I tried CachyOS, but here's why Bazzite is still my go-to Linux gaming distro

I would bet real money the way you broke Debian testing is that your boot filled up and initramfs didn't generate correctly, and then your rebooted and it wouldn't boot. Am I correct?

Nope, it borked some dependencies for my DE and uninstalled most/all of it during an update run. To be fair, that was on me. Should have paid more attention when the list of packages was suspiciously long behind “Remove”, but package lists were usually quite long with testing.

Could have salvaged it, but I thought “Well, Debian just broke on you, can not be much worse on Arch” and TBH, never looked back.

It may not have been a browser, my apologies if I got that incorrect, though you guys absolutely have changed the default programs. My brain initially wanted to say it was Terminal/one of those applications, though I couldn't remember. I will correct that. Regardless, an update shouldn't be changing anything like that on my system. It broke my trust.

It was the default terminal, yes. I also got pissed by the change, as not only does Konsole look worse than whatever it was, i had to rebind things like the terminal shortcut.

Thank you!! Yes that was definitely it, and it broke my shortcuts too which was the only reason I know.

Kinda feel bad getting it wrong, but man, fuck that guy who tried saying it's "not even possible" when clearly something similar happened lol. Thank you again

i wouldn't consider cachy as arch made easy at all. it's a distro i can't recommend over bazzite for newbies because you need to somewhat know what you are doing. not throwing shade it's excellent, just not for newbies at all.

When i was running bazzite, I was running more apps through arch distroboxes than flatpaks, and many things i wanted to install were just straight up impossible immutably, so i switched to cachyOS and turns out, you want something, it's on the repo or AUR and just works.

I've been running Cachy on my laptop for a year and a half, and my desktop for 10 months. It has by far been the smoothest linux experience I've had.

I used bazzite for about 6 months on my laptop, and its great but I ran into too many headaches with the immutable aspect trying to use it for everything besides gaming.
I used LMDE after bazzite for almost a year, and it too had frustrations.

Man, there are a lot of idiots that have clearly never used any Arch based distros for any appreciable amount of time just constantly sharing the same slop talking points.

This whole (prompted) "article" is just a rehashing of every idiot's idea of what an immutable distro means ("it can't break". Bullshit) and what a rolling release distro means ("It's unstable, it always breaks!". Bullshit).

Bazzite was such a pain to use, I get the concept and it sounds nice, but in practice just a super simple thing like needing say the gdu tool in my CLI was a hassle, plus it had warnings that I shouldn't install things or I might break the supposedly stable immutable system (???)

be careful with the AUR though. it's all unverified code that frequently has virus outbreaks.

Yeah gaming on it has been flawless but just about everything else has been a pain in the ass. Accessing my shares on my media server breaks frequently, or errors out if I don't open the files stored there just the right way, can't get the shares on my desktop added to fsearch to be able to search them all at once, can't get the profile from my Firefox on my desktop to stick through restarting the app when I restore it. And those are just off the top of my head.

brew install gdu

Some rare stuff is on brew but you also need to know that it's there somehow, it's a pain to deal with. Especially since Bazzite doesn't tell me where the safe version of the package exists, just warns me "don't do it that way!"
