. decades ago it was race or religion. but folks are less racist and less religious, politics has replaced it as the go-to reason to dismiss people as awful and evil. and on lemmy, well, centrism...

Could not agree more

You either have empathy or you don't, it's a yes/no question. You're either an arrogant narcissist or you're not, it's a yes/no question.

Ah yes, it's completely black and white.
No nuances, thanks for reminding me

Do you have any particular views you're in the center on that you feel strongly about?

I am a immigrant.

I feel countries should have strong immigration laws, and that immigrants should integrate into the country they move to if they plan to stay (at least somewhat, not completely)

I've learnt the language and way of living of where I migrated too but most don't.

Basically I mostly agree with the Denmark model on immigration.

Many EU countries have handled migration badly, which just fuels the far-right, and then everyone suffers anyway.

I'm pro LGBTQ, pro-abortion, Socialist, pro-wealth distribution etc.

So I'm mostly left, but not on everything.

It's "centrist", but anyway. When they agree about as much with the local left as the local right. It's all relative, What the ends even stand for can be completely different, depending on where and when you are. (Examples are available, if that sounds hard to believe) Edit: And yet, people still downvote and walk away. That one always gets pushback, but I can defend it to the end of the Earth ...

Yea I'm a bit lysdexic sorry

Trigger Warning

Oh and most controversially on lemmy by far and will probably get me flamed or banned on here, I feel that the best place to draw the line in how to categorize sports is that there should be a XX chromosome category.

I am not married to this idea, and open to change my mind, I just haven't heard of a better place to draw the line.

You can't use Testosterone levels, because there are women who are naturally born much higher T levels than what some sports would allow, meaning they would be forced to take hormones because an arbitrary line has been drawn lower than their natural levels.

Yes I know this will upset people, but before critiquing me on this, please also include an answer to where you think the line should be drawn, and no "Let the sport decide" isn't a answer.

If your views perfectly align with all the other views of your political peers you're neither left nor right but an idiot.

Everyone else agrees with some views on the left and some on the right but doesn't fully align with either side. I'd say this is the majority of people but even then they tend to lean towards either side. A truly centrist person I doubt exists. I'm not sure what that would even look like.

A lot of the centerists you call far right are also getting called far left by the right. Centrists tend to pick and choose left or right or neither on each issue individually and don't pick sides. Believe it or not, there are right beliefs that are not far right Nazi beliefs, the mundane day to day stuff. Genuine belief in lower government control and lower taxes for example. Unfortunately we ...

Most people want the same things - they just disagree how to get there.

90% of lemmy leftist don't believe in free will. the concept of individual making choices is facism, or so I have repeatedly been lectured on here.

I don't believe in free will either but it has nothing to do with fascism nor do I identify as leftist.

Centrism describes the views you have, not the methods you have used to obtain those views, so this is incorrect on a base level. Someone who thinks through their views from first principles and lands on having views between the current left and right (somehow, seems hard to do but it's possible) is a centrist. Someone who wings their views and pays no attention to politics at all but happens t...

Yes I know what you said. I'm doing this thing called disagreeing where I think something different than what you do.

I think this is probably unanswerable because it's subjective. No one can agree on where the center actually is.

Election trolls love to espouse the view that the Democrats, the left most of the two major American political parties, is actually a right wing party. I'm sure the usual idiots will be along in a moment to proselytize.

Obviously however, if there are two points on a horizontal spectrum, one will be on the left and the other on the right.

Which makes it important to think and speak about goals, not measures. If — for example — people screaming for deportation of (to them) undesirables would instead think about what they hope to achieve with it, at least some of them would end up with problems close to them they need solved for a personal better life and those could typically be solved by other, less hateful, means.

You’re asking lemmy about centrists….. that’s like asking MAGA about liberals. (Or asking lemmy about liberals)

You're better off asking somewhere where actual centrists congregate, rather than Lemmy where there essentially only different flavours of left-wing. But critical to any understanding of this topic is that the terms are all relative. There's no "true" centre just like there's no "true" left or right - these terms only make sense in relation to each other and to established norms. A centrist is ...

This is the correct answer.

A true centrist is someone who considers both left and right positions carefully, then sides with the right. Centrism is rarely a coherent ideology and to most people it's seen as the "default" or "starting" position of politics. In reality, issue by issue, there is rarely a coherent 'in between' position. Centrists tend to be politically naive, and navigate the world by intuition (they call it...

You just described the entirety of .ml and that pseudo-progressive movement on lemmy pretty succinctly.

The only thing I’d add is how it’s all a made up front to look like they are active and committed to a belief, but when it comes time to do anything meaningful at all, they cannot be bothered.

Their entire ideology can be summarized as: just a bunch of words on the internet.

In my case it's more about the views on the far left that are not worth considering.

and what happens when my axioms are in conflict with yours?

or my axiom is self interest above all else, such that hypocrisy is useful tool to manipulate others?

call me names all you want if it makes you feel better, is that one of your axioms? mock anyone who asks you a question that challenges your assumption?

Right, anyone who isn't you is trash. Sounds like a convenient axiom.
