A colleague signs his emails with his name followed by an ellipse, with no sign off pleasantry. It always seems like he’s sulking. Monument…

That's psychopath behavior

Is that why there seems to be hardly any punctuation left? I see this over and over again in the posted screenshots and comments here, and it drives me absolutely crazy.
Punctuation serves a purpose, but most importantly, it makes the crap you ejaculate into the ether easier to read.
This text was written by an autistic old man.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic?

I'll give you a hint: it was painfully hard for me to resist capitalizing the "I".

I wanted to write it in a way that actually would be misunderstood due to lack of punctuation, but it was too much of a cognitive load. In my native language it's really easy: for example, the difference between "No, I'll do it" and "I won't do it" is just a comma. But in English it's not that easy.

This is why we millennials add lol to everything I swear it. I’ve also evolved and started adding :). I hate sending work emails because I can’t do either thing, so I’m just the bottom frame gal in my mind.

I used to have a friend that would never use capital letters and full stops. Except when they did, then it was scary.

Millennial here. I used to think of emojis as unprofessional, but then my current workplace started including them (and cringey slang) in important messages.

So, I readjusted my expectations. Limited emoji use = professional.

Then last year, I used the angry face 😠 along with a message. That seemed to concern people?

So now I'm wondering if "happy" emojis are allowed professionally, but negative ones aren't (just as negative emotion must be hidden in all other aspects of society, I guess?)

I don't know. There are no written rules. I'd rather we all go back to just using proper grammar and full sentences like we used to for work communications. I'm both too autistic and too old for this trendy shit.

It's still a thing. The new rule is: never end a paragraph with a full stop, otherwise it's perceived as overly formal or cold. You can still use them within paragraphs, it's only the very end of a paragraph you omit it At least, that's the rule my autistic ass has reverse-engineered. Also, lol cannot have any punctuation immediately after it like "lol.", otherwise it comes across as flat and h...

Interesting, I haven't come across the paragraph part before. I think the period at end of message went away mostly because it is redundant. Once you hit enter, the message is finished and this is very easy to see in the user interfaces of today. So you save some keystrokes which can be nice especially when you're sending multiple messages in quick succession.

I suppose a similar argument could be made for paragraphs: the end of the paragraph is already clear from the vertical spacing, a final period doesn't add anything functionally.

Written language is evolving, the period being the pointed end to a sentence may lead to a new punctuation mark as the period only becomes “ok” as a separator. Or maybe we go full comma, that would be weird, I think, yeah,

This is possible but doesn't take into account that the likely reason the period went out of fashion as a sentence terminator is that the need for having a terminator in the first place has diminished.

Let's say someone asks "did you check the thing?"

In Hebrew, you can reply: "לא, אבדוק" meaning "no, I'll check".

But if you drop the comma, it comes out as "לא אבדוק" meaning "I won't check".

The negation of the verb is done by adding לא ("no", or "not") before the verb.

The need has absolutely not diminished, in fact in written language it’s more important than ever.

Sure, in between sentences. But there's no need for a period at the end of a message. Just look at the comments. There's many without a period at the end, and some with. I thought it was kinda silly at first to prescribe meaning to it as well, however it works well as an indicator of tone, and punctuation at the end of a message doesn't really have any other purpose now that messages are contained within their own bubble

That's correct, you are only allowed to use cutesy or positive emojis. Which is why I strive to only use the most obscure

It's somehow funny that you decided to end this sentence with a dot which otherwise would've ended with three dots :D

It really depends on your who your workers are, but I absolutely don't use emojies in work emails. I do use them in teams messages though.

Emails are for conversations I want documented. Chat messages are the equivalent of a desk conversation.

Also, yeah, angry emojies are still taboo at any type of work chat for me. Can't be seen as angry at the office.

My therapist likes to end texts with ellipsis... Apparently my partner's mom does this too, so maybe it's a boomer/old person thing...

It's old-fashioned informal writing. Until about 20 years ago, the vast majority of writing was formal writing. Formal writing follows formal speech patterns, with proper sentences and commas and full stops. This is what you'd learn at school. When we talk informally, everyday, we don't actually talk like that. We talk more in fragments. An ellipsis is sort of the old person's way of separating these fragments. Younger people tend to press enter and send another message to separate the fragments. Maybe the oldies get annoyed at young people sending multiple messages when it could have been one.

I've never seen a tilde used that way before, but if I ever saw that, I would think they have worms or something. Or it's a Gen-Z version of the ellipses... Like that which I've heard youngsters mock Gen-X for using ellipses...
