They're not the only ones. Reddit stole the r/NoKings subreddit and has locked it out. They claim it's up for adoption as of 5-months-ago but will of course never cede it to the organizers of No King's. ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN etc., have barely mentioned it, and it doesn't remotely come up in Google News save for a sparse few pages of local news stories. The only good news from representing my area ...

Yanis Varoufakis is right, we are heading into technofeudalism.

Meta platforms has 4 billion active users worldwide. That is an insane amount of power in the hands of one person.

4 billion accounts. The active ones aren't 100% of those accounts. And of that %, many are bots. A real statistic would be Meta's end.

No surprises as to why. Indivisible should immediately file the equivalent of an amicus brief to Brazilian courts because they are having these so-called "glitches" with Lula's campaign as well.

Brazil should ban everything Meta.

It blows me away when I meet leftist activists who refuse to stop using corporate social media. The common refrain is "its where everyone is" or "no one uses [insert any decentralized and federated service]".

You cannot liberate yourself, or the rest of society, when you actively use the tools of your oppressors.

if that's your only interest in life you do not need a partner

Well aren't you just a quite sad person. No one should ever be lonely in life. There are plenty of people who would be quite happy with being able to share that interest, regardless of how difficult it might be to find someone with similar interests.

I was also being vague on purpose, for instance, while my interests are simply being cozy at home, it includes doing many many things at home, but that don't require me to go out. Online dating doesn't solve this either. It's very rare to meet someone in close proximity to you as well, so if that's a route you want, you might want to be comfortable moving.

This is pretty awesome. It will force people to use platforms that are ACTUALLY secure, like Signal.

Meta, in conjunction with the US government, is going to make it harder to surveil protesters. How elegant!

Well, you don’t always get to choose, for me it’s among other things, my municipality and sports club posting updates and info exclusively on meta platforms. I complained, believe me, but it dalls on deaf ears.

As Geddy once put it.

Even if you choose not to decide. You still have made a choice.

Though believe me when I say I understand you. But we always have a choice. Even if you have to stick with toxic shit like that in the short-term. And if you're not super techy. Or have the most free time available to focus on something like that yourself. We all can do more than just shout and tell people to move. I say this to myself as well.

When it comes to activities and movements like this. Ones that don't favor the oligarchs. Centralized platforms are a liability. But they are also unfortunately the best developed. Telling people to move to alternatives. A lot of times means leaving behind Comforts or things they have come to rely on. Which just adds more friction to the friction that already exists over switching. Maybe the community doesn't exist. Maybe it exists but no one post it. Maybe there's no one moderating it.

I'm looking at trying to post more frequently to local communities that are neglected on the feddi. Possibly even taking over administration of them. Point is we can always choose. And there's always a little more we can do regardless of our level of skill. Basically, I guess it's a situation of we need to be the change we want to see.

You will be locked out of your local community without Facebook. I’ve been off it for over a decade but needed to get rid of a couch without paying $150 to do it and Facebook was 10 minutes and it’s gone. But a couch is one thing. Anything local requires Facebook.

No fucking excuses. If you have an account you are in full spirit of what they do.

This is why protest has to be disruptive. A bunch of people holding funny signs in a park on a Saturday afternoon doesn't have an impact.

I hate to say it, but yeah. Look @ France. They fuck shit up whenever the government tries to fuck with them, and have a higher standard of living as a result.

after years of saying this, i gave up. people have integrated facebook into their lives to the degree that saying "delete facebook" is pretty much the same as saying "cut your own balls off." they won't do it, no matter if they even acknowledge facebook sucks and is a waste of time. that's rare, though. usually it's "i can't leave facebook, i would lose contact with everyone!" same shit with tw...

The reality is you only lose contact with people who don't matter enough anymore. When I left around 15 years ago I reached out to those I wanted to keep in touch with and made sure I had their number. Anyone else if they looked hard enough could find me elsewhere if they wanted, or already had means to contact me directly. Most did not.

