That's a good piece of tech, should be mandatory for trucks registered to work in the city. Another safety tip for cyclists, cars and motorbikes: don't try to pass a right turning truck even if it looks like the driver is providing a gap to their right. They need that because the back wheels will take a shorter way around the curb, you don't want to be in the way there, which is an easy way for incidents like this to happen. Stay well back when approaching, or pass on the left. |

This is the standard in countries with road safety laws. The first and only truck from an EU country I could find from a 1 minute long image search that lacked those guards was this one:

Interesting and informative video, thanks for sharing! I'd never see these before at all, they seem like a no brainer |

Enough said. Adopt it. Why do we do this to ourselves? |

In the European Union, side guards had been required on all trucks since 1989. Enough said. Adopt it. Why do we do this to ourselves?
As with everything in America

And also in Canada. This surfaces once in a while, usually when a cyclist is killed, and it always ends up with "it would be ideal but nobody wants to pay for this". Apparently we can't burden the truck owners with the cost of installing them, and no level of government wants to help. |

I don't remember to ever seen this. The European trucks seem to be smaller, and maybe the space is used more efficiently... ? EDIT: i saw the images posted in the comments... yeah i've seen them, but they do not look like a fence, just something occupying the space, i always assumed it was something that was necessary for the normal operation of the truck. EDIT 2: The next time i left home, i saw one... I guess i never paid attention. So forget my comment |
