But James McAvoy is already older than Patrick Stewart was when he began acting as Jean Luc in TNG. |

It's very unclear when, exactly, this pitch was made. But heck, Jean-Luc Picard was 59 to Stewart's 47, so I'm not sure it matters. |

A prequel! What a novel idea. This should be an org chart at the Star Trek office today when they look at show ideas: is it another prequel? Yes - don't pursue this idea. No - Allamarain! Move along home. Granted, they got lucky (initially) with SNW. But that needed a backdoor pilot through Disco to get launched. |

If we've learned anything from the Hollywood elite; it's indeed that age isn't a problem. |

Disco was mostly terrible (Hemmer was one of the best characters of all time tho) but Disco gave us SNW, which gave us hope. SNW shit the beds a bit less, but it still stinks on the Enterprise. I love Muppets & even a musical episode could've been fine if the show wasn't limited to 10 episodes a season.... It might be a while before we get another real Trek, the merger isn't going to help. We just need a real showrunner who doesn't go to sleep in guilded Star Wars jammies. |

Yeah, I have been looking at the veritable content drought we'll be entering since there is nothing in production any more. And in streaming TV stuff takes ages to get off the ground or even renewed. I read on the grapevine that letting all existing contracts expire is a way to kick Kurtzman out and after that there is a chance for a fresh start under new leadership. But that will take time until after Academy S2 goes online. So considering all this stuff going on behind the scenes, I'm okay with Muppets and Casablanca in space. Whatever! Better than nothing. |

Please... Lets just have some new characters and new ideas. The problem is the people making Star Trek for the last 30 years have no fucking clue what makes Star Trek good. Bringing back a beloved character is not going to fix the fundamental problem with modern Star Trek. |

I'm not saying I don't want more Star Trek, but I have no issues with watching all of the older series (yes, even Enterprise) over and over, until something that deserves the title comes along and actually understands what the show was really about. The actors are pretty damned good, but I'd rather them use the budget from the fancy sfx and make more episodes based on deeper stories. Hollow, is the word. |

You seem to be taking the fact that they rejected a pitch for a show that you think is a bad idea as evidence that they don't know what they're doing, which is...truly dizzying. Edit: Holy autocorrect. |

I was applying my opinion to the proposed idea and comparing it to other recent attempts. I am not sure what else you expect from comments on this article. |

I started a rewatch of DS9 a couple of months ago and I'm a third done with S7. I saw Oceans 11 on DS9 earlier today. Didn't even skip all the bad Ferengi episodes in the rewatch. I suppose it was hard for the makers of Disco to square the circle of telling Star Trek stories in a post breaking bad streaming era. In TNG S1 they use the phaser as a visual effect maybe a dozen times, most of those in Conspiracy, because it cost too much. Now they can do whatever for a dime so they overlooked that we liked the character stuff they wrote to fill the hour so they wouldn't blow most of the budget on SFX. I hope that in a future fourth wave Trek they fill the hollowness we feel. |

I compared the idea to other recent attempts in a negative light... come on.... Is it really so important to you that everyone likes this idea just because you do? You can like it and I cannot. It's fine. Everything is fine. |

I don't recall saying I liked the idea. That has no bearing on my interest in discerning what the hell you were talking about. That interest has reached its limit, though. |

The scifi police/hospital procedural needs a high-school drama tie in. |

Exactly. Give the next group the same equipment they had when filming "The Original Series", only allowing studio effects with a rare exception for graphical effects on removing wires and whatnot. Hire Trekkies to make it. Watch what happens. Trekkies know love. Enough of this walking on the hulls of really fast space ships with blurry stars streaking by, Magnetic boots are for punching Borg, in the rarest of extremes. Leave the action sequences to whatever is left of "Star Wars" and stick with what you do best. |

But it's true. Fan service can bring you only so far. Lower Decks has tons of fan service but it's almost never the main purpose of the story. |

I don't think I can agree with that - plenty of Lower Decks episodes seemed reverse-engineered around whatever legacy actors they were able to book, and other legacy actors were just sort of...stuffed in there. I would agree that they always crafted meaningful stories around that stuff, but that stuff is still pretty foundational - moreso than perhaps any show besides the third season of Picard, which I would enthusiastically hold up as an example of "fan service" (I don't love the term, but whatever, it fits) done very poorly. |