But guess what? My relationships with people are deeper. It's been wildly positive for me. The only issue I had at the time was missing out on events from acquaintances, but that's not an issue anymore with alternative apps

Look, I agree for the most part. Fuck FB and X and all the rest to hell. But organizers know that you need the most people you can get to have a chance of making a difference. That means you use every tool available for outreach. I've seen protests organized entirely on non-corporate platforms and they are... Small. You don't see those in the news and people driving by generally ignore them. If you can get the hype going through tiktok or facebook or whatever and get hundreds of people on board you can bring attention and make a difference. Now something I've seen done is using them to pull more people and then moving those people to decentralized options.

Then funnel them onto the fediverse from corporate social media, as you mentioned. The house is on fire, get them out of it.

Educate people (campaigns), organize tech workshops showing people how to use the other tools, set up local servers that can be used for organizing existing groups. Frame corporate social media as part of the data center problem... There's so many ways to approach it but as long as you keep using those tools, you will never carry through with getting people onto the fediverse. You can never just move them to decentralized spaces if not enough people use it, so use it (I know you are already though as we're here :)

Change is hard. But global climate collapse and WW3 are far worse options.

It's the same way everyone talks about how dating apps suck and it's ruined dating, etc. But what is the real alternative?

I married a very nice girl last month. We met at work 5 years ago.

We need to figure out how to rebuild social relations without the Internet. Otherwise the billionaire class will control access to the opposite gender. For the sake of humanity, go be nice to a stranger.

There were protests all over my city yesterday and I can find barely any coverage. I even looked at Reddit, which was flooded with No Kings pictures back in March, and there was barely anything for the events yesterday. Definitely sus as hell.

This is the first I'm hearing about it. There was a NoKings protest yesterday?

Meh. “That’s where everyone is” it’s more like that’s where all the bots and algorithmic gatekeeping are. I get way more engagement on mastodon than I ever did on twitter post-2012 algorithm shakeup. Before the algorithmic censorship, I got lots of engagement on twitter. But that twitter hasn’t existed for a long time. When I got on mastodon it was like oh. The algorithm is the entire problem. ...

Yeah, it depends on the engagement you are after. Companies are after where all the people are. Not sure if they even care if it's being propped up by bots and trolls.

Also, companies mostly all just do what other companies do - another network effect. If going on Bluesky or something like Mastodon is not something all the other companies are doing, they won't.

I tried to get about 2 dozen people to leave a Slack channel and move over to a Matrix room.

Wanna guess how many takers I got? And these are all technically proficient people.

Zero.

You probably shouldn't assume that monetized leftism is something that's authentic. Leftism is just a brand that's fairly profitable.

Hasan Piker is a creation of Jeff Bezos, and now he's a boogeyman being used to scare people into voting for the party that cuts his taxes.

Thinking wealthy social media influencers are going to bring about some glorious revolution is the flaw here. Wondering why wealthy "leftist" influencers stick with corporate social media is missing the whole point of the scam.

Sure it does. People build networks at these events. One of the tactics of fascism is to make dissenters feel they are alone and maybe crazy for feeling the way they do. These events tell people that they are not alone, and it is actually the authoritarians that are crazy, not them.

For a non-violent resistance campaign to succeed, you need to build up the numbers and reach a threshold of people working together to impede the actions of the authoritarians. You don't accomplish this by engaging in violent actions, that just scares people away and gives justification for the authoritarians to do violent reprisals. Violent acts actually help the authoritarians gain more power, non-violent resistance drains their power.

Their economy is on the verge of collapse because of this. They borrowed a lot of money to create that high standard of living and "fuck shit up" means someone has to pay to fix things later which also cost money.

I mean, better Facebook marketplace than buying new. Marketplace has basically entirely replaced Craigslist for buying used stuff, it's really the only game in town. If they only use it for the marketplace, things could be worse.

Yes, lets just leave all plattforms where we can get a bit of public reach and remove our ability to respond to people talking about us.

Online propaganda gets more necessary every day and leaving mainstream platforms just destroys any capability for it. Use smaller less controlled platforms for people already on your side but the only way to reach the average people will be on stuff like Instagram as long as it stays popular.
